The Library of Congress offers this searchable database of historical maps, which includes a large collection of city maps, maps of military battles and campaigns, maps related to transportation and communication, and maps focused on exploration and discovery. Within each category, you can search geographically or by time period. Each map accessed can be navigated using a zoom feature for better viewing. Maps cover a wide range of national and international subjects.
In the Classroom
Teachers with interactive whiteboards or projectors will find these maps a natural companion to lessons involving history, geography, and cultural changes. Sometimes seeing a map drawn at the same time as the event under discussion can lend a whole new understanding of the culture of the people being studied. It's far more dramatic to imagine sailing into the unknown on a voyage of discovery while you look at the only maps available to those aboard.Be sure to have students use the whiteboard tools to draw in their own "corrections" or annotations showing the movement of people or strategies used in battles. Since thee resources are in the public domain, you are allowed to copy them into your whiteboard software and keep the student annotations atop the maps, as well. The maps also make good visuals for "mock" blog entries by historical figures!

This virtual archaeological experience provides visitors with an up close and personal introduction to the Valley of the Kings. From the digs at Thebes, where students can zoom into the atlas and explore tombs by watching movies, to interactive diagrams and revealing thumbnail shots, the experience of revealing the secrets of an ancient culture is impressively simulated. Other features of the site include interactive maps that can be used to measure distance and elevation, printable tomb maps in PDF format, an exhaustive archaeological and image database, and a comprehensive timeline and glossary.
In the Classroom
This is an extensive resource, so provide your students with a plan of attack before turning them loose. Created by the Theban Mapping Project at the American University in Cairo.

This site covers the Victorian period (roughly 1837 through 1901) and addresses everything from political and social history to gender matters, authors, periodicals, philosophy, religion, technology, and more. Since this covers much of the development of industry in the Western world, it is an invaluable source for studying the arts and humanities. History teachers who study the Industrial Revolution will like this site for its connections between technology and other areas of society. Note that music is included in the "theatre and popular entertainment" section. The composer of every high school student's favorite theme song, "Pomp and Circumstance," is included among the profiles. Can you find him/her?
In the Classroom
In English, history, art or music classes, have students research aspects of Victorian times and present those pieces to the class. Everything from dressing up in costume to displaying the appropriate manners is game! Portraying authors, actors, and others at the popular soir?es using the language of the time would be a great learning experience for students. Students can test their core knowledge of English, French, German, math, social studies and more with this entertaining collection of interactive quizzes, puzzles and games. Click on the Learning Hub and select a level (elementary, middle school, or high school) to explore age-appropriate challenges across content areas. Many of the activities on this site are free, but registration and a fee are required to access some of the special features.
In the Classroom
Use the free quizzes to help students review OR as pre-diagnositc quizzes to determine what students already know about the topic. This is a great way to assess which areas need strengthening and which areas students need less help in. Although this site is no longer maintained, most links are working. This site introduces students to the religion of Islam. There is a 26-minute video, which includes questions and answers submitted by students. There are also informative guides, chats, quizzes, pictures, interviews and much, much more. Though some of the activities require Flash, there is still a lot to be learned at this site.
In the Classroom
If you are teaching your students about the religion of Islam or trying to introduce world cultures, this is one resource that you simply cannot do without. A brief, fairly simplistic game that illustrates the different forms that money can take: gold, paper money, items of value, a promise to pay in the future. The game involves a trip through time in which the player needs to choose various objects to use as currency. Wrong answers re-direct the user back to the list of choices. Right answers advance the user through the game.
