Are you producing a play that is in need of some accented English speech, or do you teach dialogue? This website offers accents/speech patterns from all over the world. In the "browse" section, you are able to click on an area of the world and hear a paragraph spoken from a native of that country,state, or region. The same paragraph is spoken in each example. The paragraph contains all of the needed vowel/consonant combinations, so that an interested student could easily compare and match a needed sound. You, too, can submit your own English accent recording to this site. It is a perfect site for those who desire some authenticity when it comes to learning about how different cultures speak the English language. Over 553 samples have been recorded for the site, and you can add one of your own. This site requires the Quicktime plug-in. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page
In the Classroom
Make this one available to the cast members of your school play or for in-class skits. You could also share some of the sound files as you study literature written in dialect to students can "hear" what it really sounds like. By listening to English accents all over the world, literature teachers may want to encourage authentic oral readings. Designed to capitalize on young students' interest in animals and pets, this is more a collection of "idea starters" than actual lessons. ASPCA offers basic ideas and templates; you'll want to add your own context in a Language Arts or Math lesson. The subject matter, though, is likely to keep students' attention.
In the Classroom
Use the classroom ideas in this class during a unit or lesson on persuasive speeches and writing. Animals are usually a soft spot for students, and animal care and cruelty may be an easy area to get students passionate enough to care about writing a good persuasive piece. Show students the information in any one of the packets, and have them write a persuasive speech or essay in partners about their topic. If having students write speech, take it to the next level and have students make podcasts of their speech. We recommend using a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here).
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Though the search interface is more complicated than necessary, this could be a rich resource for teachers working with Spanish-speaking or bilingual students.

Although this "solitaire" Scrabble game misses the group interaction of the traditional version, it provides a great opportunity for creative, independent thought related to spelling and vocabulary.

You may have to poke around a bit to find what you need, but this is definitely a resource to bookmark.

Try the "Hypothetically speaking" game as a way to teach students how and when to speak hypothetically in a fun, humorous way. Put students in cooperative learning groups that are mixed in levels of English comprehension. The resources include fiction, poetry, essays, and more; all are formatted in an easy-to-use on-screen display. Those who teach American literature will find this an interesting supplemental resource.
In the Classroom
Use the poems by Phyllis Wheatley to complement a lesson on supporters of the American Revolution. Wheatley is often a studied character in American History, and her poems often confront American Independence and slavery. Share the poems with students at the end of a lesson, and have them analyze as a class what she is trying to say about either subject.
