Take an in-depth look at animals that have roamed the Earth from 65 million years ago through today with this interesting site. Begin with the introduction to find some incredible facts about the lack of life on early Earth and a timeline. Then explore early life in the planet's seas using images of fossils and descriptions of climate and earth changes leading to the formation of other forms of life. Other sections explore the Reign of Dinosaurs, Frosty Animals of the Ice Age, and Today's Animals and Their Distant Cousins. The site is also available in Spanish.

Make an animated character with your voice and the easy-to-use tools provided by Adobe Express. Choose a character from those provided; options include robots, superheroes, cartoon characters, and more. Next, click the background link to select a background image from those available on the site, select a color, or upload an image from your device. The final customization option allows you to size the video by choosing from several options customized for use with social media. After making your selections, click record to create your audio recording of up to two minutes in length. After the animation processes, download the final product as an MP4 file or open it in Adobe Creative Cloud Express, reviewed here to add filters, text, and additional animations. Registration isn't required to create and download your animations.

Design, organize, animate, and publish creations using Animatron. Use Animatron's backgrounds and characters, or upload your own. Be sure to take advantage of the Tutorials and Tips, and the Knowledge Base for a full understanding of the many features available. Registration isn't required to create an Animatron project; however, you will need to register to save and share. Free accounts allow users to create up to five public projects with up to 2GB storage (50Gb/month). The Tutorials are in video format and reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the video tutorials may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Challenge older students to create their own Animatrons. Students can use Animatron to share their ideas or to "prototype" an idea. Students can create videos to show math processes, explanations of complex concepts, review new learning, teach others, explain scientific processes, tell stories, or present research. Flip your classroom using Animatron presentations. Use Animatron to create teacher-authored animations for students in ANY grade. Animatron is an excellent way to present new information or ideas for discussion. It is an easy way to prepare information for the class when a substitute is coming. Share Animatron creations on your website or blog for students to review at home. Use an Animatron video on the first day of school to explain class rules or give an exciting introduction to the year ahead. Use Animatron to create movies or presentations for back-to-school night or conference nights to display on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Anki is a flashcard creator with a twist. The program is used everyday, and each response is rated as Easy, Very easy, Good, or Again. Very easy questions won't be shown again for 7 days, Again responses will be shown again during the same session. Choose the number of flashcards to use for each session, time to spend, and number of questions to be offered. Search by topic to find readymade flashcards or create your own. This program needs to be downloaded to your computer following the onsite directions. Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux versions are available.
In the Classroom
Create flashcards for your classes using Anki -- or have them make their own. Try using them as an introduction to a concept, then again in the practice of the concept, and again as a final review. It is a nice three for one creation deal! This would be great for teaching Latin prefixes and suffixes of words to students. Use this site to learn science terms or for standardized test preparation. Try having students create flashcards and share with each other to quiz themselves within their own groups. Teach students in higher grades how to create flash cards with multiple blanks to challenge their brain to remember more pieces of the puzzle (even counterexamples). Show them how to carefully read through their classroom notes and underline the most important word or words in a sentence. Then have them leave out the most important words for their flashcards. Learning support teachers might want to have small groups create cards together to review together before tests. Have students create flashcard sets to "test" classmates on what they "teach" in oral reports. Since this program is a download, flashcards may be difficult to share - one suggestion is to download the program onto a USB stick to be shared as needed. Use the projection feature to project information from a mobile device onto your whiteboard from anywhere in the room. Free plans offer up to two hours of sharing daily. Add the optional extension to Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers to annotate web pages, take screen captures, and highlight online information. Enroll up to ten students in a course to allow students to follow your screen on their device. Once you create a class, use Annotate to live stream information, take assessments, and schedule homework. Annotate also has a built-in graphing calculator that is handy for math instructors.

Learn about animals of the Antarctic with printable trading cards. This four-page set includes facts and information about twelve inhabitants of the Antarctic. Follow the directions to print the set in color, fold, glue, and cut to create the trading cards.
In the Classroom
Engage students in learning about animals of the Antarctic with these brightly-colored trading cards. Provide a set of cards to different groups of students and create their games based on the facts. For example, have students find the animals with the longest life span, largest or smallest weight, or longest length. Enhance student learning by introducing the TeachersFirst Reading Trek, Mr. Popper's Penguins, reviewed here. Use the trade book, Mr. Popper's Penguins, and the Reading Trek, which includes a virtual field trip of resources that takes students on a learning adventure to the South Pole. Students will enjoy the pictures and games on this website. The use of a peer (student) visitor sharing information will make this site more appealing to students. Though some of the activities require Flash, there is still a lot to be learned at this site.

This site from San Francisco's Exploratorium chronicles the journey of a team of scientists in 2001 and from McMurdo sound to the South Pole. There is also a link to Ice Stories from 2007-2008. Study topics included everything from global warming to continental drift, and there are lots of reports and images to prove it. Even though this site is a bit dated, it still contains a lot of information to discover. This would be a nice background site for an Antarctica unit. Though the videos require Quick Time, there is plenty of information on this site to make your visit worthwhile!

It's July 20, 1969 and millions of Americans are glued to their television watching Neil Armstrong take that first historic step on the surface of the moon. This multimedia NASA site recreates that Apollo 11 mission, from its launch to its splashdown. Students can view vintage photographs, listen to the mission's audio recording, browse news articles, and tour the video gallery.

Use the video clips over the interactive whiteboard to supplement the text in discussing the Apollo missions. Get right to the core of the science by exploring Apple Education, especially the Life Cycle of and apple tree. You can learn all about parts of a plant while enjoying the apple theme. You will also find links to history and legends about apples, apple facts, apple varieties, nutritional information, and apple fun (including links to word searches, online apple games, and other pencil-paper activities). The site is also available in Spanish.
In the Classroom
This site could be just the anchor you need for an apple-themed week. Spread the activities throughout the week. This archaeological site is interactive, educational and engaging. This site has numerous activities and facts. Some of the topics include "Inca Investigation", "The Ancient City of Petra" and "Up Close With a Zapotec Urn". The "Big Idea" link provides an overview of archeology. The interactive activities are diverse and informative. Though the games on this site require Flash, there is still plenty to learn and do.
In the Classroom
Introduce the site and the "Big Idea" on a projector or interactive whiteboard, then assign students to complete one of the many interactive activities. Share the results with the class on a projector as groups complete the activity.
