There's an emphasis on political, economic, cultural, and military issues and their relationships with one another. Try this one as a starting point for an in-depth current events discussion.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a resource for a class discussion on the effects of the Iraq war on both US soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. This allows students to prepare for a class discussion adequately. The forerunner of many modern Muslim Countries, the lessons on this site provide wonderful background for world cultures courses. There are video clips from the original video production available as real time files, as well as interactive lesson plans.

Teachers and parents may find this an attractive service opportunity for students eager to "do something" about the plight of civilians in Afghanistan and the middle east. The backpacks cost $10 each.

For students interested in how they can help the economic and educational problems in Afghanistan, recommend this site as a means for them to get involved. If students are working on a debate pro-ing and con-ing the need to continue fighting in Iraq, this would be a really great resource for the con side. Here's a really first-rate treatment of the Middle East, its three primary religious subtexts, and the relationship of these to issues like global economics, literature, and history. Users will find a wealth of time-lines, as well as a series of "connecting questions" about issues like the role of women, nation-states, and the impact of stereotypes on international perceptions about this region. Lots of "extended thinking" opportunities here. The video trailers on this site require QuickTime, however all the other available information make this site worth a visit.

Providing a complete background on the troubles in the mideast region is a challenge even for these experts. This site offers lots of background information, chronologies, and biographical data to help students understand this complex issue.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plan on this site guiding teachers on successful ways to use this site in their classroom. This site can also be used as a learning center or station during a unit on one or more of the conflicts in the Middle East. Save this site as a favorite on classroom computers to allow for easy student access and retrieval. Have students research further on the site one of the specific conflicts with the intentions of presenting their results to the class. Have students use a tool such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location (on a map) where the story takes place. Students can retell the events of the conflict in a way that visually corresponds with their descriptions. A lesson that uses the original partition of Israel in 1947 to examine the cultural conflicts in the middle east. Students use a series of role plays to understand the issues and emotions that abound in the region. This lesson plan was one of the winners in a lesson plan contest sponsored by TeachersFirst. TeachersFirst editors have added technology options where appropriate.
In the Classroom
The lesson plan includes student handouts and technology options for students to share their projects in several ways. Teachers can easily differentiate the challenge level of projects by specifying which tools to use. Include this lesson as part of your activities to teach empathy for others.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Complete with maps, damage assessment charts, and commentary by former commanders, the site chronicles the war's effect on the middle east while discussing the problems inherent in managing a limited conflict. Good starting point for a discussion of the interplay between military, political, and diplomatic interests in American foreign policy.

Use this site as an extended learning center during a lesson(s) on the Gulf War. Because there is a lot of information on this site, we recommend creating a follow-along or guide to highlight for students what is the most important.
