C'est Magnifique! Find out all about the most famous landmark in Paris. There's lots of information on the tower itself, a virtual tour, and a panoramic view from the top. This is certainly a nice way to introduce French geography and culture. The site incluea a section for kids and a quiz. Note: to read in French, click the French flag. Some of the interactive tour portions require a special Active X plug-in. When prompted, you will need to install these.

In the Classroom

This is definitely a site to share on a projector or to allow students to explore on laptops or in a lab. Give them some questions to answer and send them "touring."

Find out how much you know about customs around the world with this entertaining, interactive quiz that focuses on table manners in various countries. A fun and eye-opening introduction to the sometimes humorous etiquette that defines a culture.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on global culture. Have students complete the site individually on classroom computers. While it's not something likely to be tested by state standards, it is a great way to get students interested in the differences between cultures AND provide a break from more intense learning centers.

This interactive game challenges students to correctly identify specific oceans and continents while keeping track of accuracy. A great independent review activity.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard as a review game post-instruction about the continents and world oceans. Separate students into cooperative learning groups and have a team competition on the interactive whiteboard to see which team can complete the map the quickest. It's a quick game, but students will definitely get into it and the repetition of seeing other teams complete it will make the activity more effective!

This site accompanies an exhibition of 4,000 rare books, maps, documents, paintings, prints, and ojects focused on the early Americas from the time of the indigenous people of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean through the period of European contact, exploration, and settlement. There is a nice picture gallery of exhibits and a comprehensive bibliography. This site provides some nice visuals for a unit on indiginous peoples of the Americas. The picture gallery has some lovely maps from the Francis Drake expedition, and the information about buccaneers would provide a nice balance to the "Pirates of the Carribean" fantasy depiction of pirates.

In the Classroom

Use portions of this site on a projector in class or spend a day on a "web hunt" with students answering questions you give them to find within the site. There is plenty to explore.

This truly engaging site will whet your students' appetites for learning. The history and origin of chocolate (from its start in the Amazon rainforests to its invasion of Europe) is presented through photographs, images, and an easy to understand text. Possible health effects, both positive and negative, are discussed, and the process of "tempering" is explored with a step by step experiment that can be reproduced in the classroom. A virtual tour takes visitors inside the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Factory in San Francisco for an up-close look at the chocolate making process. Created by the Exploratorium. (Requires RealVideo)

In the Classroom

The article entitled "Chocolate invades Europe" is a great way to show how one good can affect the entire economy of a continent. Share the article on the interactive whiteboard or projector to allow students to read together in class. As a class create a Venn Diagram discussing what they know about chocolate now to another product such as sugar, tobacco, or even slaves if your class is mature enough to look at the economics of the issue. This is a great find for US and World history teachers.

This lesson plan also includes several interactive click-and-drag activities, a link to a multimedia site that introduces students to workers within a typical community, a "student version" that can used as a complete Web based activity, and downloadable worksheets and materials. Aligned to National Standards.

Rome Reborn is, as its title implies, a digital representation of Rome on June 21, 320 AD. Currently, several views and videos are available. The clips look like a cross between a "Google Earth" fly-in and the backdrop for a video game. While they have the potential to give students a "you are there" vision of ancient Rome,

In the Classroom

The still views and video clips are ideal for use with an interactive whiteboard or projector during a discussion of ancient Rome. Use them as a companion to current photographs of the Colosseum, or the Roman Forum, for example. Ask your more creative students what suggestions they might have to portray Rome. What would they like to "see"? More "techie" humanities students may be interested in following the project and/or attempting to communicate with project participants.

Here's a really first-rate treatment of the Middle East, its three primary religious subtexts, and the relationship of these to issues like global economics, literature, and history. Users will find a wealth of time-lines, as well as a series of "connecting questions" about issues like the role of women, nation-states, and the impact of stereotypes on international perceptions about this region. Lots of "extended thinking" opportunities here. The video trailers on this site require QuickTime, however all the other available information make this site worth a visit.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities available on this site! Because of the international focus, this would be great in a world history course OR a US government class.

The Veterans History Project is both a valuable historical resource and a terrific jumping off point for a serious student or group project. The Veterans History Project uses volunteer contributors to gather remembrances from war veterans and civilians who worked in support industries. The Project includes audio interviews, interview transcripts, letters, and other primary documents related to US wars beginning with World War I up through the present conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Use the site to search for and access already preserved accounts, or to design a student project to gather new accounts (note however that volunteers are limited to students in 10th grade or older).

At the time of this review the "listening" feature was not available on the Chrome browser, however it does work if you use the Edge browser.

In the Classroom

Primary documents are a vital link between the students of today and the experiences of real people from the past. Students can access these interviews and accounts through searching by time period (WWI through the present), branch of service, gender, or POW status. As your class studies a particular conflict, assign students different accounts to research and then have them "portray" that person in a panel discussion about the war. Compare the experiences of persons filling similar roles across conflicts. Examine gender differences or the differences between those serving in the Navy and the Army. For a powerful long-term project, download the site's "field kit" and consider gathering new accounts for the project in your community. Use the search bar to find "field kit."

The Academy for Educational Development is operating a project to provide backpacks with educational supplies to school children in Afghanistan. Teachers and parents may find this an attractive service opportunity for students eager to "do something" about the plight of civilians in Afghanistan and the middle east. The backpacks cost $10 each.

In the Classroom

For students interested in how they can help the economic and educational problems in Afghanistan, recommend this site as a means for them to get involved. While a teacher shouldn't require participation in a relief effort like this - it's still a great idea to pass it around in the hopes that someone can make a difference.

Although too outdated to be a current event's piece, this site could be used to study the ever-evolving nature of the Chinese government. In the late 1980s, perfectly preserved 3,000 year old mummies began appearing in a remote desert in China. Surprisingly, they possessed the physical characteristics of Europeans and did not appear to be ancestors of the modern-day Chinese. Where did they come from? How were they preserved? What can linguistics reveal about such ancient people? The site explores these unsolved mysteries and makes connections to similar finds throughout the world.

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on Ancient China in a World History classroom. Because there's a lot of content on this site, try creating a guide to help students understand what's the most significant.
