The Source for Learning offers this model for elementary (or middle) schools to build skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening systematically in a schoolwide model including students, teachers, and parents. The free Web 2.0 tools suggested here are by no means the only tools that might work. These exemplary tools were chosen by the TeachersFirst Editors for ease of use and versatility in classroom and home use and could easily be implemented at grade levels other than those suggested here. As students and teachers master a new tool at each grade level, they develop rich literacy skills and vital technology skills, all in the context of reading, writing, speaking and listening across the curriculum.

These six activity collections from the Smithsonian Center provide engaging, hands-on activities for integrating technology and developing STEAM skills. Activities include creating a 3-D insect model, a trading card game for discovering patterns and connections, and creating wearable tech. Each activity includes a complete lesson plan along with additional ideas for extending learning and reinforcing content. Choose any collection to view resources and download the PDF lesson plan.
In the Classroom
Save activities from this site to use as hands-on STEAM lessons throughout the year. Introduce the Smithsonian collection resources on an interactive whiteboard or projector and explore the included items together. Flip your classroom and include a link to museum resources for students to explore before your lessons, and have them create online stickies sharing their thoughts on collection pieces using lino, reviewed here. Instead of having students complete written responses during your lesson, ask them to respond to questions using a video response tool like Flip, reviewed here. Flip offers users the opportunity to submit video responses to questions and add comments to other users' responses. At the end of your STEAM activities ask students to create a multimedia presentation sharing their activities and reflecting upon learning opportunities provided. Use bulb as a portfolio tool to showcase your work, share ideas, and ask for feedback. Sign up with your Google, Microsoft, or Clever account or enter your email. With a free account you get all of the standard features, and can choose to publish ten portfolio pages and upload up to 2GB of content. After creating your account, click to take a tour, then in 140 characters tell members who you are, create a cover image (optional), and then choose to create a page or a collection (multiple pages). You can also create groups (with or without Google), and lots more. Click symbols at the top right of your name to get help, search, create pages or collections, and more. On the home page in the top menu bar, look at projects students and teachers have created. bulb is easy to use due to its drag and drop interface. Besides creating text, you can embed images and videos, and integrate with your Google Drive. bulb offers educators a special account that integrates your LMS, has a teacher dashboard, and dedicated manager and tech support for a very minimal fee per year.

In the Classroom
Use bulb for student portfolios in any subject. Set up an account with your teacher name, email, password, and some basic information. Once you and your students' accounts are set up, share how to get around bulb on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector to get students started. When you (or your students) create group pages, anyone you invite can publish to the group. However, students will also have their own account and can keep pages private. Science teachers could have students write up their lab reports in a portfolio, and history teachers could set up portfolios for student report writing. Have teens and older students upload work throughout the year to create their own "me-portfolios." Create portfolios (with permission) to share younger students' work with parents and students during conferences. Use this tool to show finished projects or to show changes in a project from start to finish. Make a work prototype site and upload examples of exemplary work to share with students to set expectations for completed products before beginning a project. Create a link to this tool on your class website for students to share projects and information. (Get parent permission before posting students' work!) Have students take ownership of their own portfolios to show progress and products across several years. Have older students build portfolios to share as part of career and college preparation. TeachersFirst provides this collection of printable quotations, ready for your classroom or bulletin board. Inspire, engage, or challenge your students to think with quotes from famous leaders, sports figures, thinkers, and writers.
In the Classroom
They look great printed on brightly colored paper! As an opening day activity, challenge small groups of students to interpret the quote hanging closest to them and predict how it may be important in your course this year. For younger students, ask them to write a paraphrase or to illustrate the quote. Be sure to change the quotes periodically and give a prize to the first student who notices. Or give a pop-quiz during the last week of school, asking students to recall as many of the year's quotes as they can (working in small groups will probably help). If you have classroom blogs, ask students to choose and reflect on a specific quote and its relevance to your class throughout the past year.

With the use of familiar characters from the Arthur book and television series this science interactive will help young students understand what allergens can trigger an asthma attack. Students must capture allergens that can trigger an asthma attack. If they catch enough allergens then the the throat will close up and the game is over. Before each new "capture challenge" there is a short informational talk from Buster Baxter about the specific allergen.
In the Classroom
Use this activity as part of a health or science lesson. Use as an introduction to a discussion about asthma. Introduce the site on an interactive whiteboard or projector and then have students try out the game on individual computers, or as a learning center. After learning some facts about asthma, have students create bookmarks with one fact that they learned. Alternatively, replace the paper bookmark with a simple poster using a tool such as Magazine Cover Maker, reviewed here. But Why? Kids have lots of questions, and this podcast is all about answering them. Some of the diverse questions answered at the time of this review were - Why Do We Poop and Fart? Why Don't Spiders Get Stuck in Their Webs? Why Do We Celebrate Halloween? Why Do People Get Cancer? Kids are encouraged to send in an audio of their questions through an adult to get it answered. Most podcasts run in length between 20 and 30 minutes, and many will recommend additional resources about the topic. Don't have the time to listen to a podcast? Not to worry, there is a summary right under the audio.

Listen to several podcasts together as a class. Enhance learning by challenging students to reflect on their learning and what they would like to learn more about using a tool such as Flip, reviewed here. Download the Ipix plugin to take the virtual tour of the exhibit, check out the live butterfly webcam, or view quicktime movies of butterflies in action. This is a great online excursion for students who don't have their own butterflies to observe. The videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

[Unfortunately, a couple of the lesson ideas are now dead links, but the remaining ones are good.] The lesson plans are user-friendly and geared toward primary grades. You can also obtain information on applying for grants to create a butterfly garden at your school. That would make a fantastic Earth Day project for a classroom or entire school to promote team work.

In the Classroom
Even if you aren't ready to create podcasts, share the How To Start a Podcast page with your students with excellent tips for creating any type of speaking presentation, create regular or special podcasts to share on your class web page or wiki to read/listen to in class AND from home, adding a touch of blended learning to your classroom! Have readers (perhaps older buddies) enhance their learning by building fluency and recording selected passages for your non-readers. Don't forget to have them listen and critique their podcast! Launch a service project for your fifth or sixth graders to record stories for the kindergarten to use in their reading and listening center. Have students create "you are there" recordings as "eyewitnesses" to historical or current events. Make a weekly class podcast, with students taking turns writing and sharing the "Class News." Have students create radio advertisements for concepts studied in class (Buy Dynamic DNA!). Have students write and record their own stories or poetry in dramatic readings. Language students or beginning readers could record their fluency by reading passages and listening to themselves. Allow parents to hear their child's progress reading aloud, etc. Compare world language, speech articulation, or reading fluency at two points during the year. Have your Shakespeare students record a soliloquy. Write and record a poem for Father's or Mother's Day (or other special events) and send the URL as a gift to that special person. If you have gifted students who lean toward the dramatic, this tool is simple enough for them to create dramatic mini casts without needing a video camera.Edge Features:

The presenters include well-known celebrities as well as "typical" students. Sign up for the weekly newsletter that includes a simple transformative task to complete each week along with other helpful tips and videos. Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to talk to your class about bullying with these videos. Use this discussion to prompt a journal entry, skit, or other personal response on the topic of bullying and how to handle it. Exchange pencil and paper and use a blogging tool like edublog, reviewed here. Provide this link for parents to view at home with their students. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create their own videos addressing bullying issues. Replace paper and start with Story Map, reviewed here, for students to plan their skit. Share the skits on a site such as SchoolTube, reviewed here. Download C-Stem Studio as part of your ongoing STEM and coding instruction. Be sure to follow directions on downloading the correct version and order of downloads. Share activities on your interactive whiteboard or projector, then have students create and explore on their own. After school clubs and activities can use this program to learn to code. Use this tool with gifted students for a great challenge. Set up a coding activity center for interested students when they finish class work or for rainy days and snow days. This site tells the story of the farm families that produce milk for a large cheese-making enterprise. Select a dot within one of the states on the map (New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts) and read the story of the family who lives at that location. Stories are text only, but they do have clear photographs of each family. You can then select another story by a family in the same state or go back to the original map and select another family's story anywhere. As you roll your mouse over the dot, the name of the family and the community where they live pop up. Ignore the advertising; the site content is worth it.

In social studies or government class have individual students or small groups design magazines for the candidate of their choice. Remember those travel brochures your world language students used to make with glue sticks and scissors? Try this online tool instead. World language students can also create an interactive magazine telling a story in their new language. In science class students can design a booklet to explain cells, life cycles, or any science topic. Instead of a book report, try a digital magazine. Do an author study via a digital magazine. Calendly is an appointment scheduling tool that syncs with your Google Calendar. Sign in with your Google login and set up scheduling pages with your availability preferences. Choose from several options for length of appointments. Next, describe your event and even add additional questions for invitees if desired. Advanced options allow for making events public, limiting the number of participants, and minimizing schedule notice time. You can add buffer time before and after appointments. Share the link with anyone needing to schedule an appointment with you. They simply visit your calendar to schedule an appointment, and it appears automatically on your calendar. Invitees receive a confirmation screen upon completion of scheduling that includes a link to add the event to their own calendar.
In the Classroom
Use Calendly to schedule parent or student conferences that meet mutual scheduling needs. Create events for professional development sessions. Have participants choose a time for attending or presenting at sessions. Share with your school's Parent Teacher Organization as an excellent scheduling tool for any event. In the Classroom

Calkoo is a great free tool to replace expensive graphing calculators that many students may not have. Calkoo works well on computers, mobile devices, and interactive whiteboards. Use this site during a unit on careers, economics, or financial literacy. Include it as part of a measurement unit. Share during Family and Consumer Science units to explore the cost of living and have students put together a mythical "budget" for living in their chosen career. Have students send you on a vacation and include calculations for the currency converter, fuel cost calculator, sales tax for souvenirs, and more! This is a great site to support many experiments in science. Calculate acceleration, velocity, and time, or use the mathematics category to complete problems. Use this tool in social studies class for quickly calculating years or months from important timelines or when figuring out geographical distances. In English or L.A. classes, quickly figure out the life span of authors or how long ago a story took place. In health or science classes, use the BMI calculator or get other accurate measurements.
