Native American cultures offer wonderful examples of oral traditions and storytelling. This site from PBS provides examples of these, a look at some common story themes, and audio files with a number of different stories. Try using this one in a study of Native Americans or as part of a unit on stories from different cultures. Although this site is slightly dated, and some of the audio files are not updated, the content of this site remains relevant and useful to many classes; there is a lot of good information here.

In the Classroom

Use the educators guide to find ways to incorporate this site into your classroom, either through lesson plans or classroom activities. This would be a very useful site for a US history or English teacher, studying Native American Culture and story-telling.

The American Foundation for the Blind has created Braille Bug to explain Braille - what it is and how it works - to the sighted world. This site would be a great introduction for students who have family, friends, or classmates who are blind. There's a very complete introduction to the Braille alphabet, along with a printable Braille letter guide.

In the Classroom

This would also be a great stop in a study of disabilities and adaptive strategies.

This nationally published news source makes for an excellent resource for a teacher or student looking for current events. There's information ranging from politics, global news, business, technology - even pop culture. This would be useful in any classroom where a knowledge of the now was focused on.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for current events projects - assign students various weeks through out the semester in which they are to be the class news reporter, keeping their peers up to date and informed. Have students research whats going on via this news site, and present a small presentation at the beginning of class every day during their week. Students can either orally present, or for the technologically inclined, create a short video summarizing the same information. Have students create news briefs and share them using a tool such as SchoolTube reviewed here.

This site from the University of Illinois offers biographical and critical information on several dozen modern American poets. It could be useful for teachers seeking something new and different to inspire a class, or for student research work. A thorough preview is probably in order before suggesting this site for use by students.

In the Classroom

Post the site on the class web page as a resource for students working on a research paper, allowing them to access it both in and out of the classroom. The biographies provided would be an excellent resource, as would some of the poems that accompany them.
