While this exercise is from a site on science and optics, the KWL strategy - a structured form of questioning and answering - is applicable to the study of many topics other than science. Teachers will like this one because it outlines multiple strategies for both inquiry and presentation, giving examples from science, literature, and art.

In the Classroom

If you're not familiar KWL, this is a great starting point.

Want suggestions for what every literate student (or adult) should read? Here are some suggestions from TeachersFirst's editors.

In the Classroom

Share this list with students as a challenge, and make the link available on your class web page. Consider conducting a year-long independent reading challenge, asking students to read from this list and create their choice of media "advertisement" or critique of the book using one of the many tool options in the TeachersFirst Edge. Ask students to generate a personal goal "Lifetime Reading" or "Book Bucket List" and share it in their own creative way.

You'll find lots of information on Medieval Food, Menus, Banquets, and Feasts. But you can also learn about Medieval Manners, Recipes, Gambling, Music, a blog, and more! This site is a must-see if you study medieval history and want a high-interest theme-based unit.

In the Classroom

If you teach World History, this is the perfect site to get some extra ideas to make your unit more interesting for your students. In the blog, you will find information about Eleanor of Aquitaine, Castles Gardens, Saint George the Dragon Slayer, and others. If you have weak readers in the class, you may want to use Read Ahead, reviewed here to create a guided reading activity for the blog articles. Enhance learning by having small groups of students choose a topic from the blog for further investigaion and then report about it to the other groups using Genially, reviewed here where students can choose their type of multimedia presentation. Have you heard about the novel A Proud Taste for Scarlett and Miniver, the life story of Eleanor of Aquitaine (who married two kings and gave birth to two kings) by E.L. Konisburg? It is a perfect fit to add historical fiction to your history classroom.

This is a web exhibit from the library at the University of California at Berkley. It presents a chronology of Mark Twain's travels along with excerpts and reproductions of his writings and letters during his travels. The material could be integrated into a Twain unit, or it could serve as a resource for students researching specific authors.

Although vague, there are some great classroom ideas on incorporating this site and its' basic concepts into a literature classroom. This would be a great resource for a literature teacher working on expanding upon the variety of authors read in their classroom.

There's more to this site than first meets the eye. In addition to a chronology of American writers and literature from 1620 to 1920, the author includes a synchronous chronology of historical events, which provides context for the literature listings. In addition, the author has created biographies and references for many of the authors listed, as well as links to other sites which cover related issues and events. Plan to spend some time with this one.

In the Classroom

Use the author biographies as the basis for student research reports on specific authors. One creative assignment is to have students research a specific author and "create" a facebook page for them using a tool such as Fakebook, reviewed here. Students could include information about the author within their profile, and even relate the author to their peers by listing a few of their "friends." A great way to get students interested in the authors, and relate it to something they're very familiar with.

This nationally published news source makes for an excellent resource for a teacher or student looking for current events. There's information ranging from politics, global news, business, technology - even pop culture. This would be useful in any classroom where a knowledge of the now was focused on.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for current events projects - assign students various weeks through out the semester in which they are to be the class news reporter, keeping their peers up to date and informed. Have students research whats going on via this news site, and present a small presentation at the beginning of class every day during their week. Students can either orally present, or for the technologically inclined, create a short video summarizing the same information. Have students create news briefs and share them using a tool such as SchoolTube reviewed here.

This site is the definitive list source for yearly Newbery Medal winners in the field of children's literature. Besides the list of the yearly winners and the accompanying honor books, the site provides access to previous winners dating back to the 1920's. Information about the Newbery award is in the left sidebar along with links to other important children's book medals, including the Caldecott (for illustration and other art).

In the Classroom

Use this list to help your students choose some new literature to read. Provide this link on your class website for students and parents to use to find quality literature. Consider starting your own class wiki with student-made interactive book posters on favorite Newbery winners and honor books using a tool like Canva, reviewd here.
