These two thought-provoking lesson plans challenge high school students to analyze relevant issues related to population growth and the depletion of oil reserves. Using math skills, students must calculate when oil reserves in various countries will run out, project the percentage of increase in world and U.S. oil demand between now and the year 2020, graph and analyze population data over a period of years for a city in Brazil, and participate in related discussion questions. Links to national standards are provided.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free and interactive lesson plans hosted on this site! This is a great way to incorporate various subjects in a history or government class to connect various principles and make it more interesting at the same time.

These fairly advanced puzzles - posted by two professors at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science - challenge students to construct and apply an algorithm or proof, or write a computer program to arrive at a solution. A new puzzle appears every few weeks, followed by a solution and related references.

In the Classroom

After sharing the site on your interactive whiteboard, add a link to this site on classroom computers for use as a center. As students try solving the puzzles, enhance learning by asking them to reflect upon their learning through blogs. edublogs, reviewed here, is a free blogging platform developed for classroom use. Modify learning by asking students to include screenshots of their work and discuss their problem-solving tips as they work through the different puzzles. Use a screenshot tool such as Awesome Screenshot, reviewed here.

This interactive is more than just an interactive game about fractions - it's a true brainteaser. Students must apply logic and spatial reasoning to find the 13 ways to divide an 8-piece square in half. This game also integrates lessons on rotation and flipping of shapes to challenge players to see all of the ways to create a half without repeating rotated or flipped squares.

In the Classroom

Include this activity as part of a math computer learning center. This interactive serves as an excellent opportunity to introduce fractions in a holistic way before delivering lessons or a complete unit on fractions. After completing the activity, ask students to draw different ways to create a half using Google Drawings, reviewed here. Save students drawings and add them to a collaborative class book using Book Creator, reviewed here. In addition to student digital drawings, include audio of student explanations of how to create a half, videos, and images taken by students to demonstrate how to create a half of different items.

Secondary students will appreciate this user-friendly bibliography helper. They still have to do the work of collecting all of the necessary information, but after entering it into the site, a citation with correct MLA format and punctuation is created for them. The citations can then be copied and pasted into a word processing document.

In the Classroom

Have a student demonstrate how to use this tool on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Share this link on your class web page for easy use any time students have a research project. Model ethical use of resources by using it yourself to cite sources on handouts, etc.

This site is for the curious student who wants to investigate how some of America's most enduring inventions from the 19th and 20th centuries came to be. Browse through pencil-and-ink industrial drawings of shopping carts, Crayola crayons, T-shirts, and more. A useful resource for gaining insight into American culture and the creative process.

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to compliment a lecture on the inventions of the 20th century. While the test is interesting, it might be a little much for a class for of lower-level readers. Include the images as a way to capture the simplicity of original designs, and compare the initial plans of these inventions to the mega-products they are today. The images are interesting, particularly the Crayola tests, and will capture kids attention as they are inventions that have impacted their own lives in a big way.
