The Library of Congress created this extensive site, which uses archival images and texts to provide background and context for a multi-part study unit on To Kill A Mockingbird. The entire project takes four to five weeks, but the unit can be subdivided into smaller components. If this book is in your syllabus, this site is well worth a visit.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plan to include with your book study of To Kill a Mockingbird both as a whole class unit, or modify for use with independent reading groups. Use the leveled reading passages within Reading is Fundamental for multiple grade levels and books. Find additional support materials for each book, including author interviews, lesson plans, crosswords, and word searches all as downloadable PDFs. Though Beeline Reader is not usually a free tool, Literacy Central is providing it to its members for free through these PDFs. You do not need to create a free membership to use these materials, only to save them as a favorite. Do you believe that kids can change the world? What are you doing about that? If you have been thinking about involving your class in some type of community service and project based learning, but need some direction, DoSomething.org is a phenomenal place to "shop" around for ideas. Perhaps you may want to start by showing the film, Pay It Forward, or with a writing prompt, "If you were given time in school to come up with one idea that could be put into action right now by people your age that would make this school or this community a better place, what would it be and how would you put your plan into action?" Have students share ideas in small groups, then introduce them to DoSomething.org by projecting it on your classroom whiteboard or projector, viewing some of the short videos, and using the power of the internet to empower them to act now. Challenge students to collect Internet resources for their cause using Wakelet, reviewed here, where they can add a cover image, background, collaborate with others, and chose the layout they prefer. Next, enhance learning by asking your students to create an interactive infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, to explain their ideas about their cause and how they would put their plan into action. Club advisers, school counselors, and teachers of gifted can use the empowering resources of this site to inspire students to ACT.

Take a journey through the life of Frank Sadoras. This site has a wonderful collection of photographs and biographical documents that chronicles Frank's life growing up on a farm in Illinois from 1898-1912. By using this site, you and your students will get a view of what life was like growing up on a farm as well as the photographic techniques Frank used to take his photos.
In the Classroom
This site is a good site to use if you want to introduce more primary sources into your teaching. There is an extensive activities and resource section that covers the topics of photography, history, farming and genealogy. In addition, the PDF entitled the Turning Point would be a good resource to use in a lesson on narrative writing. Share the photos in art (or photography) class on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have students create blog entries from the perspective of Frank Sadorus. Use the pictures for creative writing exercises. Why not have a photo of the week and have students write a short piece on the class wiki about what they feel the picture represents, what is happening in the photo, what the animal or person was doing/thinking in the photo, or whatever else is applicable in your class. This is a another wonderful site for the NEH that encompasses both history and literature in a study of the Salem witchcraft trials with Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. It has a complete lesson plan for 10-12 days with included activities and final projects as well as lesson extensions, all in a printable format. This one is a real bonus for either English or history teachers!
In the Classroom
While this site includes lesson plans for 10-12 days, it is easy to dip in and out of the activities, molding them to whatever it is you want to teach and the approach you want to take. As an addendum to the Academic Vocabulary site, this site is invaluable for testing students interactively with the word lists created. As a general vocabulary checker, it is a great pre-testing tool as well. Check out the link The Exercises to find the free word lists.
In the Classroom
The interactive nature of this site makes it good way to involved students in their own learning. While it offers a purchase of the software used to create the list, you can use the exercises offered on the website for free. This is possible only if you use the list of words available on the site as sublists. Having students check their own work (the sentences offered are upper level, 8-12) frees you to work with individual students and allows all students to work at their own pace. You could also use selected lists (with credit, of course) as the basis for a student-generated class vocabulary wiki. Monster stories are popular with teenagers, and Shelley's Frankenstein is not what they expect it to be. However, this website provides motivation for students to delve into and discuss the meaning of true "monsters."
In the Classroom
This site includes standards, procedures, and extensions for studying Frankenstein as well as an intersting way to approach a trial for student discussion. Certainly worth a look for anyone who teaches this novel. If you teach Chaucer or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Everyman or Thomas Malory, this site is a great resource. The sources that high school students need to research and build background on Middle English are here in full text -- with pictures and some music, just for fun. While each link does have sidebars for everything from lessons plans to ringtones to vacations, these are easily ignored for the treasure trove included in each section about the author or the topic.

This is a great source for students research or teachers idea-gathering. The material is quite scholarly, and the links will take you to interesting places. This site is constantly being updated, so be sure to check before you go. It's great that actual artwork and lettering appears for most of the sites, so students get an idea of what the literature actually looked like. Though this website is archived the links still work. This website provides background information about Charles Dickens and the writing of Great Expectations. The website features very brief overviews of the chapters, a timeline, definitions of various literary elements, information about Victorian times, and more. There is also a section on characters, theme, and sample essay questions. The information on the Victorian times is very useful for students unfamiliar with Dickens and the writing style of the 19th century. Please note that the word REVISE in Great Britain means the same as REVIEW in the U.S.
In the Classroom
Why not use an interactive whiteboard (or projection screen) to review for a test. Project the sample essay question on the screen and have students write independently at their seats. Then compare the students' writing to the model (answer) provided. This up-to-date general biography site is maintained by the town of Uxbridge, Ontario. Montgomery lived near here during her adult life after leaving Prince Edward Island, and this site has good information on where she lived when she wrote her famous books--as well as a chronological listing of the books. This neat Montgomery site gives insight into who the author was and how biographical her works were. There is a link to the Uxbridge Historical Centre.
In the Classroom
This site is better for teachers than students to use as a resource. There is a link to Sullivan Movies, the creators of the famous Canadian "Anne of Green Gables" series, at which you can buy resources from DVD's to books, posters, etc. if you can't resist shopping. Find links to four online texts of the Anne books as part of the Gutenburg collection.Use passages from these online texts for interactive whiteboard activities from parts of speech to analyzing writing style, then introduce the author once the students are "hooked" by the passages!

Though Windows to the Universe is basically a science site, it has many links that will connect science with language arts, history, and math. Find an abundance of information and activities for your classroom. There are numerous science categories, and within each category you can choose "Beginner," "Intermediate," or "Advanced." You can also see the site in Spanish. This site has excellent visuals and numerous topics, and several educational interactives (under "Games"). Don't miss it! The audio has been updated to MP3, however, the Interactives and Videos require Flash or QuickTime, regardless, there is so much more to do and learn at this site that it is worth a visit.
In the Classroom
You will want to preview the categories and levels your students are to explore. Investigate categories with your students, using your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have small groups of students choose a subcategory to further explore. One of the most valuable (though visually plain) sections of the Internet Public Library, this site offers students reliable sources for literary criticism on the authors most studied in high school. For most students, writing their first research paper is a daunting task and a great temptation to plagiarize from a vast Internet. Walking your students through the maze of biographical and literary criticism explained on this site can show them how to incorporate their own thoughts about a work with support from the academic world. They can search via the author's last name, by the title of the work, or by period in literary history. Students can also access the Online Literary Criticism Guide for assistance within the site or the Literary Criticism Pathfinder, a nice guide to directing students how to find resources within their own libraries.

You might choose an author and, using an interactive whiteboard or projector, have students find sources for that author and discuss their own ideas of his work in contrast to what others have said. Teachers can use this site very effectively for helping students with speech basics.
