It's true! I saw it on the Internet! Sadly, too many students fall into this trap. All About Explorers was developed by a team of teachers to help late elementary school and middle school students sort the garbage from the gold on the Internet. Despite the name of the site, it's not really about explorers at all. In fact, all the biographies of the (very real) explorers on this site are fictional. Teachers can use the site in two ways: The "Treasure Hunt" section allows students to compare the biography on the All About Explorers site with a linked biography on a "real" site and asks them to compare the two and draw conclusions. Alternatively, there is a more comprehensive Web Quest section that allows for a more complete and lengthy lesson with the same object.
In the Classroom
The trick in using All About Explorers is to keep the real lesson a secret at the beginning and allow students to come to their own conclusion. Processing that "aha!" moment when students recognize that there is a hidden agenda here will have a much more lasting impression than simply telling students they cannot believe everything they read. Deep inside, students often believe they can easily tell the difference between the Truth and something that is misleading or downright false. All About Explorers will help them see how difficult that can be. They might also learn something about explorers in the process! Extend this lesson by having student groups find another suspect site and create a screencast of that "suspicious" site, pointing out characteristics that indicate an unreliable source. A tool such as ScreenPal, reviewed here, or Screencastify (Chrome app), reviewed here, will allow them to create a "tour" of the fallacies they find.You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

The EU has created a web page that provides summary information in a format with which most students can cope. This site is still somewhat Eurocentric, but it outlines the basic principles behind European cooperation and economic interdependence. As such, it could be a valuable starting point for students interested in exploring the future of Europe.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an introductory point for a unit on economic unions such as the EU. Have students explore the site in pairs or cooperative learning groups in order to understand more about the principles and advantages of membership. This activity works well with a graphic organizer to guide students OR as a means for students to explore on their own with the intentions of presenting what they deem to be the most important points to the class. Discover American History lessons correlated to Common Core reading and social studies literacy standards, especially those that require close reading and evidence. The goal of these lessons is to use primary resources, background information, and the analytical strategies suggested to meet the Common Core standards. In addition to these outstanding American History lessons, also find free online seminars and secondary sources. The secondary sources, under TeacherServe, include essays on topics in American literature and history.
In the Classroom
Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to help your class learn the background information and read the material through once. Work through the lesson together; then consider assigning groups of four students to go through the readings again, discovering the answers to the essential questions. Have students post the group's answers on a back channel chat program such as YoTeach!, reviewed here, so all groups can see all answers. The Wisconsin Historical Society offers this collection of first-hand accounts of historical events, from the early explorers through the settling of the United States. After a quirky search process, the site ultimately displays scanned images of venerable publications containing the material. While this approach is certainly historically accurate, it may be limiting for use with secondary students.

Share this timeline on your interactive whiteboard as an introduction to your unit on immigration. You could show the history of immigration and discuss the U.S. as a nation of immigrants. Use a tool such as Thinkalong, reviewed here, for students to debate about this topic, or any hot topic. It is interesting to note that there are many more events for the most recent twenty-five years than there are for all the previous years. Use this as a starting point for students to research and find additional information to add. Have students transform their learning and create their own timelines (with music, photos, videos, and more) using Timeline JS, reviewed here.Comments

The challenge activities promote higher level thinking and are ideal for independent practice and review.

There is a lot of content on the site, so it would be beneficial to create a graphic organizer for students to help organize their notes. (If looking for an easy find, we recommend using Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).) The site has numerous topics and layers, with most content delivered through stories. There are also instructional games and quizzes. Five stars for this one! The games require SHOCKWAVE. Explore the site in many different ways including the index, timeline, maps, and media library. Each portion of the site includes a robust search feature including filters for narrowing down information to desired dates, media formats, and more.
In the Classroom
Use the Ancient History Encyclopedia as an activator before teaching any unit on ancient times to share the stories of any period instead of just learning dates. Share the period in time with your students and allow them to explore the site to find items of interest to share with others. Replace paper and pen by using an online bulletin board site like Pinside, reviewed here, and have students share their findings. As you can see from the previous description, there is a lot to learn at this site. The interactive still require flash, however there is so much more to read and images to vies. .

This site would make a nice accompaniment for students reading "The Diary of Ann Frank." This site includes exerpts from Anne's diary, lesson plans and downloadable readers' guides for teachers. Go directly to "Ann Frank: Life and Times" to access the excerpts from her diary and the scrapbook. This include pictures and artifacts along with a biography of Anne Frank suitable for middle school students.
In the Classroom
A "scrapbook" section would be very effective on a projector or interactive whiteboard. The scrapbook might function as a good anticipatory activity to set up a unit on the diary, although it does give away the ending of the story. There is also a section for teachers which includes some downloadable handouts, a bibliography and other resources.If you are teaching about World War II, this would be a good resource to share on your teacher web pages for independent projects.

This resource provides information about the life of Anne Frank and also enables you to see the role the United States played in the Second World War and the Holocaust. This online guide, which can be viewed in almost twenty different languages, helps students create a project or prepare a talk. The Timeline gives an overview of the most important events in the life of Anne Frank and the Second World War. The Search function is a valuable tool that allows you to type in a word and see what sections of the site contains that word, so you get all the information in one place. Although you must register to use the online project maker, you can view images and information about a variety of themes related to the holocaust and World War II by just clicking on the topic or images, without having to log in.
In the Classroom
You can use this online guide in a variety of ways ranging from simplistic to complex. It can give you project ideas, and you can collect relevant information and images on a variety of related themes, such as persecution and the liberation and aftermath, right from this site. Use this site for research and challenge your students to use a site such as Preceden, reviewed here, to create and share interactive timelines. Have students or student groups create an online, interactive poster using Genial.ly, reviewed here. Students must register to start an online project, which allows them to save all the information they have collected, so that they may come back and continue their work from where they left off.
