Also, find emoticons for social media and email at the bottom of the page. Click on any of the social media links at the top to easily share your countdown. Download the program to begin.

In the Classroom

There are many uses for this practical online tool. At the beginning of the school year, display on your interactive whiteboard or projector to time or count down any classroom activity. This will get the students in the habit of checking how much time they have left. Project the Stopwatch or Timer while students take a test, solve a drag and drop, practice speeches, rotate between learning centers, or join cooperative learning groups. When rotating between centers or taking turns in a cooperative learning group, schedule the time sequence to keep everyone on track. Use the Date Countdown to share days until any important event via social media. Share this tool on your class website for students to use at home (to practice taking timed math practice tests, practice for a speech, and more).

Follow five easy steps to create personalized pictograms using the built-in features of this pictogram maker. First, start from scratch or use one of the premade templates and customize your information and design elements. The drag and drop features make it easy for participants to add and change content. After creating an account, begin with a blank template or choose from premade templates, including customer surveys, weather forecasts, and most popular social media channels. After selecting a template, use the dashboard features to change fonts, colors, graphics, data, and more. When complete, share your pictograph using the URL created upon publication, embed it onto a website using the embed code, or download it as a JPG or PNG image file. Visme's Pictogram Maker also offers the option of adding collaborators. Use the collaborator option to share as a view-only image, comment, or add editors.

In the Classroom

Use this pictogram creator to create engaging graphics that bring information to life. Examples are sharing a death count by states during the Civil War, student surveys of favorite books, or salary comparisons of different career paths. Ask students to create pictograms to accompany presentations and research projects. These pictogram templates are perfect for sharing data for science fair projects. Add images or embed pictograms into presentations created with Sway, reviewed here, or in video presentations created using Animoto, reviewed here.

This site offers a list of short stories for ESL/ELL learners. Students can read the story, listen to the story, review the story, click on vocabulary words to access an online dictionary, and more. There is also a link to an online dictionary for other new words not featured in the vocabulary section at the top of the page. Many of the stories offer two listening speeds (slow and normal). Although the advertisements are a bit distracting, this website does offer a high number of ESL/ELL stories on a variety of topics. The subject matter of many stories is not appropriate for younger students. Preview!

In the Classroom

The reading and listening activities are easy for students to work on independently because of the listening option. Special ed teachers may also have students who will benefit from the listening practice. Don't forget to provide the headphones. Provide this link on your class website or newsletter, so the families of ENL/ELL students can read (or listen) to the stories together.

YouTube is a fantastic resource, but using YouTube videos in the classroom can be difficult in various situations. Make it easier by converting any YouTube video to a downloadable MP3 file to play directly from your device. Paste the link to your video and click the link to begin the download. The footage quickly converts into an MP3 file that is ready to download and use. This site also works as a resource for downloading music, entering a song's name, and searching. Download the results to your device as a music or audio file after choosing the desired selection.

In the Classroom

Avoid problems with low bandwidth or filters that block YouTube by using this site to solve many of your classroom video issues. After downloading videos, share them with students in presentations created with multimedia tools like Sway, reviewed here or upload to your Google Classroom as part of assigned activity. Add additional resources such as links and quizzes, then share as a blended learning activity. This should primarily be a teacher resource. If using with students, discuss appropriate and inappropriate uses of the technology as well as choosing necessary videos.

Introducing fridge magnets on the web! This interesting site could provide great creative writing entertainment and engaging grammar for students. The site provides a variety of words, on magnet-looking pieces, that the students can manipulate to create their own stories or poems. Younger students may need assistance with some of the more difficult vocabulary words. The actual "magnets" appear in a new window and require Java. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..

In the Classroom

This site would be great on individual classroom computers or a cluster or as a whole class grammar or figures of speech lesson on interactive whiteboard. Another idea: Have students create a story related to a current classroom topic or skill. Have students submit their creations to share on the site by submitting a screen "dump" (also known as a screen shot). Use the PrtSc key to "copy" your screen and PASTE it into a document for submission. We recommend making the submission anonymous or using the class as the name.
