Although vague, there are some great classroom ideas on incorporating this site and its' basic concepts into a literature classroom. This would be a great resource for a literature teacher working on expanding upon the variety of authors read in their classroom.

There's more to this site than first meets the eye. In addition to a chronology of American writers and literature from 1620 to 1920, the author includes a synchronous chronology of historical events, which provides context for the literature listings. In addition, the author has created biographies and references for many of the authors listed, as well as links to other sites which cover related issues and events. Plan to spend some time with this one.

In the Classroom

Use the author biographies as the basis for student research reports on specific authors. One creative assignment is to have students research a specific author and "create" a facebook page for them using a tool such as Fakebook, reviewed here. Students could include information about the author within their profile, and even relate the author to their peers by listing a few of their "friends." A great way to get students interested in the authors, and relate it to something they're very familiar with.

This very useful site provides information on Romantic-period literature and culture. Its resources continue to expand. An interesting feature is the Villa Diodati, a five -room MOOspace. Named for the house rented by Lord Byron and the Shelleys in the summer of 1816, the space provides for panel discussions and conversations. The Romantic Circles site already provides conferences, publications, scholarly resources, reviews and electronic editions, with more features on the way.

Though it is no longer actively maintained, this site includes some entertaining ways to hook students on Shakespeare, such as Today in Shakespeare History, a daily calendar with a page of quotes from Shakespeare for every day of the year. On March 15, read the famous lines from Julius Caesar! Use the magnetic poetry page to find new ways to put Elizabethan English words into original poems on your computer screen.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it as a learning center or station - in particular, the Poetry Machine during a unit on writing poetry. A very creative and fun way to help students get their creative juices flowing. A great resource for a Language Arts and Literature classroom.
