Writing biographies is a staple of English and history classes. This site takes students through the process in a way that will make reading them more palatable. It will also help students delve deeper into a person's life , making it memorable for them. Divided into four groups (Questioning, Learning, Synthesis, and Storytelling), it helps students understand how to take facts and apply them to a real live person. It wraps up with the six effective traits of writing, reminding students that biography writing shouldn't just be a recitation of facts. The "learning" section does link students to Yahoo encyclopedias and Google (with search hints included), so be aware of that feature. This site serves as a guide for writing a biography of anyone (including students themselves).
In the Classroom
All material at this site is copyrighted, so it must be viewed online. For students who do best with step-by-step instructions, this site is a gem! You might have one group research authors from a particular country while others do artists, musicians, scientists, etc. A class report from each of these groups would do a good job of encapsulating a country or area of the world within any given time period. In the Classroom
If you and your students are studying the medieval and/or Renaissance period of time this is a nice addition to engage student interest. Think about having individuals, pairs, or small groups of students choose a recipe to create at home. Then ask them to photograph the steps in making the dish and the final product. Enhance learning by having students use the Free Online Photo Editor, reviewed here, to label and put borders around the photos. If 19th century British authors are part of your curriculum spend some moments browsing through this site that sheds light on the lives and work of the authors of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre . Walk the streets of the Town of Haworth in Yorkshire and experience the village as it was known by the Bronte sisters. Visit the chronology section to discover connections between events in the personal lives of the sisters and the economic, political, and social conditions of the world in which they lived. A family tree, comprehensive biographical information, summaries and analyses of the novels, and links to related resources are provided.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a introductory activity before reading one of the many books by one of the Bronte sisters. The family history will provide some background on the two authors, that would be great contextual information for students before beginning a class reading of one of their novels. Have cooperative learning groups explore the information, with the intentions of summarizing the main points in a multimedia presentation. This WebQuest, based on The Brooklyn Nine: A Novel in Nine Innings, begins in a similar fashion as opening a box of 1845 to 2002 baseball memorabilia. Every chapter, or "inning," is a snapshot of American history as seen through one of our national pastimes-baseball. Although the book is fictional, many of the people, places, and events are based on facts. There are stories to read and research to explore about the history behind the people, places, and events. Each task leads up to collecting "souvenirs" along the way that students use to design their own digital box of memorabilia. Students finish by writing the stories that go along with their collection. What a great motivational hook for teaching information literacy, with all the steps built right in, including easy-to-follow directions and descriptions of the task, the process, the web based research, and creative extension activities. There is even a rubric to use for holistic evaluation.
In the Classroom
September and October are perfect months for baseball fever, with the World Series right around the corner, so why not get on base with The Brooklyn Nine: A Novel in Nine Innings and make a double play by introducing your class to the historical fiction genre. Divide your students into teams of two or three players to complete this WebQuest over the course of several days, using a class set of computers for a "home game" or take them to the computer lab for an "away game." There are many projects to choose from; assign all of them, select just a few, or have different teams be responsible for various activities. One of the tasks involves students creating an information web, using Inspiration software. If your school does not have a license for that software or it is not already downloaded on your school's computers, you can use free web-based alternatives, such as bubble.us reviewed here or one of the many tools available from Teachersfirst toolbox. View archives going back to 2007 to find book reviews, author's chats, and some videos that accompany books featured on the site. A flagship feature of the site is the 28 Days Later portion. Each day during Black History Month features a different author. It is a month-long showcase of the best in Picture Books, Middle Grade, and Young Adult novels written and illustrated by African Americans to help parents, teachers, librarians and booksellers recommend good reads. This webquest is simple, well-designed and ready to go! Some of the activities include drawing pictures to represent the size of each type of honeybee, counting the sides of each cell of the hive, writing about the duties of the honeybees and more. All thinking skill levels are included from basic knowledge questions to evaluation activities.
In the Classroom
In lower grades, this activity would be great as a guided activity in the computer lab or on laptops in your classroom. If you only have a computer or two, you could do some of the activities as centers. The teacher could direct the students throughout some of the activities and allow them to complete the writing, math problems and drawing activities on their own. A detailed grading rubric is included.Teachers can also take the activity a step further, and have students create podcasts explaining how and why honeybees are so important. Use a tool like PodOmatic (reviewed here), to help students along.

The Children's University of Manchester contains excellent mini-lessons and interactive lessons for students on a variety of science, history, literacy, and art topics. Key stage 2 is roughly equivalent to grades 3-6. Topics include The Body and Medicines, Energy and the Environment, Ancient Egypt, The Earth and Beyond, Teeth and Eating, Microorganisms, the Brain and Senses, Talking Textiles, and Words. Choose a topic to learn more about (explained by a professor at the university). Then explore by choosing from activities on the sidebar. Activities include short videos, matching activities, slide shows, and more. Since this site was created in the UK, you may notice some slight spelling and/or pronunciation differences than in American English.
In the Classroom
The interactive lessons on this site are perfect for your whole class using an interactive whiteboard or projector. During the interactive lesson, students can operate the board/mouse to interact with the material. Most lessons will have enough opportunities to involve the whole class. The site is also ideal for individual instruction in the computer lab setting. This is an amazing site for kids who ask, "But what did they WEAR?" In today's fashion-conscious society, looking at the past is often quite amusing, eye-opening, and insightful. A worthwhile site for teachers of theater, history, English, and even family and consumer science -- since the site even includes some patterns. Clicking on any of the options in the opening menu will take you to specific areas of that subject through history. The "Costume History sorted by Period" is truly fascinating as it offers drawings, patterns, and rationale for clothing of different time periods, including materials used and practical reasons for everything from codpieces to headdresses.
In the Classroom
This is a HUGE site worth dipping into for everything from history of clothing to wedding rituals and ceremonies of all kinds. As you introduce the setting of a new piece of literature or study of a new historical period, share this site to make another time "real" to your fashion-conscious teens. Include this site for fashion, costuming, or customs as one of the student research topics for a time period or lit study.Note: The site is not terribly attractive as a set of links. It also has advertising and links to "outside" topics. Give precise directions for where students should go.

It is set up for 3 groups of students to complete research and activities and then share that knowledge with the rest of the class. The areas covered are The Puritans, The Salem Witch Trials, The Protestant Reformation, Religion, Arthur Miller, and McCarthyism.
In the Classroom
One of the nice things about this website is that it gives a simple (Wikipedia) resource through the more complex. You can structure the groups in ways that determine how deeply you want your students to involve themselves. If politics is more of a focus, then the group dealing with McCarthyism can do addition research beyond the links posted here. Begin by choosing from topics such as Reading, Math, Classroom Management, or Seasonal. Within each topic find a list of lessons or activities. Look under Classroom Management to find a link to Common Core "I Can" printables, reading logs, and checklists for grades K-5. Choose from different subjects for each checklist along with the option of borderless design or clip art poster. Don't let the juvenile look of this site or the abundance of advertising fool you. There are a lot of wonderful resources to be found with just a little bit of searching!

Differentiating activities for all learners has become easier with this tool. Use this free Bloom's Taxonomy tool, created by an educator, to develop great objectives for differentiated instruction. Move through developing your goal on this site by choosing a level of Bloom's Taxonomy and a thinking skill. Then move on to your content, resources, finished product expected, and what kind of grouping you want. These are all tabs at the top of the page. Watch the sentence at the top of the screen change as you create your objective.
In the Classroom
As an example, use a verb from Bloom' taxonomy such as "evaluate." Click on the part of the sentence at the top, in parenthesis, to enter your content such as "patterns of environmental issues." Choose the resource you want students to use, the product you want them to make, and the number of students in a group by clicking on the tabs. Example objective: Students will evaluate the patterns of environmental issues using websites to create a news report in groups of two. Save your objective by copying and pasting it into any document or online tool. The Differentiator will give you many project ideas that you may not have thought of yourself, and serves as a welcome reminder of different activities and expectations you can use in your classroom. Take a look at this site at the beginning of the school year or when creating a new unit (or project). Find new ways to differentiate for your gifted students using this creative and powerful tool. If your gifted students test out of your current math lessons, use this site to find new material to challenge their minds. Find interesting graphs and statistics that are published daily on this site by The Economist. Check back daily for new charts to use as openers for discussion and writings in your classroom. This site does include some minor advertisements.
In the Classroom
Use the chart as a basis for writing prompts, fishbowl discussions, blog posts, and more. Create a wiki page about the background information of the chart.
