This site provides teachers with ready-to-use agricultural lessons that are both interactive and interesting to students of all ages. The site is geared towards grades 4-8, however there are activities for students in grades K-12. Students will enjoy the interactive "corn" scavenger hunt, witnessing the birth of pigs, seeing the Iowa of 150 years ago, virtual field trips and more. The web site is interdisciplinary and teacher-friendly.It includes numerous lesson plans (most interactive) and lots of new approaches to teaching subject matter. Requires QUICKTIME for video.

For those who just can't wait for the next Harry Potter book, this site offers plenty of Harry Potter news, discussions, galleries with possible title pages and other illustrations, a page of avatar graphics, links to Potter movie trailers, and anything imaginable to do with the books and/or the movies. This is a consumer site, so it is a bit more "Hollywood" than "education," but there are portions that promote discussion, character analysis, and pure love of reading.

This is a truly amazing and in-depth site that should satisfy even the most rabid of Harry Potter fans! It includes everything from maps to each of the Hogwarts houses to character descriptions to chapter-by-chapter summaries and essays about the books written by experts. Click on "The Wizarding World" and see the complete breakdown of what is covered. Just try to find something that is not!(Avoid the items for sale).

The graphics alone on this site make it worthwhile! Students will be captivated by the artwork. The Wizarding Maps are great for your visual students and in case you're worried about your science-minded kids trying the magic spells or potions, those pages direct students to the pages in the different books where they are referenced. A site to use and get lost in for both you and your students.Invite your students do a "book report" on another author by making a simple "page" of their own using PowerPoint to emulate a portion of this site.

Prezi is a visual, "zoomable" presentation tool. It is similar to PowerPoint and Keynote, but there is so much more to Prezi! You can graphically arrange a large amount of content, such as a big idea with its supporting information. It creates very dynamic presentations. See samples by clicking "log in" then "Explore" (instead of logging in). Choose a background, follow the instructions and prompts of the program, and before you know it, you will have your very own Prezi to share. If you like to see directions, watch the quick intro video. You can also view Prezis created by others and use them as templates for your own work. Check out the sample created by the TF Edge team here. This tool works in ANY device's web browser, from iPod to Android to laptop. Collaborate on a Prezi with other Prezi members in real time using the Share function. Have a "meeting" to work on the same Prezi in real time. There is a free "edu enjoy" level of membership (requires a school issued email and verification) that allows you to keep your Prezis private, out of public sharing. The regular "enjoy" membership is free for only one month, and its Prezis are public. After 30 days you will be asked if you want to upgrade or continue with the free Prezi, which has File storage limits for free accounts.
In the Classroom
You could map your entire lesson, chapter or unit in one Prezi. Once you introduce the concept with this tool, you can go back to it often with your students as you move to different parts of the unit. It would provide a great way to connect prior knowledge with the next step if you share this on your interactive whiteboard or projector throughout the unit. Or you could post it to your web page or give kids the URL so they can review as often as they need it. Try having the students map a concept or chapter with this tool. In history class, create timelines of relevant events, or in science or math class have them map steps in a process. Have students create Prezis for different events, and then have them post the link to their product on a class blog or wiki. Add a peer review component and require students to comment on at least two other Prezis. The possibilities are endless!If you have gifted students n your class, offer Prezi as one alternative for sharing extensions to the regular curriculum. If they already know the material, have them investigate a related process or example and share it in the form of a Prezi.

This literary device site includes the easy (metaphor, personification) to the hard (anaphora, aposiopesis, zeugma), literary devices that students may encounter in reading and studying literature. Some of the examples include clip art and some do not, but they all include both the answer and good examples.
In the Classroom
This may work for teachers as a reference site or even as a quiz review for students. The best part is discovering (or rediscovering) the names for those devices that are used less often, but students often ask about. This list would also work as an addition to AP literary terms that many English teachers give their AP students. Consider having your students create an ongoing class glossary wiki of literary devices with examples from your own literature study during the year. It includes topic sentences, topics and comments, support statements, transitions, and organization. It is appropriate for any level of student who still needs help with the basic principle of writing a paragraph. The presentation is "plain vanilla" but effective.

This site would make a nice accompaniment for students reading "The Diary of Ann Frank." This site includes exerpts from Anne's diary, lesson plans and downloadable readers' guides for teachers. Go directly to "Ann Frank: Life and Times" to access the excerpts from her diary and the scrapbook. This include pictures and artifacts along with a biography of Anne Frank suitable for middle school students.

A "scrapbook" section would be very effective on a projector or interactive whiteboard. The scrapbook might function as a good anticipatory activity to set up a unit on the diary, although it does give away the ending of the story. There is also a section for teachers which includes some downloadable handouts, a bibliography and other resources.If you are teaching about World War II, this would be a good resource to share on your teacher web pages for independent projects.

Posted by the New Hampshire Concord Monitor Newspaper in the Classroom program, this website offers many interactive ideas that students can use either with a physical newspaper in front of them, with an online news service such as CNN, or with online editions of newspapers that you find here. The examples used all refer to the New Hampshire newspaper, but are easily adaptable to whatever topic you want the students to deal with. This site includes such varied activities as creating a database and writing recipes. It covers every section of a newspaper. Students could create their own classroom newspaper using some of these activities or simply create journalistic articles based on whatever topic you are currently teaching. This is adaptable to almost any grade level and subject area.
In the Classroom
Whether you use hard-copy papers or electronic editions, many of these ideas will work even better using technology: word processing, wikis, blogs (for editorials), graphic organizer tools, digital cameras, etc. Use today's tools to study this powerful medium as it goes through transition into an electronic world. Presented by the Kennedy Center's Artsedge program, this site is a wonderful kaleidoscope of information about Harlem from 1917 through 1935. It explores the artists of that time, including writers, artists, actors, dancers, and musicians. Under Faces of the Harlem Renaissance there are categories for musicians, writers, actors, activists of the time such as W.E.B. DuBois and Charles Johnson, and more.
One of the nice things about this site is the easy access to the section they call "Classroom Activities." Scroll down to the bottom of any page to find it. Here they provide activities for grades 6-8 and 9-12 that are specific to grade level as well as links to lesson plans if you choose to use those. Under A Place Called Harlem, you will find the Media Player which still requires Flash, however there is so much information on this site that the media player will hardly be missed.

Because of the sheer variety of links offered, this is an ideal lesson to spread among a class. As a culminating activity have a "Harlem Day" where students present their information. They might dress and speak as the person they studied; they might present music, poetry, or art from that time, or even create a Harlem "nightclub" to share their information.Why not extend student learning and have them create video clips using Adobe Creative Cloud Express Video Maker, reviewed here, to share on your interactive whiteboard or projector via TeacherTube, reviewed here. Other project ideas could be a blog using Edublogs, reviewed here, written from the perspective of someone living in Harlem during the great depression, or a wiki written between one of the famous artists and the president at the time (Herbert Hoover, for example). A good wiki tool to use is PBWorks, reviewed here.

After establishing the characteristic of the genre, students work in groups to create their own menus that include fully detailed descriptions of a hypothetical restaurant and the foods served there. Includes downloadable materials and an interactive flip-book activity. Aligned to National Standards.

This is a great activity to use before a classroom party or celebration. Have students practice the descriptive writing in the lesson plan, and use it again to create a menu for their class party and the food they'll volunteer to bring. This would be a great way to make sure the party is academic in nature, and not a waste of time in administrator's eyes.

This is an amazing site with 12 notable poems that include a Quicktime video of the poem reading- either by the poet or an animated enactment (i.e. Emily Dickinson). Each of the lessons includes a broad spectrum of activities, lesson plans, and PDF worksheets. While you do have to register to fully access the material, it is free. Registration does require an email address (for teacher domains only: lesson plans, activities, etc..), so students do not need to register to view the videos.

If you are looking for something worthwhile as a quarter ending or are deeply involved in poetry, this site is great. Billy Collins reading "The Lanyard" is tough not to love and you can choose any of the included features to use or not. Because the site uses Quicktime, you have the option of replaying the video or pausing for discussion where you choose. Share the video on your interactive whiteboard or projector. This is wonderful as a class discussion. Another use for this site is to assign different poems to small groups of students and have them explicate them and then present them to the class. You could even shock the world of traditional English class or school video news announcements with a video "poetry break" during Poetry Month (April). Why not video the presentations and share them using a site such as Teachers.TV reviewed here.

This site was designed specifically for distance learning and writing instruction, but it contains anything an English teacher, or student of English could want. English as a second language resources, lesson plans, and helpful suggestions. Resources, lesson plans, and materials for writers and teachers. Also provides links to other sites for more information. Features online writing lab with one on one tutorials, and a grammar hotline, and hand-outs on. This site also has resources for teaching writing across curriculum for integrated teaching styles. This site is reviewed by Purdue English Department students and updated regularly.
In the Classroom
Use the handouts under the ESL heading as study guides for students trying to remember English conjugations. Have students practice the words with paper or online flashcards. If using an online tool, try Flashcard Stash, reviewed here.
