Honor a famous mathematician each day of the year using this calendar that provides birth and death dates and biographical information. The site also includes birthplace maps that list mathematicians by country, a mathematics timeline, a section on the history of math, quotations by mathematicians, and information on math in various cultures.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it as a brain warmer for when students are walking into your classroom. Click on the "today" button and showcase each days findings on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Having to come in and read something on the board will get students quiet and ready for the math lesson for the day.

This site provides first year calculus students and teachers with a collection of helpful graphics illustrating a variety of important concepts including differentials and differences, Archimedes calculation of pi, the number e, secants and tangents, and much more. Each graphic is accompanied by an overview and description.

In the Classroom

Use your projector or whiteboard to go over the graphics and concepts on this Calculus site. Then extend and modify learning by asking students to choose a graphic to upload (with proper credit, of course) to Google Drawings, reviewed here, to demonstrate understanding of the concept, Google Drawings allows you to annotate an image with links to videos, text, websites, and more. Not familiar with Google Drawings? Watch an archived OK2Ask session to learn how to use: OK2Ask Google Drawings, here.

Don't know what to do with your data? Select from five different graphs and charts to create a visual representation of your data that meets your needs. Efficient organization provides an easy interface. Customize the design with the many available features after selecting your graph. Insert your data into the boxes provided and customize your labels. Preview your graph and go back to make changes. View your data in all five graph options to provide the best visual representation of your information. Tabs to provide help and examples for each menu item while creating your graph provide a great resource. Print your graph, download it in six different formats, or share it with a link sent to an email address. This tool tops the charts. Email not required, but needed to receive the URL for your graph if you select that option.

In the Classroom

After collecting data as a class create a graph together on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Switch between all five options to show the students how the same data can be represented in different visual formats. Which graph is the best graph to represent your data? Discuss how advertisers use graphs to influence consumers. Students can collect their own data to graph. Post graphs for students to view and analyze. Have cooperative learning groups write questions for peers to analyze their graph. Graph results from science experiments or student polls in any subject area. Create simple graphs for even the youngest students to practice reading data.

Test your students' knowledge of fractions, measurements, basic math skills, and logic in this interactive pouring game. Students must transfer liquid, empty and refill containers to achieve the correct volumes needed to win the game. Use as an independent math enrichment activity.

In the Classroom

Share the Can You Fill It? game on an interactive whiteboard or projector to demonstrate how to play, and then create a link to Can You Fill It? on classroom computers. Challenge students to begin playing without time limits. As they become more skilled, start using the clock and have them try to beat it. Have students take a screenshot of the game. Next, they can upload the screenshot image and add voice bubbles to explain what they learned. Use a tool such as Phrase.it, reviewed here. If you do not know how to convert a screenshot into an image file, take a picture of the screen using a digital camera, then upload the file to your computer. Be sure to share a link to the Can You Fill It? game on your class website or blog for play at home.

Students in second-year algebra and beyond can answer this pressing question in a lesson that introduces a mathematical model comparing the cost of education to potential earnings. Students are challenged to determine if the investment is a good one. The reality of real-life debt is encountered as students compute the amount that must be repaid each year for the life of the loan and check out starting salaries of target careers. A discussion component asks students to critique the model and discuss other factors that should be taken into consideration. This is a thought-provoking, authentic application of math skills

If you're looking for a resource that will engage reluctant readers or help new readers with unfamiliar vocabulary words, you may want to incorporate these fun and interactive stories into your classroom. Students can read through the interactive texts independently, click on troublesome words, and listen to their pronunciations. Select from movies, videos, and games that illustrate special sounds, pronunciations, and spelling rules.

In the Classroom

Use the movies to introduce the class to the alphabet. After working on letter sounds use the games and books during station time to reinforce letter sounds and spelling rules.

What can you do with infinity or pi? While most secondary math curricula are content to merely define them, there's more to the story. Here's a site that explains the efforts of Archimedes to identify and explain both terms. Math teachers with an eye toward history will no doubt find a way to integrate some of this material into an interesting class.

In the Classroom

Before using this site, you may want to assess what students know about infinity and pi. Put together an assessment asking about basic information using a tool like Vevox, reviewed here, where you can use a variety of formats including multiple choice, open-ended, star rated, and numeric Then choose a topic for students preview for words they don't know and create flashcards using Flashcard Stash, reviewed here, replacing paper and pen with a digital flashcard creator. Have students continue in this manner for other topics. After completion of the exercise, ask students to reflect on their learning using Flip, reviewed here. Flip allows students to share video responses through collaborative comments and discussions. Augument learning by requiriing students to comment on at least 3 other students learning reflections. Be sure you've coached students in proper discussion etiquette whether online or in class.
