The Los Angeles Unified School District offers a large selection of resources for teaching history and social sciences aligned to Common Core Standards. Choose from elementary, middle, or high school to find curriculum maps and lessons. One very useful portion of the site includes lessons created in partnership with Reading Like a Historian, reviewed here, that engage students in the creation of historical knowledge. Both sites are a must-visit for anyone teaching Social Studies!

This is a site created in partnership with Google as a project to help generations share and talk more through social networking. The concept is that young people ask older people to share their photos; these photos are then uploaded through Google maps to show the world as it once was. The older pictures can be compared to today's images through Google street view. In addition to uploading photos, stories can also be shared about the time period and the pictures.
In the Classroom
Use as an enhancement to research projects of family, historic events, and world cultures by finding and uploading pictures to the map. Use Historypin as a resource to compare and contrast different time periods in the same geographic area. Demonstrate on the interactive whiteboard or projector how different places have changed over time. Have individual students or cooperative learning groups create podcasts using PodOmatic (reviewed here) to go along with the maps. HistoryWorld is an ambitious attempt to pack a whole lot of history in a relatively small space. The site includes "histories," a series of condensed versions of historical topics across a very wide range of subjects. These histories might be helpful as a summary or preview of a wider unit lesson plan, but experts on these topics will probably find them too cursory. A second feature is the collection of timelines related to historical topics. While they are not terribly exciting visually, each entry on the timeline contains a series of clickable links taking the user to a Google search of the entry, a Google images search, and/or the section of HistoryWorld's condensed narrative. You can also generate a fairly random history "quiz" of 10 questions to test their knowledge.
Take caution when using the Google images search feature: the images that can be generated may not all be appropriate for classroom use.

HistoryWorld is likely to be most useful as one of a set of resources to be included on your classroom favorites, for example, rather than for in-class use. Like Wikipedia and other broad encyclopedic references, it simply isn't deep enough to really provide more than a summary. At the time of this review, one of the interactive games was not working. There are also links to more information (several of which are out of date). However, the links that are active, offer lots of detailed information. Be aware: this site does include unobtrusive advertisements.

The lesson can be done in an all-ENL/ESL class or in a regular class as part of an investigation of cultures, part of a unit on research, or as an art lesson. It can also be adapted for use in a high school level world cultures class.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of this free lesson plan during the end of the years content, using it as a means to review World History before the State standard exam. Students can each be assigned or select a country and complete the report, to be presented to their peers. This will allow the students to review and re-enforce the content. In the Classroom
Use this timeline as a guide to classroom presentations during a unit on the second World War. Introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector before allowing students to look at it individually with the intentions of selecting one major event to present to the class. Allow sufficient class time for students to research and prepare presentations, to be presented adjacent to the timeline in chronological order. For more tailored results, highlight specific events that students can choose among rather than the broad spectrum on the timeline. This would be a great way to teach the events of WWII in a non-lecture format, most likely at the high school level. For projects, have students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report. At this site, you will find an explanation about Dia de los Muertos - a time of honoring friends and family who have passed and when the holiday occurs. In addition, there are some examples of how it is celebrated and various ideas and examples of activities to help introduce your students to Dia de los Muertos; these include poetry, kite making, classroom displays, a booklist, altars (Ofrenda), banners, a two-minute video clip, and several others. Many of the activities have downloads, but they are not free. This review is for the free parts of this site. Reminder: due to the sensitive nature of this topic, it is best to inform parents and guardians that you will be teaching about this holiday. The video clip resides on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube it may not be viewable in your classroom.

Whether you go all out with a Dia de los Muertos celebration in your class or only do a lesson, this holiday will help to introduce your students to various cultures. This site has so many ideas for your classroom that you may want to refer to it year after year; be sure to bookmark it. Also, if you have students who celebrate this festival, you may want to ask them and their parents to help you with classroom activities. Since this festival occurs at the same time as Halloween, do a little study about the history of Halloween and have older students compare the two celebrations using an Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here.

This comprehensive history/culture resource is the mother of all timelines with over 3000 years of history available in "synchronoptic" form, that is, in parallel timelines. Users can view by searching year, event, people, stories, subjects, events, political movements, and maps. Constant updates to the events section and additional "people" lines ensure the timeliness of this amazing site. (The site does NOT include people who are still alive). The span of the timelines and people, events, and cultures is extensive. Timeline elements are clickable for more information. We recommend the site for grades 6 and up purely because of the level of exposure necessary to appreciate all the information and because of the reading level.

Use this site for context regarding what was going on all over the world at any given time, especially as you launch class discussion of a new topic or time period. Help students see relationships between what they know and what else was occurring at the same time. Use it to pose questions about how events and people may be related, as well. At the time of this review, there were seven diverse topics: Engine Simulator, Day Night Simulator, Dress the Knight, Nocturnal Animals, The Human Body, Braille Builder, and Captain Scott and His Crew (South Pole exploration). Each item delivers animated simulations of content. Some interactives offer options such as including labels or text highlighters. Others, such as the Human Body simulation, allow choices from several different topics within the simulator such as different body systems or organs for viewing.
