Real life applications of math are explored through a collection of activities that engage student in learning about architecture. Skills involving estimation, measurement, proportion, and ratios combine as students draft a "to-scale" floor plan of their classroom. The site provides sample plans, instructions on using computer software to complete the activity, and a collection of links to other Web resources on architecture and mathematics. Related activities involve finding geometric shapes in buildings, designing a bedroom, and using a virtual 3-D model of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water home to estimate surface area and volume. This site offers previous problems for four different activity formats: quiz bowl, relay race, individual test, and team challenge. Choose the PDF for each activity to view past problems and responses.
In the Classroom
You don't need to be competing in a Math Challenge to use activities from this site! Use problems from the different activities for group assignments, homework, or extra credit. Create your own mini math challenge using problems on the site as a great back to school or last week lesson. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs to describe steps needed to solve different problems, Tumblr, reviewed here. Use problems from activities to provide enrichment to gifted and talented students.

This site offers many opportunities for math exploration for both teachers and students. Although they have a store and ads on the site, much of the site is free and worth a visit. One especially helpful portion of the site is the link to different types of calculators from basic to graphing to mortgage and loan calculators. Students and parents will find the homework section of the site helpful as it is categorized by different topics, then each topic is further divided into sections. For example, under fractions you will find definitions, reducing, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing. In each of those portions there is a section with a first glance (overview), in-depth, examples, and workout. There is also a unit quiz for each section. Another helpful area of the site is the practice section which offers practice in many different math skills such as square root, percent, and integers. The games section offers practice with critical thinking skills through logic puzzles and games such as chess.

Browse through playlists of topics including Fractions and Decimals, Algebra and Functions, and Number Sense. The videos are under 5 minutes, making them a quick and easy addition to any math classroom or study session. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If YouTube is blocked at your school, the videos may not be viewable.

MathDoku is a mathematical and logical puzzle based on "KenKen" and loosely similar to sudoku. Puzzles can be solved by combining the four main mathematical functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Difficulty levels of the puzzles can be chosen from random, easy, medium, or hard and hints can be accessed to help solve puzzles. Size of puzzles can also be chosen from 6X6, 8X8, or a printable version. This site does include some unobtrusive advertisements.

Mathebook.net has Online Tutorials as well as Downloadable pdf tutorials which you can save on a computer and use later. It can be used by teachers for home work purpose. The pdf is editable and students can e-mail the homework tutorials by e-mail back to teachers. To begin using the site, you simple choose from kindergarten, elementary, middle school, or high school levels. Within each of those sections is a list of topics, and then a choice of virtual or ebook. Virtual activities are those done on the computer and cannot be saved. These are items such as fact practice where feedback will be given as to the correctness of answers. eWorkbook items are PDF documents that can be printed and used as worksheets. You can either print and use them, or the answers can be inputted online, saved, then emailed to the instructor. The site also includes a math dictionary, video tutorials, and downloadable worksheets.

The site will be useful both for art instruction and for math or science study. We were delighted to find illustrations large enough to show the intricacies of these images. This site provides a wonderful chronology of mathematical information starting about 3000 BC on up to the 21st Century. Information can be accessed in several ways. Upon entering the site there is a timeline across the top and all information included is in list form on the main page, simply scroll through to view all items. Searches can be narrowed to defined time periods by mousing over that area on the timeline or typing dates into the blank box at the right of the timeline. There is also a link to a chronology index which leads to time periods already broken into smaller portions. Also available is a biographical index which can be used by time period, or choose female mathematicians or use the alphabetical index as an option.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a resource when studying different time periods in history to understand math concepts and famous mathematicians of the time. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to provide background on the development of math concepts over time. Share this site with students to use when researching mathematicians. This site provides countless books, films, plays, and television shows that all relate to specific math concepts. What a fabulous way to integrate math, language arts, history, and more! The site includes the title, year, and brief description. Teachers can browse by genre, medium, motif, and/or topic. Media include everything from comic books to plays to television series. Genres include historical fiction, children's literature, adventure/espionage, fantasy, science fiction, and more. Sixty-three fiction offerings are even available FREE (in their entirety) online! The site is still developing and frequently adds additional fiction titles. Students who enjoy fantasy will also enjoy choosing books from this site, since the author admits that not all math mentioned in all the books is "real" math!! The site allows teachers to search by keyword and also to browse new offerings in the compilation of titles.
In the Classroom
Use this site to find extra reading choices for reluctant readers who are interested in technology and math. Use it also to show students that math processes are inherent in a lot of life's experiences. Search the site for your current math topics. Share this link on your class website for students (and parents) to use at home. Share it with your school librarian for a featured reading shelf. This site offers several galleries of mathematical art sorted by different contributors. Included are Algorithmic Artwork, Fractal Art, Origami, and more. After choosing a gallery, all contributions are listed along with a thumbnail view and short description. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image including information from the artist. Galleries can also be viewed in slideshow format by double clicking the first image and following the arrows above the image or choosing the slideshow icon above the image. Files can even be sent as e-cards.
In the Classroom
Show galleries on your interactive whiteboard or projector and discuss mathematical properties used within images. Allow students to explore the site then create their own mathematical art along with a short journal about their creation. Be sure to take a picture of their art. Some of the explanations tend to get complicated and may be overwhelming; however, they may be useful as a starting point for classroom conversations when introducing or reviewing topics. Gifted students may appreciate this site as a way to receive more in-depth information on common math topics.

Use this site to find a quote of the week for your math classroom. Ask students to respond with their own thoughts. Begin each new unit with an appropriate quotation to spark classroom discussion and determine prior knowledge. Hang the quote on your wall throughout the unit. Use the list as examples of mathematical quotes and challenge students to create their own quote. Then ask them to create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced) using a tool such as Blabberize, reviewed here. Along with each symbol, learn how to say it, what it means, see an example, and view a search topic. For further information, use the URL given in the first paragraph (second line) and search box provided there to search the main Math Centre site. This site was created in the United Kingdom. If you speak American English, you may notice some slight spelling differences.
In the Classroom
Print and enlarge the leaflet to poster size to hang on classroom walls. Provide students with a copy of the leaflet to include in math notebooks or journals. Create a link to the leaflet on your class blog or website for easy reference.

Despite its awkward subtitles, this site offers concise, amply illustrated presentations on algebra, trigonometry, and other branches of mathematics. Teachers may find this site useful when they need a perspective that's different from their usual text. Students can use the information in the same manner, as another explanation when they're stumped by the textbook, although there's no real search feature. Well worth a look.

The Mathematics Assessment Project aims to bring life to the Common Core Standards by offering assessments for use in middle school and high school classrooms. Assessments are both summative tests or tasks and classroom performance based. Classroom research and feedback led to the development of all tasks. Choose from complete lessons including Common Core standards goals, print-outs as needed, and directions. Also included are tasks separated by middle school or high school level and high school tests for college readiness. There is an excellent professional development portion on the site for incorporating activity based learning in classrooms along with videos, session guides, and handouts. Download modules as needed for offline use. Find a step by step overview of how to use the site at the instructions tab at the top of each page.
