Use this site to learn about Cyrus Rowlett Smith, a pioneer aviator and patriarch of American Airlines. See this website, here, that offers a simple timeline of his life and accomplishments. The time line stretches from 1899 - 1990. There are graphics, historical and scientific information, information about World War II, and biographic information about C. R. Smith. The site and timeline are very simple to use and offer some little known information.

In the Classroom
Study the bald eagle and its current status as no longer endangered. Use as a research site for bald eagle information. Consider showing one of the videos from the YouTube channel for the American Eagle Foundation. If you do not wish to show all scenes in the video use a program like Clipchamp, reviewed here to show only the portions of the video you want your students to see. Look for an animal in your area, and research it. Do a Problem Based Learning Project on creating dioramas and information for creating public awareness. Create a festival to promote the preservation of the species. Have students create commercials and posters to meet speaking and listening standards. For online posters use a program like Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here. Create a public blog for an ongoing research watch using Webnode, reviewed here.

The site is easy to read and simple to navigate. Be sure to click on the Myths and Legends to see how the Bald Eagle has been viewed throughout history. Students with reading disabilities or low reading levels may need to some assistance with Native American verbiage.

You can browse the web-sites, activities, and experiments by sub-topic, grade level, or resource type. Current subtopics include anthropology, astronomy, biology, earth science, and paleontology. Special collection exhibits present theme-based activities that cover additional topics and change occasionally. Be sure to check out the the Past Exhibitions for topics such as Biodiversity, Antarctica, and deep sea explorations, and much more. This is a great site for sorting out all the wonderful resources the museum has to offer. There are over 1,000 resources currently available on countless subjects.

The hour and a half long webcast presents information on plants, animals, and features of the rainforest. America's Rainforests also includes a variety of lesson plans aligned to science standards for teachers along with a student section with more information about this biome.

Include this site with your teaching materials on the rainforests. After learning about America's Rainforests, have students find and map rainforests around the world. Have students create maps sharing this information using Zeemaps, reviewed here. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose various locations on a map where they find rainforests. This site, part of the Annenberg Center's collection of web activities, offers a simple introduction to the physics involved in riding a roller coaster, and allows young experimenters to design their own roller coaster (friction-free, no less!) to see how it performs. Students could use this site easily.
In the Classroom
Have students or small groups of students design their own roller coaster with suggestions from this site; at the same time, they will learn about the physics involved in the roller coaster ride. Enhance learning by having students use Flip, to talk about what they learned about physics and then comment on what their peers learned, too. This very simple site, created by an anonymous puzzle-lover, is a treasury for logic problems and lateral thinking puzzles to use in your classroom or beyond. Click on the puzzle type you want. Use them as brain warm-ups in a math or science class before venturing into problem-solving or inquiry process or simply to engage the brains before starting any activity. There are different levels of logic and different types of lateral thinking puzzles, each with a hint before revealing the complete answer. These puzzles would also be useful for gifted enrichment.
In the Classroom
If you don't have time to spend on these in class as often as you would like, print out a single lateral thinking or logic problem each week for your bulletin board and let the students argue about it all week. Or include this link on your teacher website for the students to access outside of class. What did the earth look like 240 million years ago? 20 million years ago? When did the first land animals appear? What did our world look like with the Pangea supercontinent? This visualization of the earth shows viewers these answers and more. Use the dropdown box to see the earth as it looked from zero to 750 million years ago. Use your cursor to spin the planet to view any area or to zoom in and out. Another option lets viewers choose to view the earth as it appeared with the first appearance of algae, shells, and other items on through the extinction of dinosaurs.
In the Classroom
Engage student interest by sharing this site with them and letting them explore. Use Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to create a bulletin board for students to share their observations. Ask them to add sticky notes and drawings with their thoughts and questions. If desired, create multiple boards to divide information by periods. Use a bookmarking site such as Wakelet, reviewed here, to include a link to the site as part of a larger learning unit on dinosaurs or the earth's evolution over time. Include videos, websites, quizzes, and more as part of your unit on Wakelet. As students learn about changes in the earth over millions of years, enhance learning using Google My Maps, reviewed here. The Young People's Trust for the Environment (UK) offers a large selection of fact sheets about animals and environmental issues. The information is primarily text-based. Scroll through the alphabetical list of animals to view available fact sheets. Sheets contain an image along with other pertinent information such as habitat, size, food, and daily life. Click the blue box on the upper left side of the page to download and print all information in PDF format. Note: Only text appears on downloaded sheets; images appear as X's. Choose the Environmental Facts link to explore fact sheets with subjects ranging from Acid Rain through Zoos. This site was created in the United Kingdom, so you may notice some slight spelling differences from American English.

Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Bookmark this site for use with any animal or environmental unit. You will need to pair weaker readers with a stronger reader since the information is almost entirely text. Allow students to choose an animal or environmental topic from the resources available and become "experts." Have students create an annotated image including text boxes and related links using a tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here. Challenge students use Ourboox, reviewed here. Ourboox creates beautiful page-flipping digital books in minutes, and you can embed video, music, animation, games, maps and more. Have students create maps of animal habitats using Zeemaps, reviewed here. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose various locations on a map where they find the habitats.

Animal Characteristics Game provides five animal category bins: mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish. Above the bins are various characteristics arranged in random order. Students drag and drop the appropriate characteristics into the corresponding bin. Once all of the characteristics are dropped in the correct bin, watch for a fun surprise! If students struggle with the characteristics or want to learn more, they can click on the Animal Classification icon to learn information for each species. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Share this site on your projector or interactive whiteboard to introduce a new unit on habitats or for review. Students could be split into two teams and keep a tally of which team gets the most characteristics correct. Animal Diversity Web is an on-line database of animal natural history, distribution, and classification organized as an on-line encyclopedia. Users can search the Animalia Kingdom by Phylum, Sub phylum, Class, Order and Family. Choose the corresponding icons to view facts, descriptions, pictures, specimens and hear the sounds of the various animals. This site contains a lot of information. Younger students may need some assistance/instruction maneuvering through the site initially.
In the Classroom
Introduce the site on a projector or interactive whiteboard before asking students to investigate their own animal choices. Older students can do comparisons and contrasts to better understand the taxonomy and can also read about naming of species. See the teaching link for more ideas. Play the sounds on your computer speakers, especially if the animals are unfamiliar in your part of the world. Sounds require Quicktime. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..This site also has a very public message about its authorship (college students) which can prompt a good discussion about reliability and appropriateness of sources. Reinforce critical evaluation of sources and information literacy in your science class, too!

This nicely organized visual site about animals is perfect for independent student research at the elementary level. Students can select an animal by type, read through the kid-friendly text to learn more about it, and browse through some great photographs. Animal topics include birds, fish, reptiles, spiders and insects, amphibians, and mammals. The site also includes a search feature (scroll to the bottom of the home page) and games, puzzles, and other activities. Although all reference links are active, some of the games and puzzle links are no longer working. This site does include some small advertisements.

As part of their extensive site for vocabulary, roots, and more, MyVocabulary.com has added a themed area for Animals in their Habitat. Find interactive puzzles using animals and habitat vocabulary words. You will also find fill-in-the-blanks and definition matches, all using the same 21 theme words. This and other "themes" available on the site will make vocabulary development enjoyable.
In the Classroom
Share the puzzles on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have students work with a partner to solve the puzzles on their own. Challenge students to try to create their own word puzzles using a site like Just Crosswords, reviewed here, if you are just beginning to integrate technology into your classroom, or Educaplay, reviewed here, if you and your students are experienced tech users.
