Includes interactive activities and a downloadable teacher's guide. Though some of the features require Flash, there is so much to see and do on this site, it's worth a visit.

Use the table of contents on the left to discover facts about how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world. Learn about Christmas in Sweden, Mexico, Italy, Ukraine, Greece and many other countries; each country has links to investigate in the text. Use the search to find the "History of Christmas" page with many more interesting sections like a video titled Christmas Becomes a Holiday, and sections about How the Civil War Changed Christmas in the United States, a Christmas Photoo Gallery, History of Christmas Trees, United States, How 25 Christmas Traditions Got Their Start, and lots more.
In the Classroom
Use the video on the "History of Christmas" page to show students how the tradition of Christmas evolved from ancient times. The section about the Christmas Truce of 1914 would be a really great find for a class working on WWI, particularly if the timing is right before the holidays. Unfortunately the video on that page is not free to view at this time; it accompanies the article, and teachers can just as easily display or print the article to share the same information. This Web Quest engages students in examining the complexities of Victorian society through the eyes of Ebenezer Scrooge. Having developed a new attitude after visitations from the three spirits, Scrooge is ready to change the world by running for mayor of London. Students - working as campaign managers - must help Ebenezer develop campaign points and outline strategies to woo the public into accepting his ideas for social reform. Aspects of Victorian life described in A Christmas Carol, form the basis for this activity, although it could easily be adapted to any of his other novels.
In the Classroom
This would actually be a great resource for a government class working right before the holidays! During a unit on campaigns, use this activity as a way for students to think outside of the box in applying their lessons. This could even be used alongside a language arts classroom studying "A Christmas Carol," to ensure all students are up to snuff on Scrooge's character. In the Classroom
Use the "celebrate Birthdays" to create a "this day in history" display for the classroom. The other sections of the website would be excellent to review for any subject, so find the appropriate subject and have students open the site on individual computers. In groups of 2-3, have students compete to see who can get the highest score! Take your students on a virtual tour of Japan with this beautifully designed site that investigates Japanese culture from a kid's perspective. It's easy to navigate and filled with easy-to-understand text, pictures, and interactive surprises. Complete a virtual origami airplane, compose a tune on the koto, and learn to say some basic everyday phrases in Japanese. Though some of the features require Flash, there is SO much to see and do on this site, it's worth a visit. Provide some direction for your students before turning them loose.

As you can see from the previous description, there is a lot to learn at this site. The interactive still require flash, however there is so much more to read and images to vies. .

Click on the Learning Hub and select a level (elementary, middle school, or high school) to explore age-appropriate challenges across content areas. Many of the activities on this site are free, but registration and a fee are required to access some of the special features.

This is a timely and thought-provoking resource that can generate some purposeful class discussion.

This is a great site for a Cultural Geography class studying population and TFR. Use the fact sheets on this site about several developing nations to start a class discussion on population growth, and factors that contribute to a growing or decreasing population.
