Convert your text into audio spoken by your favorite characters using FakeYou; no registration is required. Choose from many options to select a voice; options include celebrities, cartoon characters, foreign language accents, and more. After choosing a voice, type your text into the box and click "Speak." Scroll down to find the results. Use the play button to listen to the results and follow the link to download the WAV file. Audio is computer-generated, so it may not be an exact duplicate of the chosen voice; however, the representations are close and are helpful for several different uses.
In the Classroom
Create and use audio recordings from FakeYou in several different ways in the classroom. For example, convert a short student-written speech into an audio recording featuring a well-known politician's voice, such as Barack Obama or Franklin Roosevelt. In addition, FakeYou offers many voices making it an excellent option to use when writing biographies to add audio to multimedia presentations. From the little known to the very famous, these people all have something in common: they have all made significant contributions to American history. Though far from complete, the list has hundreds of names (listed alphabetically by their first names) and a wealth of categories from sports, singers, actors, writers, activists, scientists, politicians, and everything in between. Every person has a picture and a biography. In the Classroom
This is an excellent site to use as part of a biography unit to match biographies to individual student interests. Allow students to choose a category. Have them read several biographies from that category, then research an African American that hasn't been included on this site. Have students use these biographies as a model to write about the person they researched. Instead of using paper and pen to write down information, ask students to use Google Docs or Microsoft Word to begin research. Using these online documents affords many benefits, including the ability to add comments, highlight information, and add links to online information. Once research is underway, suggest that students use a bookmarking tool like Raindrop.io, reviewed here, to organize information. Raindrop.io includes the ability to add notes to bookmarks, making it easy for students to label and add information for later use. As a final project and to extend student learning, ask students to create their own book using OurBoox, reviewed here, that includes images, videos, and text. If famous people from long ago had inboxes, what would be in them? Famous Inboxes takes that concept and creates inboxes for characters in literature, entertainment, and history. Choose from artists, musicians, great leaders, authors, and many more categories. Each inbox contains a screenshot of the person's email (mythical) inbox including the subject of the email and the sender. This is an entertaining and provocative site sure to inspire lots of ideas for your own use! Be sure to preview before you share as some of the topics (or "texting" language) may not be appropriate for the classroom.
In the Classroom
Share Famous Inboxes with your students on your interactive whiteboard or projector using a character or author studied in class. Assign students to each of the inbox titles and have them write the actual email sent. Don't see anyone to use in class? Create your own or have students use the site as a model to create their own. Most likely, working in groups will get the creative juices flowing. This would be a great model to use for introducing a history or science unit or for looking at the relationships between characters in literature. Have students write the emails as an end of unit review. Subscribe to the RSS feed of this site to receive updated contents. Use the option to create an inbox as a differentiated challenge for your gifted students. For example: Summarize World War II by showing Winston Churchill's inbox, then write two of the key emails. As a "hook" for new books in the media center, have students create inboxes for one of the characters and post them with the book jackets. This collection of over 150 lessons provides biographies and profiles of well known personalities for ENL/ELL (and other) students. The famous people range from 50 Cent to Walt Disney. Scroll through the list of names. The main page shows each person's profession (or claim to fame), nationality, birthdate and date of death (when appropriate). Choose a name to go to the lesson. Lessons include a short biography (7-8th grade level reading) and activities to accompany it. Examples of activities include synonym match, cloze activities, spelling, and discussion questions.

In the Classroom
The reading level of this site is rather challenging. Have weaker readers work together with stronger ones. While discussing scientists and inventors, use this site as a resource for gathering information. Have small groups of students research scientists from the same time period. Have them research their contributions including reactions of others to their discovery or invention. Research why these inventions were particularly important and the scientific knowledge that changed as a result. Have them present their findings to the class by creating a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Some tool suggestions are (click on the tool name to access the review): Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, Vevox, Animatron, Renderforest, and Microsoft PowerPoint Online. Then, if you would like to take your students critical thinking up a notch and extend their learning, you could have the small groups compare the different inventions and decide how and why the earlier inventions had to come before a later invention could be developed. Read and vote for your favorites or even write your own. Whether you are a fan of fiction or like to dabble with writing, take a look at FanFiction. Fanfiction authors write new stories about characters from their favorite books (movies, TV series, etc.). Read to your heart's content and leave a comment without even signing in. To create and submit your own writing you need to sign up with an email. Click on the genre of your choice to get started! This site can be accessed in a variety of languages. Click the small "mobile forum" icon at the top to use on mobile iOs or Android devices.

It is amazing how students will polish their writing for an authentic audience! Demonstrate how to use FanFiction with your projector or interactive whiteboard. Show students the different genres and have them read a selection or two from an amateur writer to see how it works. Have student pairs or trios work together on a piece for a favorite book. There is also a miscellaneous category you could use to have students add a different ending or write from a different point of view based on any short story you use in class. They can also submit in the poetry category. Use 121 Writing reviewed here to proof student writing and make suggestions (verbally if your choose to) before they submit to FanFiction. For students to develop and polish their writing skills, use a program such as Slick Write reviewed here. Create a FanFiction account with a class email and have students work on their piece using a nickname or acronym. Feedspot is a tool for gathering, reading and sharing all the interesting blogs and websites you read on the web. Simply sign up (email required) and import information from other feed readers or start new. Add the url of any RSS feed to include it in your stream. Click the little RSS feed icon on any blog or site that has regular updates. Once added to Feedspot, read feeds by clicking the title in your main window or search for new feeds using the "You Might Like" box. Share using links provided to social networking sites or use tags and folders to organize information. Be sure to read the "Getting Started" link for useful tips in using Feedspot. This is an excellent alternative for users of Google Reader (now shut down).

Create a class Feedspot account to follow blogs of interesting teachers, schools, authors, or museums and zoos. If your students write blogs, add student accounts to Feedspot for easy viewing of all their posts. Felt is a free map creator that makes it easy for anyone to create and work with maps. Under the Use Cases tab on the top right, you'll find Education with ideas for teaching with Felt. Easily share your maps with others by sharing a link or embedding them in another tool. Felt's simple toolbar makes it easy to map data or routes and add notes, links, or images. Pinning locations, adding notes, coloring specific areas, clipping out any location to emphasize, and adding layers to your maps allows you to map just about anything you could imagine! You must be at least thirteen years old to create a free account to create maps. This site is currently in a public beta version.

Visualizing data and creating maps just became easier for teachers and students. Help your students understand current events worldwide by creating a map and embedding it on your classroom website or learning management system. For example, use maps in science to track migration patterns, explore climates, or map weather events. Just upload your picture (or any image) using the photo link at the bottom of the page. Images can be moved around within the picture frame, and there is an option to adjust the image size by zooming in or out. Save the edited image by right-clicking the image and selecting "save" to download the output image to your computer. Then print the dollar bill with your image. The site offers currency from many different countries from Antarctica to Yugoslavia, and you can create posters, decks of cards, and more.

FigJam is an online collaborative whiteboard with many built-in versatile tools for classroom use. The whiteboard offers infinite space to add templates, drawings, and areas for conversations and projects. In addition, interactive elements allow members to react to ideas with emojis, high-fives, and stamps. Create an account to begin using FigJam and access all of its features. Create your FigJam board by selecting the purple "+FigJam Board" link near the top of the home page. Add features to your whiteboard by choosing from the many options available, including drawing and writing tools, a timer, and an AI generator to create items such as timelines and mindmaps. Share your FigJam board with others by copying the link, sending an email, or copying the embed code onto a webpage.

Use FigJam in many different ways to engage learners and support classroom instruction. Google Jamboard, reviewed here is a similar but less robust tool than FigJam and will not be supported after December 31, 2024. Migrate your current Jamboards into FigJam. This link will take you to the directions for importing your Jamboards to FigJam. When working in FigJam, use sticky notes as a collaborative activity to brainstorm ideas and information as a class. Use the drawing tools and ask students to label places, parts of plants, and more. Use FigJam templates to create all-about-me activities, such as class check-in and exit ticket activities, Frayer Model activities, and much more. Figma is a collaborative, online design tool that allows members to create websites, applications, logos, and more. One beneficial resource included in Figma is Figjam, an online collaborative whiteboard. Figjam features include a built-in chat, auto-layout, and features that allow you to create visually appealing and interactive presentations. Create a free account and log in to your account to explore the Figma community to find inspiration that includes files, templates, plugins, and widgets. Use the filters to narrow down searches to include free items to make browsing more productive. Share Figma and Figjam creations with others using a link or embed code. The free plan includes three Figma and three Figjam files; however, educators can upgrade to the professional program for free. Professional plans include what is available under the free plan and unlimited Figjam files for free, team libraries, and audio libraries. FYI - In October of 2024 Google Jamboard will sunset (close down). The good news is Figjam will have a tool to convert Jamboards to Figjam.

This site allows teachers and students to go through four simple steps to find a book that has a lexile rating. The steps include entering a lexile range (if unknown: enter grade level and ease of reading), interests (similar to a keyword search), search of all items that come up, and list-making.
One disadvantage of the site is that you can only enter a keyword when you get to the third step. After a book list based on interests appears, then you can search by keyword to make the search zero in on specifics. When teachers or students select books for a reading list, they can then click to see the complete list of books they have selected. Clicking on a book title leads to another screen, but it does not contain a book summary; instead, it has a list of other keywords for the book along with other book data.

This site is great for teachers searching for books at specific lexile levels. Learning support and ESL/ELL teachers can find books to accompany units in content area classes but on the correct lexile level. Students can also use the site by entering their grade levels and what kind of readers they are. Use this site to differentiate the learning experience for all levels of students. Rather than having students complete traditional book reports, why not have them complete a multimedia project? Students are often in a quandary about finding words in a dictionary they do not know how to spell. Share this video and they will enjoy the humorous banter between two friends while learning to find a word they cannot spell. One needs to find a word he cannot spell, and the other gives several demonstrations of just how to use the dictionary without knowing the exact spelling for a word. Although TV411 was originally created for adult English Language students, this video could be useful in any secondary English classroom.

Use this video as an introduction to dictionary skills. ESL/ELL students will benefit from this introduction to puzzling spelling and the use of phonetics, as well. FindIcons.com is a search tool that helps you find free icons. Type your term in the search bar to view icons in FindIcons database. Choose from several different options to download icons in the file format desired, such as png. Convert to jpg, bmp, or several other file options. Each icon includes licensing information so you can look for icons that are Creative Commons or public domain. Create an account then make user sets of your favorite icons. Access your user sets from anywhere through the FindIcons website. Explore the TAGS button to find search ideas. Be aware: ANY word/term can be searched, some may not be appropriate for the classroom. If you plan to allow young people to use this site independently, be sure to discuss appropriate searching.

Automatically record, transcribe, and summarize meetings using Fireflies.ai. This tool uses AI resources to quickly view important information from meetings, such as action tasks, questions, and key topics discussed. Create an account and allow Fireflies.ai access to your calendar and select options for access to scheduled web-conference events. Fireflies.ai includes access to meetings conducted via Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, and other major conferencing platforms. Following each recorded meeting, memberss receive an email with a recording, transcript, and AI-generated summary.
In the Classroom
Use Fireflies.ai to record and review any web-based meeting such as parent/teacher conferences and staff presentations. After conferences, use the summarizing tool to share and confirm discussions of goals for students and verify individual responses for next steps.
