Looking for a fun site students will enjoy visiting? The many interactives on this page is for you. Teachers will get loads of great teaching ideas by viewing the site and students will be inspired to write and illustrate their own ideas about this well loved story. You can take quizzes, complete crossword puzzles, and more. The Book Trailer is hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube it may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
With older students you may want to introduce Charlotte's Web with the Book Trailer on your intreactive whiteboard or with a projector. Read aloud some of the other author's comments about the book. Include a link to games on classroom computers and your class website for students to access during learning centers or at home. This site offered by Campbell Union School District presents students with lessons to write a fact based poem about a barnyard animal, a descriptive paragraph about barns, an opinion piece about spiders, and a persuasive letter for Fern. Created by teacher Scholastic this resourse is a complete interdisciplinary unit. The Unit includes thought provoking questions on topics relevant to the award winning book by Scott O'Dell and today's students. This unit has a glossary (vocabulary) and questions to guide students for each chapter. After completing the lessons teacher's can use a rubric created for this unit as a final assessment. Teachers will find the lessons are detailed and clearly written. Student's may find the suggested extension activities both interesting and challenging.
In the Classroom
If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, this unit has two simple, interactive tools for your students to use. In addition, have students create blogs (exchange writing in a paper journal) sharing their learning and understanding using Weebly, reviewed here. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, replace pencil and paper and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

The National Park Service presents this massive unit for Island of the Blue Dolphins. See the village, visit the island, and learn about the sea life around the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students will love this artistic interactive site full of pictures they can click on to visit links that ask questions and give more information. Across the top menu are many resources for teachers and students. There is an "About the Author" with a short biography about Scott O'Dell. Choose to follow the story by chapter or theme. Click the picture for each chapter and scroll to the bottom to find a writing prompt and lesson plan. There are many clickable resources in-between.
In the Classroom
If you use literature circles (small reading groups) in your classroom, using a unit like this and allowing the groups to go through the unit at their own pace, or suggesting a jigsaw approach to reviewing a set of chapters is a good way to make this unit "student centered." Learn about the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach at Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here. Enhance student learning by asking them to make an Infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, about what they learned from the novel; an inforgraphic would be a great conclusion for the lit circle project. Post the infographics on your web page for all your students and their parents to enjoy.

Here's a great explanation of all aspects of Writer's Workshop. Activities from 'Mini-lessons' to 'Sharing' (and all steps in-between) leading up to the crucial role of sharing student writing in group reading sessions are each discussed on this web page. Be sure to click "5 Editing Strategies That Actually Work For Student Writers." Once students understand how to edit someone elses work, their writing improves. This is a wealth of usable information for a teacher new to Writer's Workshop.
In the Classroom
Include this site with your other resources for practicing and teaching writing as you challenge students to improve feedback scores. Ask students to analyze their writing before getting the feedback from their peers as a self-reflection tool. As students improve writing, use a digital portfolio tool like Seesaw, reviewed here, and upload all revisions. Challenge your students to a discussion using the ideas from Thinkalong, reviewed here. To help students prepare for the discussion, have them write about their opinion(s) for selected questions first. Replace paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their thoughts and understanding about the book. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, exchange paper and pen and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. After completing the discussions, challenge older students to choose a question and create a script for the ideas that emerged from the discussion; then strengthen student learning and have them put it into a podcast. We've found a golden ticket! The Roald Dahl Story Company offers a colorful PDF that will enhance any classroom's reading of this cherished chocolate tale by Roald Dahl. We love the simple but well done literacy activities accompanied by illustrated by cartoon characters. Be sure to project them as you explain the lesson. Story questions, themes, and excerpts are organized by chapter. There is a list of materials and lesson plans for sale at the end, but this review is only for this free lesson plan.
In the Classroom
This site works really well with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students can view the cartoon figures on the board and then review what to do on the handouts on the interactive board. The printables can be used by an entire class or for individual students. During times of remote or distance learning, put a link to this site on your class web page for parents and students to use at home, with directions for what you want them to do, of course. It has a brief Book Summary of Beverly Cleary' story , a paragraph About the Author with a few details, 9 vocabulary words suitable for 4th and 5th Grade students, and 5 questions that lack depth. Teachers may be able to use this site for information to share with younger students while the book is being read aloud in class, or as individual assignments for the older student who need a starting place for a book report. We wish there were more detailed classroom applications.

Use it to help young children "work on feelings about separation and independence, memory skills, developing self-control, and expressing feelings." There are three videos to watch and discuss, as well as resources for classroom use, and resources to share with parents about separation.
In the Classroom
Discover the delightful Daniel Tiger and his friends and family through these videos. Even your youngest nursery school students will be able to relate to the characters, images, and story in these three films. They will probably want to watch them again and again! Parents and students alike will benefit from the resources provided. There is also a Teacher Tips sheet that provides suggestions for helping children adjust to separating from their families for awhile. Have students write an essay, poem, editorial - depending on what's being studied, based on what they see in their image. We suspect that this very nice introduction to Hanukkah was written for non-practicing Jews. As a result, it works for both Jews and non-Jews. You'll find information on the history of Hanukkah, descriptions and instructions for Hanukkah observances, and other information about Judaism.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Perhaps start with the Basics tab at the top and have students take the Hanukkah Quiz as a formative assessment. Then have small groups of students assigned to the different sections from the top menu. Use Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here for students to research their section and share with others.
