There are newspapers included from South East Asia, Central America, Middle East, and nearly every country throughout the world. There are some minor advertisements at this website.
In the Classroom
Students can update reports and research by accessing newspapers from around the world. Any of your favorite newspaper learning activities can transfer to a newspaper in another part of the USA or world. Foreign language teachers and students will enjoy using the foreign presses for authentic learning. One of the twentieth century's real giants, Churchill's accomplishments go well beyond the content on this companion site to the PBS series of the same name. While most famous as a World War II leader, his influence on the British government stretched from the 1920s well into the 1950s. This site is a great introduction, but serious secondary students should be prepared to delve more deeply.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on WWII. Because there is a lot of information on this site, it would probably work best if students had a graphic organizer to guide them through. Allow students to view the dates of many of the inventions to determine what scientific principle was just known to push technological thinking. For younger students, create a timeline of inventions to enhance learning and determine the impact of science, economy, and society on inventions. Use a site such as Sutori, reviewed here, that can include images, text, and collaboration. Ask older students to choose an invention and research other forms of that model, alternatives before and after, and what we are using today. The interactive map and hieroglyph translator provide an interesting lens through which students can view life in this era. Like other PBS empire sites, this site has a listing of lesson plans for expanding on these resources.

This is a Library of Congress collection of photos taken for the World Transportation Commission in the 1890s. Teachers, students, or parents could use this online archive to illustrate both what foreign nations were like a hundred years ago, and also the subjects that Americans were interested in recording during their journeys. This is a nice example of the primary resources which the Library makes available on the web.
In the Classroom
Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of evolving transportation. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. Explore a rich collection of Dr. Seuss' political cartoons during World War II. Seuss shows his very serious side in this collection of over 400 political cartoons related to the war. The collection is sorted by year and by battle, people, places, and issues. Each cartoon includes full citation and copyright information. Most are copyrighted and allow permission for scholarly use but cannot be copied or shared outside of "fair use." In other words, you cannot use them in online projects or make copies beyond classroom or offline student projects. You can easily share each cartoon via Twitter, Facebook, etc. Click the enlarge arrows to see the image in its own separate window and copy its URL.

Take a virtual field trip to one of the most famous and intriguing historic structures in the world. The Tower of London's crucial role in English history is provided along with an interactive map of the entire complex that permits independent investigation of every nook and cranny. Students can meet the prisoners who met their fate within the tower and those who succeeded in escaping. Read some spine-tingling ghost stories and discover the legend behind those ever-present ravens. Consider spicing up a study of the history of Great Britain with this entertaining and educational site. Though a few interactives require Flash, there is so much information, and so many interesting images that a visit to this site is worth your time.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a guide for a group activity researching the Tower of London. Seperate students in groups, randomly assigning each one of the many subject headings within the site. Have the groups read and interpret the contents of their section, to be presented to the class as a whole. Have students narrate and add text to an image using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Pikwizard, reviewed here. If you teach World History, this is the perfect site to get some extra ideas to make your unit more interesting for your students. In the blog, you will find information about Eleanor of Aquitaine, Castles Gardens, Saint George the Dragon Slayer, and others. If you have weak readers in the class, you may want to use Read Ahead, reviewed here to create a guided reading activity for the blog articles. This website provides easy-to-access information about numerous countries. The information focuses on what would interest travelers to each country: the main cities, sites of interest, geographical features, food, shopping, family activities, and books. There are approximately 40 countries included (such as Austria, Finland, Hong Kong, Israel, Canada, Cuba, Chile, Bali, Kenya, and numerous others). The highlight of this website is the wonderful annotated list of books about each country.
In the Classroom
Have students research various countries throughout the world -- maybe one from their famiy heritage. Use your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to have them share the various countries. Have your students read books from the various countries. Then challenge your students to create travel posters or broshures about the country. There are extensive subdivisions, each with its own presentation, images, timeline, and resources. There's a wealth of information here for any study of Africa and its history.

Use this site to add something tangible to the study of Africa. While there is an abundance of informational text, what is really great about this site are the audio files embedded with in each section. There are files of African music, professors talking, geologists, politicians, etc - all exhibiting the importance of African per historical era.
