Students can simply click on a letter and watch several examples of words, pictures, and sounds relating to each letter. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Combine the explicit instruction provided on the site with phonemic awareness instruction in kindergarten or with ESL and ELL students for better letter-sound relationships. Allow students to use this site during center time for reiteration of the lesson or for areas in which they are struggling. Take a journey through the life of Frank Sadoras. This site has a wonderful collection of photographs and biographical documents that chronicles Frank's life growing up on a farm in Illinois from 1898-1912. By using this site, you and your students will get a view of what life was like growing up on a farm as well as the photographic techniques Frank used to take his photos.
In the Classroom
This site is a good site to use if you want to introduce more primary sources into your teaching. There is an extensive activities and resource section that covers the topics of photography, history, farming and genealogy. In addition, the PDF entitled the Turning Point would be a good resource to use in a lesson on narrative writing. Share the photos in art (or photography) class on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have students create blog entries from the perspective of Frank Sadorus. Use the pictures for creative writing exercises. Why not have a photo of the week and have students write a short piece on the class wiki about what they feel the picture represents, what is happening in the photo, what the animal or person was doing/thinking in the photo, or whatever else is applicable in your class. A clearinghouse for many organizations with that same goal, this website connects those in need of literacy with those who can give reading materials and support. Numerous sponsors who have come forward to help children hungry for literacy. Teachers who know of disadvantaged students can find literacy resources here. Links to multiple literacy organizations and an extensive list of children's magazine websites make this site a treasure trove of information.

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on folk tales and short stories. This would be a great way to encourage ELL's and lower achieving readers to become interested in reading. Have students watch the stories on classroom computers, creating a timeline of the story, establishing the chain of events. This is a great way to get students thinking about timelines, and help those who are aided by the visual elements of the site. This up-to-date general biography site is maintained by the town of Uxbridge, Ontario. Montgomery lived near here during her adult life after leaving Prince Edward Island, and this site has good information on where she lived when she wrote her famous books--as well as a chronological listing of the books. This neat Montgomery site gives insight into who the author was and how biographical her works were. There is a link to the Uxbridge Historical Centre.

This site is better for teachers than students to use as a resource. There is a link to Sullivan Movies, the creators of the famous Canadian "Anne of Green Gables" series, at which you can buy resources from DVD's to books, posters, etc. if you can't resist shopping. Find links to four online texts of the Anne books as part of the Gutenburg collection.Use passages from these online texts for interactive whiteboard activities from parts of speech to analyzing writing style, then introduce the author once the students are "hooked" by the passages!

Though Windows to the Universe is basically a science site, it has many links that will connect science with language arts, history, and math. Find an abundance of information and activities for your classroom. There are numerous science categories, and within each category you can choose "Beginner," "Intermediate," or "Advanced." You can also see the site in Spanish. This site has excellent visuals and numerous topics, and several educational interactives (under "Games"). Don't miss it! The audio has been updated to MP3, however, the Interactives and Videos require Flash or QuickTime, regardless, there is so much more to do and learn at this site that it is worth a visit.
In the Classroom
You will want to preview the categories and levels your students are to explore. Investigate categories with your students, using your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have small groups of students choose a subcategory to further explore. Create beautiful multimedia digital books with Book Creator. Scroll down the landing page to the bottom menu, and click the "Help With Getting Started" title. Note: This points out how you need to change to the "teacher sign in" (the default is for students). This is a wonderful tool with many features. Reading the short Getting Started Overview first and watching the beginning videos would be best. Then, you can go to the Resources tab from the top menu, where each grade level has a video, and you'll find example books created by students. Under Resources, you can also search by subject to find suggested ideas and books designed for a specific subject. Next, click Resources from the top menu to find the "Teach your first lesson toolkit" with lesson plans, remixable student templates for different age ranges, and a teacher guide. You can also choose Remixable Books to get you and your class started. When finished, publish and share your book using the site's web-based reader for access on any device. Once you have mastered the basics, click on Features to see the magic of using the pen and discover all the features of the graphic organizers, comics, and more. By clicking the "more" you will can embed documents on your page(s). These documents can be narrated and interactive! The free plan offers one library with up to 40 books storage. Book Creator presents a variety of levels for technology use depending on teacher requirements for the project or even student ability; it allows for adding narration, videos, text, using your webcam, and adding links to help explain the artwork. When creating your book, click on the big + in the upper right corner to add text, audio, images, your camera, and the pen; you will also see The lowercase "i" (for inspector), which offers colors, comics, paper type, and more. There are other apps, but you must have a premium account. You can use Book Creator on iPads, Macs, Android devices, PCs, and on these browsers: Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Chrome. Teachers need to provide an email to create an account. However, students do not need emails to make their books. Once ready, follow the site's prompts to add video, text, images, audio, and more to your book.

Create books together, as a class, as you move through a unit or topic. Enhance student learning by adding images and ideas your students suggest. Use in a flipped classroom to deliver course information. Assign several student groups a different topic and redefine their learning by having each group create their own multimedia versions as they learn more about the topic. Students can combine their books later as a class book. Make a digital bookshelf of all the versions for all to use. Challenge gifted students to modify the "standard" class text with the additional material they discover, by going deeper and learning about related topics. In lower grades, create teacher-made e-books for your young readers, perhaps adding audio - your own voice reading the text. Practice telling time to the hour with this entertaining activity. Upon starting, a time is given, then click the minus or plus hours until the clock shows the correct time and check the time. If correct, feedback of "Well Done!" is provided, a wrong answer moves the wolf closer to Red Riding Hood. Too many wrong answers and the wolf gobbles up Red Riding Hood! You may need to teach students to read number words and "o'clock" before using this site or have a chart close by for them to compare numbers to text for pre-readers as all information is given with text.

Letter Zoo is a lesson idea geared to primary-aged students working on letter recognition. The site demonstrates how to create animals and other creatures using various letters of the alphabet (both uppercase and lowercase). It provides several templates as examples. This is a tactile way for students to learn the letters of the alphabet.
In the Classroom
Assign each student a personal letter(s) and have him/her create pages for a class book. PowerPoint works well to create BIG BOOK pages electronically using WORD ART of the letters as the graphics (rotate the letter using the green "dot" at the top and drag/resize as you do clip art). Provide a template with the letters already on the slides and allow students to arrange them. Allow students to branch out and create designs other than animals. It is always interesting to see how creative they can be! Have students present their creations in a showcase format and attempt to identify the letters on each display.Use your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to share these activities (animals) with your class. See if they can figure out all of the letters used in the pictures. Then write some sentences together to accompany the pictures. Make the PowerPoint file available from your teacher web page or by email so students can "read aloud" at home, too.

You can even write comments to parents about why a student lost a point. Weekly summaries are automatically emailed to parents. Students can earn badges. On ClassDojo students can now have their own portfolio to share photos and videos of their successes. The wording on the ClassDojo site indicates that ClassDojo "will always stay free for teachers."

In the Classroom
Consider using this program to reward a group of the week. Award points for positive behaviors such as participation, helping others, creativity, hard work, or create your own categories. Using ClassDojo for group behaviors will give immediate feedback to students if projected on your whiteboard or your projector. Use this tool to help your unfocused students stay on task. Share this site with students on the first day of school as you go over class expectations and your behavior plan for your classroom. Use ClassDojo to offer both negative and positive feedback to parents and students.Are you a regular education teacher with special education students mainstreamed into your classroom? Use Class Dojo to privately keep track of student behaviors and send a report to special education teachers or parents. This could be invaluable to a life skills, autistic support, gifted, or emotional support teacher who needs to track the behavior of each of the students as part of an IEP/GIEP. Alternative ed programs may find this tool very useful, as well, even up through high school.
