ReadWriteThink presents this lesson to explore the role of superstitions in modern-day life. Historically, March 15 (the Ides of March) has been associated with doom and disaster. Even if you are not teaching Julius Ceasar's Rome or Shakespeare's play by the same name, you can engage your students by studying superstitions.
In the Classroom
Introduce this lesson with a brief discussion about what a superstition is and what are some superstitions your students know about. Create a Padlet, reviewed here with columns for categories of superstitions, for example, good and bad luck, walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella indoors, etc. After the discussions, follow the Classroom Activities and explore the Websites area, having students rotate through stations to explore the subject. As a culminating activity, ask students to create a video using Vmaker, reviewed here to share their impressions about superstitions (leave this wide open, whether they believe in them, have they discussed superstitions with anyone outside of class, and so on). Then, ask students to comment on at least two of their classmate's videos using Now Comment, reviewed here. You get a link to edit your poll, a link to send to voters, and a link to view results. Advanced poll options include preventing multiple votes from the same participant and receiving a notification when a new vote is submitted.
In the Classroom
Create curiosity, activate prior knowledge, and generate discussion before introducing a new topic or concept; create a poll with questions about the upcoming lesson. Display the poll on a screen or ask students to access it on their devices. Quickly generate formative assessment surveys throughout a lesson or unit. Students can also engage in peer discussion by comparing their responses and explaining their reasoning. Gauth uses AI to provide homework help in math and science topics, including chemistry, physics, calculus, and more. Under the menu topic - Subjects, you will also find help with Literature, Writing, Social Science, and others. To begin, upload a question or an image. Gauth then provides a step-by-step response with a detailed explanation of the answer. Find additional explanations by selecting Copilot, which is built into Gauth's platform, or by choosing from suggestions for related questions. You don't need to register, but doing so will allow access to your search history.
In the Classroom
Include Gauth with your other math and science support resources for students. Demonstrate how to ask questions and analyze the responses as a learning tool. Be sure to discuss the ethical use of AI tools with students as a learning tool and not a substitute for completing assignments. Encourage students to provide proper attribution when using Gauth. Share Gauth as a flipped learning tool for students to use as they begin to understand new concepts, then ask students to apply that knowledge to problems without using AI resources. Gravity offers a video response tool to promote asynchronous classroom discussions. Use Gravity to record video or audio prompts or create screen recordings to share. Register for an account using your email, then make a community to use as a home for video prompts. Prompts are then created in community folders and shared using a join code. Students join the discussion using the join code and create an account using their email. Free accounts for educators offer unlimited participants and one minute of video recording time.
In the Classroom
Use Gravity to create collaborative discussions on virtually any classroom topic. Challenge students to reflect on their learning at the end of a unit, research project, or literature circle. Here are just a few example questions to ask: What are some things you did well on this assignment? What mistakes did you make on your last assignment that you did not make on today's assignment? What would you do differently? What would you like to learn more about? Create a community folder for student questions; for example, ask students to create a screen-share video to demonstrate questions they have when solving math problems. Since the free version allows for only a one-minute prompt time and a one-minute reply per student, this is a good tool to teach students to be concise when responding, sharing only the important points.Edge Features:
