Stay up to date with the latest information for working, at school or home, using the information found online at the New York Times. Resources include weekly quizzes, writing prompts, interactive graphs, and much more. Suggested prompts employ information found on the front page of the newspaper as the starting point for KWL (what you know, want to know, what you learned) charts, and exploration of graphs and charts. Additional activities include questions that promote critical thinking and debate, along with links to resources to use within these debates.
In the Classroom
Be sure to bookmark this site as an important resource for lessons about the coronavirus and also as a resource for implementing online teaching activities. Incorporate ideas and activities found on this site into a blended learning system such as ActivelyLearn, reviewed here or Curipod, reviewed here. Both of these sites include features to create remote lessons with text, videos, and quizzes and provide educators instant feedback on student understanding. As students develop an understanding of the effects and makeup of the coronavirus, use Annotely, reviewed here, to upload and label an image sharing their knowledge. For example, have younger students upload a picture of their home, then label different surfaces with a short sentence on how they can spread or receive germs. For older students, ask them to use Annotely to label the different areas found in the community that leads to the spread of disease.

Whiteboard.fi is a temporary whiteboard tool created specifically for educators and for classroom use. Free accounts offer you the ability to create and use a whiteboard and the accompanying tools without registration. Temporary rooms are deleted following two hours of inactivity. Choose the option to start a new class and follow the steps to begin a session. Options allow you to create a waiting room where students have to be allowed into the whiteboard area and include a save mode that adapts for participants with limited internet strength. Once the room is created, share the URL or QR Code with students. The whiteboard tools include text, drawing, images, and more. When finished, use the included options to save your whiteboard as an image file or PDF document.
In the Classroom
Use Whiteboard.fi to collaborate with students to share and organize information instantly. Use the whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space as groups (or the class) share ideas for a major project or solve a real-world problem. Use this site in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the setting in a story as it is read aloud. As an assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, have a blended classroom, or are distance teaching, use this whiteboard tool to view students' whiteboards in real-time. For example, if you study weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and what happens during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Auto Classmate shares several free tools for educators that use artificial intelligence (AI) to create engaging activities and lesson ideas. Look for the Free Tools or Freemium icon for free resources Auto Classmate offers. These include an AI-powered lesson plan generator, an activity generator, a would you rather question generator, and a lesson plan and activity forecasting tool, with additional tools being added often. After selecting a tool, input the information in the prompts, such as grade level, content, and options for output. Some tools require registration; others do not. After responding, Auto Classmate offers options to remix for additional suggestions, download the information as a PDF, and provide ideas on how to use the AI responses.
In the Classroom
Think of Auto Classmate as your virtual teaching library. Use the free tools to create questions that require students to debate different viewpoints, find ideas for exit tickets, and find ideas for engaging activities for any subject. After selecting ideas provided by Auto Classmate, use a virtual whiteboard tool such as Figjam, reviewed here, or Whiteboard.chat, reviewed here to record students' responses and extend learning.

Find out instantly if the problem you are having opening a web site is YOUR problem or a website that is down. Is It Down Right Now (iidrn.com for short) instantly "pings" a site so you can tell whether the site is down for everyone or just for you (perhaps due to a glitch with your Internet provider). The Internet is never a sure thing, but this tool tells you whether it's just YOU having trouble. Although it sounds geeky, it's easy. Copy/paste or type the URL you are trying to reach into the box at top right, and click "Check." The results tell you how long it takes for the site to respond and how long it has been down (if it is). What a handy tool for ANYONE using the web! What this tool will not tell you is if you are mistyping the URL, so always double check.

In the Classroom
Mark this one in your Favorites and remind your student to use it before they call out, "The page isn't opening!" in the middle of class. Make it one of the required tools as part of "ask three before me." If you have a class web page, this is a handy way to find out if your web page service (or district-provided web page server) is having trouble "serving up" the class page. Tell savvy students who are unable to access web sites to use this tool and take a screen shot of the results if a site assigned for homework is "down" for prolonged periods. Quickly create math practice questions that provide instant feedback with helpful explanations using Edia. Edia's database includes an extensive list of questions to use. First, select questions, add time limits, due dates, and more. After assigning questions to groups of students, Edia rearranges the question order for each student to prevent sharing answers. Also, this site includes a unique background that prevents students from using the PhotoMath app to read and answer questions. After creating an account, begin by selecting to create a quiz or practice. Next, create a class or import students from Google Classroom. Continue by personalizing options, including the post date, due date, and allowing late submissions. Next, choose the "Add question" link to find and add questions, continue until a sufficient number of questions are included. Choose "Post Now" to create a shareable link to provide to students. Students sign in using a Google account or create an email and password account.
In the Classroom
Use Edia to create, share, and differentiate math practice questions with students. Create practice sheets for students on the fly as you assess understanding of concepts or review previously learned material. If parents ask for additional support for their students, create individual practice on the necessary skills. Some of Edia's explanations may take a different approach than methods taught in your classroom, use this to your advantage and ask students to share different methods for approaching problems. Ask students to share their approaches using a screen recording tool such as Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here.

Organize thoughts, create mind maps, and brainstorm ideas using Spider Scribe mapping tools built with drag-and-drop technology. Free accounts for individual use offer unlimited public maps, three private maps, and storage of images and files of up to 3MB. Begin by creating a personal account with your email address and password. Next, take advantage of the demo to learn how to add and edit items using your dashboard. When ready, create a new mind map or folder by clicking the blue plus button. Next, add text, images, a calendar, maps, and files. When finished, use the share link to copy the URL, print it, or export it as an image file.
In the Classroom
Use SpiderScribe to create chapter or story maps as a collaborative project, or work together as a class to create a story map on your interactive whiteboard. Use this tool for literature activities, research projects, social studies, or science topics. Use this to create family trees or food pyramids in family and consumer science. Have students collaborate (online) to create group mind maps or review charts before tests on a given subject. Have students organize any concepts they study. They can color code concepts to show what they understand, wonder about, and question. Enhance student learning using SpiderScribe and ask students to demonstrate a step-by-step process, such as the life cycle of a butterfly. View advice for use as a parent or teacher on the first page. Be sure to scroll down to the two last pages providing an excellent overview of the big picture of teaching math and general tips for parents.

Take timed practice challenges within age groups starting at 6-8 years old and moving up to 16-18. View the directions to understand scoring rules and timing.

Find problems to share with your classroom to use in math centers or as homework. Ask students to create a Google spreadsheet to track their attempts at completing challenges and their results.
