Though the ads can be a bit distracting, this would be a great site to help students review their United States geography. Introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing the class to answer the questions as a whole. To motivate students to participate, let student volunteers come up and select their answers on the interactive whiteboard. This Shockwave enhanced site from the BBC's education section provides a very concise walk through modern European history (1918 forward). The text - and it's mostly text - is presented in easily-digested segments, and there are supporting maps and other documentation where necessary. The site is particularly useful for its willingness to examine not just what happened, but why it happened. On-line quizzes make the site useful for self-study.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a way to review students before assessments. There are lots of short quizzes on a variety of subjects that can be either printed or shared on the interactive whiteboard or projector. One way to use them is to have students complete the quizzes for warmups as they come into class. If used in that way, they can also be used as activators to introduce a new unit. Find one minute listening exercises on such common activities as babysitting, chickens, and exercise. The listening selections are alphabetized with several selections for each letter of the alphabet. Each listening selection has a multitude of activities you can download (along with the reading text) in Word and pdf formats. Find Cloze paragraphs, fill in the blanks, words to unscramble, and much more. Many activities can also be viewed online. Each selection has two interactive quizzes. Though targeted for the ESL/ELL student, listening is one of the language arts standards, and this is a good way for any classroom teacher to address listening skills.

Use the selections and activities with individual students as an assignment or independent practice on your classroom computer. The reading and activities are easy to work on independently because of the listening feature. Don't forget to provide headsets. Small groups of students can listen at one of several literacy stations in your classroom. Provide this link for the families of ESL/ELL students to read (or listen) to the selections together. Looking for review materials for a variety of classes? Use for a wide range of curriculum topics. (A "learning object" is any kind of interactive activity, animation, video, audio file, etc, that can be used for learning.) This site is great for introductory, reinforcement, or review materials. Find most of the relevant topics by using the search bar. Choose from many subjects such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, math, sociology, world languages, and written communication, among others. Gifted students or those who learn well independently can study Chinese and other topics not easily available in their school using WISC-Onkine.
In the Classroom
Find a variety of topics for each subject area. For example, use WISC-Online in biology topics: How to use a Microscope, Life Cycles of Animals and Plants, and Cell Division. Choose from many others. Use as an introduction to a new unit. Additionally, these topics can be used for reinforcement or as a review. Under the Written Communication subject you will find 50 activities from parts of speech, commonly confused words, to how to summarize, brainstorm, and many others. Share direct URLs to specific review activities to help students who need extra practice or as links on a class web page or wiki for all students to access outside of class. Although this is more than ten years out of date, there is a lot of reliable information here that can be used to establish a background for the current conflict in Afghanistan. Use this site as an activator for a unit on the modern conflict today. Have students read the article for a class discussion on it's accuracy and whether or not the events have played out as the author predicted. Students always seem to love looking at castles, so let students peruse the site in cooperative learning groups. This site challenges your group to act as chief water engineers, creating an aqueduct for the ancient Roman city of Aqueductis. You have the choice of five different structures to build the duct. When you put the items in the correct order, the city will receive water. Also, take a look at "Let's Build An Aqueduct!", that uses popcycle sticks to build the aqueduct. oth acBtivities have a materials list and you will need to download directions in PDF or Word format.
In the Classroom
For a whole group activity, share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. This site would be great to use with small groups of students. Have students work together and see how long it takes for them to get water to the city. Use the manual to help students identify and learn about the five different structures (covered trench, tunnel, pressurized pipe, wall, and arcade). Compare the ancient structures with the way we move water today, including modern day aqueducts. Penzu offers a FREE service to write journals or diaries online with exceptional privacy options. As an added benefit, you can add images or your own artwork as illustrations. There is a very short demo video on the home page. On Penzu you can keep everything completely private or share selective posts by email or URL. Perhaps share selections on a class wiki page? Don't have a wiki? See the TeachersFirst Wiki Walk-Through for practical management and safety tips for a class wiki. Note: Premium service is available, but this review is for the free version.
In the Classroom
A class journaling program has limitless possibilities. Engage students in discussions using a topic from current events, current social issues, independent reading, literature, and more. Any class using a journal can use Penzu. For example, science lab write ups or the problem of the week in math. Penzu can even be used for homework. Just think, no more lugging heavy boxes full of notebooks around! In language arts have students journal daily and harvest from their musings and ideas to create a short story or a poem. They can even use Penzu to develop their brainstorms and rough draft. For social studies classes, students can write posts and ideas about famous people or daily life in a time period being studied, then create a "diary" for the famous person in Bookemon, reviewed here or a poster using Genially, reviewed here about daily life. For either of these ideas, once they are ready to present a final project have them hare with their peers and others and possibly add other media. This comprehensive site on the African Slave Trade is robust enough for those doing serious research, and accessible enough for those who want an overview and supporting materials for a classroom survey. There are maps, 3D Video Reconstructions, links to resources, an image bank, and large, searchable and downloadable data bases of African names, ships used in the slave trade and their voyages, tables of data focused on the number of slaves involved, and timelines.
In the Classroom
If you are teaching a course that covers the African slave trade, this site will be invaluable. Take some time to browse the maps and timelines and find images that can be used to supplement reading and discussion. Discover the glossary of terms that could be used for vocabulary work, the tables of information useful for teaching data analysis, and the African name database for genealogy research.
