Refresh your classroom activities using Google Drawings. Learn to design interactive images, labeling activities, and timelines that engage students and deepen content-area knowledge. These resources can bring additional context to your instruction and be used across content areas and grade levels. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Learn how to create three types of instructional activities using Google Drawings; 2. Identify ways in which Google Drawings can be used to support instruction; and 3. Create an instructional activity that can be used in class. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Teaching Children Philosophy offers a large list of favorite children's books to use when discussing philosophical ideas with students. Choose from the alphabetical book list or select from topics including ethics, the mind, and more. Each book's suggestions include a summary of the plot, discussion guidelines, and philosophical discussion questions.
In the Classroom
Although created using children's books, this site is perfect for introducing philosophical discussions to students of any age. Choose two books that represent different sides of an issue to share with your class. Create a mind map including different ideas represented within topics using a tool such as Mindmeister, reviewed here. Then have students create an annotated image demonstrating their viewpoint including text boxes and related links using a tool such as Google Drawings, reviewed here. Generate any image you can describe with text using the online image generator from Canva, reviewed here. Canva employs three tools (apps) to generate images - Magic Media, Dall-E by Open AI, and Imagen by Google Cloud. Begin by selecting the link to generate images, then select the tool of your choice. Magic Media is built into Canva's design tools and is accessible when creating a design. Dall-E generates realistic images and art; Imagen turns text into photorealistic images. Use Dall-E or Imagen in an existing design or create a new one. After selecting an app, add a text description of the image to generate, including as much detail as possible. Continue revising your text until you are satisfied with the image, then add filters, effects, or other elements available from Canva's library to complete your image. Follow the directions to add your image to your Canva library, include it in a presentation, or share it directly with any supported platforms.
In the Classroom
Use Canva's image generator for any number of classroom uses to encourage creativity and bring any idea to life instantly! Teach students to use descriptive language in writing to bring characters and settings to life. Generate images of historical characters to help students visualize historical events or places. In science class, ask students to generate images of systems or molecules to represent abstract concepts. Include AI-created images when using webpage makers such as Carrd, reviewed here, newsletters, or videos created with online applications such as Clipchamp, reviewed here. Each journey includes a short description of the content and links to several activities featuring games, research projects, or discussion questions. Begin by creating a free account using your email address or Google account. Next, paste your notes or a website URL into the provided link; language options include English, Spanish, and Italian. Click the arrow to generate a quiz created from the information given. When complete, Yippity provides a list of flashcards with questions and answers; select test mode to view questions without the responses. If desired, edit questions and answers to suit your needs. Share quizzes using the URL found in the share link. Free accounts offer members the option to create three quizzes monthly.

Use Yippity to quickly create and share quizzes or provide materials for review based on text or websites. Because Yippity identifies important information, it is a helpful tool for students to use as a study aid; add a link to Yippity on your class website, and encourage students to use Yippity as a study tool for upcoming quizzes and tests. Follow the links to download the software onto your computer to use with a variety of recording needs. Create audio using your files or create new files using your microphone or uploaded files. This is the perfect place to create your mixtapes!
In the Classroom
Use Audacity in a variety of ways in your classroom. Let students become familiar with creating audio files by practicing voice recordings and experimenting with Audacity's editing tools. As students become familiar with this tool, use its many features to create background audio for podcasts, to create podcasts, or to record audio instructions for lessons. Ask students to use Audacity to record interviews of parents or other family members. Create a personalized dashboard that pulls together feeds and tools into one place -- for any topic. Optional registration allows access to updated information at anytime. This tool has power as s simple resource collector "on the fly" or as a customizable way to monitor many tools from one place. Creation of multiple dashboards requires an email address and password or Facebook sign-in. Use it the simple way by typing in any topic into the search bar; wait a few seconds while information is compiled then explore the results. Results are posted in widgets that can be moved around to personalize the dashboard as needed. A wizard will walk you through it if you wish. Tabs are also included that separate news items, videos, conversations, and more. View pages in reader format or with widgets by choosing from options at the top of the page. You can copy the url of a basic topic dashboard to access over and over. Signing in on a free account allows you to customize and save your dashboards and harness the real power to pull everything into one place.
In the Classroom
Demonstrate the power and uses of this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) with students to use as a resource for gathering research information. For example, create a dashboard on an environmental ("oil spill") or political topic. Gather current events from multiple sources into one place. Set up a dashboard on earthquakes or weather during science units so students can connect real world information with curriculum. Use this site for group projects, have team members work together to gather information, then share using a tool such as Crocodoc reviewed here. As a professional tool, create a dashboard for monitoring feeds from student activity on multiple web-based tools at a time (wikis, blogs, etc.). Through this guide, middle school students will learn about the U.S. court system and the anatomy of a criminal trial. They will also learn about the rights of the accused, the jury system, and career opportunities. The materials support the book by providing more accurate and state-specific information on the legal process. There are plenty of interactive activities suggested so students are not just passive readers.

Use this unit as a whole, or pick and choose the activities you think your students will be most interested in. Collaborate with your social studies teacher to teach about the judicial system as you read this book. Or those who have read this book may want to read another book in the series but can still follow the activities from this guide.

The Guide to Writing is a free online course presented through nine modules. A sample of the modules includes grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation, but there are many others. Each section comprises from seven to approximately forty topics. Each section explains the content; many have practice activities and short videos.
In the Classroom
Although this is a complete course, it isn't necessary to follow the order shared on the site. Instead, pick and choose individual modules or topics to use as desired. For example, if your class needs a short reteaching activity using parenthesis, choose that lesson for students to view and complete the practice activity. This site is also an excellent resource to share with students on your website or include with your other shared sites for students to use in school or at home. Use a curation tool such as Netboard, reviewed here, to gather and share web resources for students to find easily. Use the lessons as a model, and ask students to create writing lessons of their own to address common writing errors found in your classroom. Discover the many ready-to-go free lessons and videos to accompany your lessons on bullying and other current events topics. If you can't access YouTube or if a video is unavailable, the many questions and activities are still worthwhile. While discussing an issue as a class consider giving all students a chance to voice their opinions (even the shyest and quiet ones) by using a backchannel tool like GoSoapBox, reviewed here. Be sure to share the many ideas with your school's guidance counselor. Bookmark and save this site as a professional development resource both personally and when learning with peers. The learning modules are beneficial even after receiving other learning opportunities to refresh and understand content in a new way. In the Classroom
Use Deep Nostalgia Photos to upload and animate images of historical figures to use with multimedia projects. Include animated images in student-created projects created with Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here. Share images as a schema activator when introducing a new unit; for example, find a free Creative Commons image for Harriet Tubman and use it to create an animated image when introducing a unit on the Underground Railroad. You can also choose the highlight color, background color, font size and "word management." Word management allows you the choice of words being forward and backward, diagonal, up and down, and more. Options allow for the puzzle to be played online or printed out.
In the Classroom
Use this resource to help students review spelling words or other content related vocabulary. Change the font to a larger size and print it out for young children or students that have vision issues. Have students create word searches for other students to take. Zight (formerly known as CloudApp) is a screen recording tool with features for collaboration and integration with other cloud-based tools. After downloading Zight, follow the directions to install and use it on your device. Use the included tools to trim and cut videos or create GIFs. When finished, save and generate a link to your clipboard. Other features include the ability to do real-time annotations while you are recording your screen and editing tools to trim and cut recordings. Zight integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, and others. Free accounts offer one user up to twenty-five items with ninety-second recording times.
In the Classroom
Download and use Zight in many ways in all classrooms. Make screen recordings to share how-to information on navigating websites. Use the annotation tools to highlight important information and the location of website tools. Have students use Zight to share their screens when facing difficulty using sites. Create collections of videos for students to access, including instructions for logging in to various websites, searching effectively, or sharing information digitally.
