The National Forensic League bills itself as the "National Honor Society for secondary and middle school speech and debate." Certainly this site will be familiar if you are a member already, but is useful even if you are not fielding a formal competition team. The site is organized by level and contains information about upcoming competitions. Most useful to non-members, however, are the resources. There are downloads offering insight and instruction on a wide variety of speech and debate topics: how to organize a team, how to link speech and debate to the Common Core State Standards, and how to develop character in an interpretive speech. Access to some of the resources is limited to members; others require you to login to access.

Use the downloadable PDF documents as a resource for students who are developing their public speaking or debate skills, learning to analyze literary characters, understanding the use of humor in speech, or similar topics. Teacher's Buddy offers AI tools just for teachers. The free plan includes ten tools that create lesson plans, generate stories and poems, and adapt coursework for neurodiverse students. After creating an account, begin using Teacher's Buddy by creating a new workspace for your activities. Select an age group and choose from the available tools. Follow the directions to provide the topic and context, and connect to your Google Drive to upload documents if desired. When finished, edit the content as you wish, then save the document to your Google Drive or share using the provided link. Learn more about the different features of Teacher's Buddy by watching the tutorial videos shared on the site. Always verify the accuracy of content generated by AI before using it.

Tableizer is a "cool tool" for creating HTML code to show spreadsheet data in table format. No one wants to learn how to write HTML (web page code) to make tables, but adding a table to your blog is sometimes a must to line up information into columns. Copy and paste your cells from Excel, Calc, or other spreadsheets into the box provided. Choose options such as font size and style and color. Click the Tableize it! button to view the HTML code along with a preview of the results. Copy and paste the HTML code into any web page you create, such as your blog or wiki. The best part: no registration is required.

WordWanderer is a fascinating experimental visual tool that seeks to improve your experience with a text. See how it works by selecting from texts included in the dropdown box or copy and paste the text of your choosing. After making a selection, click the "wander" icon to use the tool. Hover your cursor over any of the words to highlight additional words connected to the original. Click on a word to view a list of uses of that word within the text. Select words and draw lines to view connections within the text. Use the options box to select types of speech to include in your visual or to hide common words. Be sure to look at the help box to understand the three different views offered within the WordWanderer interface.

Use WordWanderer to explore and introduce many different types of text. For example, paste in a portion of a novel or chapter from a science or social studies text to share with students. Use the different features to explore connections between words and discuss vocabulary. Ask students to paste text from their work into this tool as a means for exploring their work in depth. Ask questions such as how often some words appear, can you find different adjectives, or did you use the same one too often? Explore images created by Ideogram users by scrolling through the home page and selecting any image to view the prompt used to create it. Additional links include options to save images as favorites, remix them, or retry creating them. Free accounts allow you to make up to 25 images daily. Enter your prompt in the chat bar and choose from options for size, privacy, and image style. Each prompt generates four images. Open any image and right-click to save it on your device.

Ideogram is an excellent tool for creating AI-generated images and a valuable resource for learning how to create effective prompts. Scroll through the home page to find images of interest, then open the picture to view the prompt used to make it. Teach students how to write descriptive sentences by creating AI-generated images; students quickly learn how to add specific details to create a desired output. Use Ideogram to engage students in creative writing projects by generating images based on anything their imaginations share. Include AI-generated images in your classroom newsletter, website, or worksheets as an easy resource for adding pictures without spending much time searching for the right photograph. Share this site with students to include images in multimedia projects, such as those created using Sway, reviewed here or edublogs, reviewed here. Use the Wheel of Life to create a visual image for evaluating historical and literary characters. The wheel offers up to eight categories to edit and use in evaluations. Begin with the included examples, such as citizenship, health, and joy, or click on any category titles to change them to fit your needs. After identifying categories, use the slider bars to rate your character in each category using a scale of 1 to 10. As ratings are assigned, the display on the wheel adjusts to reflect the rating and matches the color on the slider bar. Next, use the text boxes on the right side of the screen to give your wheel a title and explain each of the choices made. When finished, save or print your Wheel of Life.

The Wheel of Life template is an interesting addition to current classroom resources for evaluating literary or historical characters. Ask students to share their thoughts on the essential characteristics to include when assessing characters and ask them to justify their inclusions. For example, when discussing Abraham Lincoln, is it important to include wealth, or is there a better trait to include that defines his impact on society? Ask groups of students to create a Wheel of Life based upon characters, then compare and contrast what they included and found necessary to include as character traits. Use student-created templates to highlight important information to include when writing biographies or when creating presentations. In the Classroom
Create a survey as an exit slip to identify student understanding or misunderstandings. Use a poll on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study by asking questions about the material. Discuss in groups why those in class would choose a particular answer to uncover misconceptions. Use for Daily quiz questions to gain knowledge of student understanding and a means of formative assessment. Create a question that matches the day's lesson to determine how well students are able to solve a similar problem. Use the survey to collect data from students for use in a Math class (such as calculating means and medians) or in a Social Sciences/Psychology class to determine trends and opinions. Prepare your students to use today's digital tools to solve tomorrow's problems. Join this session and learn to use forms and spreadsheets for basic data collection and analysis. You'll learn to use these tools to design authentic learning activities that provide support while facilitating deep learning. Return to the classroom prepared to help your students take on challenges and communicate their findings. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Learn the basic use of spreadsheets; 2. Explore authentic ways to include forms and/or spreadsheets in instruction; and 3. Plan for the use of forms and/or spreadsheets in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.
