Part of the National Park Service "Teaching with Historic Places" series, this site uses the Manzanar Japanese-American internment camp as a starting point for an exploration of the internment activities that took place during World War II. As with other lessons in this series, the lesson asks students to interpret archival photos and draw conclusions from the images and contemporary accounts of the internment.
In the Classroom
This is a very detailed and intricate lesson that can easily last a few days. However it is very informative and provides information about Japanese internment camps that is often brushed over in the book. Introduce this site to the class using a projector to show them how to navigate. Break students into groups with each group investigating one of the people on this page, and don't forget to assign a group to research the Spanish Armada. There is a TON of information on this site, so be sure to know what you are looking for if entering. One aspect that is extremely helpful are all the maps provided. Save and download some of the maps to use in presentation about the current or historical events in Iraq. Students are often confused about the geography of the Middle East, so the image can help them organize their thoughts. This sight would also be useful for any students completing a research project or paper on Iraq. This multi-sensory website features video clips from around the world. This website is an amazing visual treat for students (and teachers). GeoBeats, based out of Washington, D.C., has filmmakers throughout 45 countries. All video clips promise reliability, personality, and relevance. All facts are research based. You have the choice of location AND the choice of topic. Some examples of locations include Austria, Egypt, Finland, Canada, Greece, India, Mexico, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, and many other countries. The topics you can choose from vary by location. Some examples of possible topics include chocolate shops (in Paris), the Colosseum, local etiquette, and many others. The neat thing about the topics is they vary from tourist attractions, local customs, food, city life, modes of transportation, and countless others.
In the Classroom
Take your students on a journey around the world. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share specific video clips with your class. This website is also useful for individual research on numerous destinations throughout the world. Why not assign each student a different country to research. Originally designed as a companion site to a NOVA program, the site could be the focus of a great computer lab activity for an ancient history unit.

The China Guide offers a fantastic panoramic video of the Great Wall of China. Throughout the panoramic video, viewers can choose to enter various areas of the structure and "walk" to other areas and towers along the wall. Snippets of history and other explanations are provided while taking the tour. The site provides a realistic opportunity for students to view the Great Wall of China in a manner other than pictures. Many of the photos appear in pop-up windows, so you need to turn off your pop up blocker for THIS site only.
Be aware: this site was created by a travel agency, so you will encounter some advertisements for booking trips.
In the Classroom
This site would be a great introductory lesson into a unit on China. Show the panoramic video on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Allow students to conduct the walk by choosing where the video takes them. Have students explore this site with a partner and then find a photo (legally permitted) of the Great Wall of China. Have students use PowerPoint Online, reviewed here, to narrate the photo that they chose. Colorful graphics and an easy-to-follow layout allow you to virtually explore Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Trans-Siberian Railway or the main waterways. You'll also find links to Russian history, art, architecture, and other interesting facts. Click on "The Gazeteer" for a summary of Russia today, or follow the "Activities" link to find out about wildlife preservation of the Siberian tiger.

The Smithsonian has created a colorful, if sometimes awkward, resource for studying African history, art, and culture. The site features works by African sculptors and artists, but the African history time-line is the most useful instructional component. It shows African influences in Spain, the New World, and many other places. We hope the content for these sections will expand over time. Still, this is a very useful resource for explaining the evolution and spread of African cultural elements.
In the Classroom
Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a unit about the slave trade in Africa or as review. The timeline begins in the 1400's with the Portuguese, and extends until the mid 1800's. What is nice about the timeline is that to access the additional information, you have to click on the specific event. Which means that before you access the event, you can test student knowledge before checking the answer in the background. This Japanese site offers a collection of classical Japanese artwork, suitable for study as part of an exposure to Japanese history. The interface isn't the greatest, and the images contain watermarks, but the site works fine as an example of the unique nature of Japanese artistic representations.
In the Classroom
Use these images in a picture walk around the classroom to introduce or review a unit on some aspect of Japanese culture. Select 10-15 images to be hung around the classroom, with students rotating between them every 30-60 seconds. Have students fill out quickly what they observe and infer about each image, with the intentions of connecting each image to an essential understanding about Japanese culture.
