This site walks the student through an online tutorial for planning and presentation of public speaking. It could be used with an entire class to teach this process (all students working on computers) or as an outline for a unit taught with a computer projection system or using traditional paper methods. It could also be recommended as supplement to classroom public speaking curriculum.

This site was designed specifically for distance learning and writing instruction, but it contains anything an English teacher, or student of English could want. English as a second language resources, lesson plans, and helpful suggestions. Resources, lesson plans, and materials for writers and teachers. Also provides links to other sites for more information. Features online writing lab with one on one tutorials, and a grammar hotline, and hand-outs on. This site also has resources for teaching writing across curriculum for integrated teaching styles. This site is reviewed by Purdue English Department students and updated regularly.

In the Classroom

Use the handouts under the ESL heading as study guides for students trying to remember English conjugations. Have students practice the words with paper or online flashcards. If using an online tool, try Flashcard Stash, reviewed here. Making the cards and repetition will reenforce the message, and help students in a hands-off instructional manner.

This site is a collection of over 20,000 stories written by children all over the planet! This site also offers a pen-pal connection for children around the world that are interested in writing. Stories are not accepted for publication over the summer. An award winning site for young writers. An excellent site!

In the Classroom

This site would be an excellent motivating tool for students participating in writing and literature. Save the site as a learning center or station, and allow students both to peruse the stories and submit their own stories to be published. Stories are separated by genre, making it easier to tailor student's focus during a particular unit. During a poetry unit, instruct students to examine only the poetry and to submit their own. Very useful site to inspire and motivate students through the use of their peer's work!

This venerable site from the University of Ottawa won't win any design awards, but it's a very thorough treatment of grammar, parts of speech, sentence structure, and related grammatical issues. Designed primarily for one-on-one use, there are lots of very usable features, making it a good place for students to look when they're "stuck" on a grammatical issue.

Here's an on-line, full text collection of poetry from dozens of authors. Search by author or title and retrieve the entire text, ready to use. Very handy for language arts students who cannot find a particular poem in the anthology they're using.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for students during a unit on poetry. This could be a great tool for students searching for a poem to fit their needs, whether it be for a recitation activity, report, or analysis. Using a broader search engine allows them more options than would a printed anthology within the classroom.

Remember War of the Worlds? Did you know that the Mercury Radio Theatre also produced dramatizations of stories like Julius Caesar, Tale of Two Cities, and many other classics. This site has them in audio files that you can either download or play as streaming audio. A wonderful source of period interpretations, you can use this site in literature study or to learn more about the history of radio in America.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the beginnings of the radio, or the evolution of entertainment in Western Society. Allow students to listen to some of the broadcasts, making sure to include headphones in the center. Most entertaining would be the historic "War of the Worlds," broadcast, which could be easily compared the recent Hollywood movie. Start a class discussion on the differences between radio and movies, focusing on the difference between seeing and hearing the action. This site would definitely add some interest to radio, a topic that may seem boring from the outset.

Here's a collection of explanations for many of the phases that have come into common English use. The explanations range from authoritative to folklore, but the process itself is a great illustration of how colloquialisms develop.

In the Classroom

Use this site as learning center or station during a unit on pre-Elizabethan England. Students will love the odd facts concerning where common sayings originated, and the information garnered from the site could easily be worked into class discussion. Have an "Old England" day where students have to use these sayings and words in place of current vernacular!

Begun in 1971, this "historic" site furnishes e- texts of significance and merit. The evolution and history of the Official and Original Project Web site provided makes interesting reading. The Gutenberg Project attempts to make important texts accessible to as many readers as possible.

Use this site to search for readings and resources your school may not be able to purchase for all students. The site would also be a helpful resource to students on the off chance they forgot the books at school or for some reason lost access.
