Be sure to watch the food safety and healthy eating tips videos prior to the start of cooking activities. There is also a link to view this site in Spanish. In the Classroom
Use the recipes to enrich lessons about sequencing and directions. Students could write the directions according to what they see on the video or practice following the directions by making the recipes in small groups. They could even present their recipes to the class in a cooking show format. Try having students write the directions in a wiki and enhance it with digital photographs. This site would be a beneficial addition to Family and Consumer Science or health units. You may want to add this link to your class website for students to "cook up some fun" at home.

Use this inspirational site to encourage helping to save the Earth. Kids for Saving Earth was created by a student, Clinton Hill, who died from cancer at the age of eleven. The friendly interface contains many suggestions for different activities, worksheets, music, or videos sprinkled throughout the website. Membership is not required to access materials though memberships with additional materials are available for groups and families. Sign up for free emails with new information through e-pals newsletters. Use the search bar find "Defenders of the Earth" and click "Learn More" to view Defenders of the Planet schools all over using activities to make a difference in their area.
In the Classroom
Use many of these wonderful resources to understand environmental problems and find small ways students can make a difference. Share the video clip and other parts of this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Create action days at your school with students working to teach other schoolmates, families, and their community about environmental problems. Kids Open Dictionary allows your students to 'use' this free dictionary, and it encourages your students to 'write' definitions as well. This wiki site invites you to edit and create the dictionary. You may also use the Glossary tool to customize your terms for specific purposes. Choose multi-presentation modes for presenting your glossary. It's for kids, so it's safe. Their editors approve all postings before they go online. The sign up is quick. Check your school's acceptable use policy on student usage of internet sites that require a login. Registration does require an email. Rather than using your personal email, create a free Gmail account to use for memberships. If you plan to have students register individually, you may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each group of students (by code name or number) within your classes. In the Classroom
Imagine the sense of accomplishment your class will feel if you allow them to submit definitions to this site. They become the Merriam Websters in your own classroom. Definitions don't need to be perfect as the online community will continually edit them. One drawback at the present time is that not all words have definitions. This site is still "under construction" and being built upon daily. Classes can get in on the ground floor in providing definitions for these incomplete areas. Assign cooperative learning groups to explore various vocabulary words in social studies, science, math, music, or art class. Have the groups add their new vocabulary words into the "Kids Open Dictionary." You may find the usefulness of this site in the generating of definitions for now. (This will be a moot point as the dictionary becomes filled.) Find easy to use information and classroom ideas for your energy unit on this site. Get ideas for Earth Day or any day celebrating energy awareness and conservation. Spend time in class understanding exactly what energy is and ways it is made. Use a variety of objects that students are familiar with to show the difference between potential and kinetic energy (such as a ball or toy car at the top of a track and then release it). Use the Instructors Guides for excellent prompts and ideas to increase energy awareness in your students. Don't forget to discuss energy safety with your students! As a class activity, provide the opportunity for students to create brochures, posters, or videos to promote energy awareness and safety for the school and community using the information they learned! There is such a wealth of information available at this website, teachers can find numerous subjects, activities and information. Several kid-approved recipes are also provided. Be sure to check out the movies - they provide general science information and simple explanations of the many systems of the body (and are quite entertaining). The "Cosmic Q's and A's" link uses text and video to explain what actually goes on in space. Browse through a collection of on-line, interactive games including "Moon Pong" and "Crazy Asteroid," listen to Monty Python's "Galaxy Song" (it IS educational!), and try out some of the experiments patterned after those performed on space missions. This is fun and educational site that can add a unique dimension to a lesson on space exploration.

There is a wide variety of topics, making this site very useful in nearly any K-3 classroom or for children at home. Video lengths run from 1-3 minutes, making them great for young students. Hover your mouse over the right-hand corner of each video icon to view the length. Sort by date added (old to new or new to old) or most popular. Subscribe to the KidsTV123 channel to receive notification of new videos or click on the Watch Later link to add to your YouTube watch list. (You must have a YouTube membership to subscribe or watch later.) The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, these videos may not be viewable.

The younger kid's section features topics like How the Body Works, Staying Safe, Feelings, and several more. In addition, some of the pages are available in Spanish. Other sections include health issues for grown ups and a glossary, the latter of which is available in Spanish. Video clips include health-related topics featuring well-known athletes. The teen section provides answers to multiple teen questions about health including sexual issues, drug and alcohol concerns, food and fitness, your body, your mind, and hot topics. The parents' section has regular health topics about raising a child.
In the Classroom
Health teachers will want to share this site on their teacher web page or in class as part of sex ed units and study of disease. Younger students wondering about illnesses such as cancer will also be able to find good information, written at a level they can understand.This site contains open discussion of topics. We suggest that you preview it to be sure it is in compliance with your school's policies. Share this colorful page with students using your interactive whiteboard or projector when introducing any health, nutrition, or Family and Consumer Science lessons or unit. For younger students, and over several class periods, have them color in their blank PDF, as you (or other students) read the text for what that food or that particular picture is about. With younger students, as each individual picture is complete use Gravity, reviewed here, as a video response platform for students to share what they learned about that food group. With older students consider setting up a Padlet, reviewed here, for students to brainstorm recipes where the main ingredient comes from a particular food group. Use the Padlet columns feature for organizing the food groups.

Calling all builders - this site has it all! View interactives, videos, the "Great Picture Book of Construction Equipment," "Everything about Construction Equipment," Q and A, printables, and more. This site is full of great information about construction equipment, perfect for invention units, physics of simple machines, engineering, and more. There is also a link to learn more about anti-mine equipment, sure to spark some serious class discussion with older students.
In the Classroom
During a physics unit on simple machines, have students look at the various components of the heavy equipment and analyze which simple machines they see as PART of these huge machines. Doing a unit on inventions? Discuss how the inventions of these machines were designed specifically to meet a need. Use this site during a unit on engineering as you learn about how these machines are designed to accomplish a specific task. With older students, discuss the uses of the anti-mine equipment. Create a class "Construction Wiki" where all students contribute after researching specific equipment. Not comfortable with wikis? Kinteractive Learning offers several free and useful teacher tools for use on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the dartboard selector to randomly choose students from your class. Import your class from a txt file or input names manually. Easily edit your class list with absent students. Once ready, click to spin the dartboard, launch a dart and see what names appear! Open each tool in a new window for a larger viewing area. At the time of this review, the other free tools included a random name generator, scoreboard, and stopwatch. Access to all tools is available after registration with email and a password. Note that other areas of this site are subscription-based.
In the Classroom
Use the free registration option to sign up for the site. Bookmark and use this site as a tool for classroom management, such as a way for choosing random students, keeping score, stopwatch, and others. All of the tools are perfect for use on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Plan and design your perfect kitchen garden with the easy to use tools found on the Kitchen Garden Planner. Use the drop-down boxes to select a width and size for the grid to place plant options. After choosing the size of your garden, add items by dropping and dragging plants of your choice into your grid. Scroll through the provided list to select from a large variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs starting with Alpine Strawberries through Winter Squash. Save completed gardens to the site or use the links to print or email your garden plan.
In the Classroom
Use the garden planner in a variety of content areas. In math, use the grid system found on the site to reinforce multiplication and addition facts. In science, ask students to create vegetable gardens or fruit gardens as they learn about different types of plants. Have older students research planting zones to create a garden appropriate for your location or research methods used for organic gardening. After learning about plants and gardens, have students use a comic creation tool like ToonyTool, reviewed here, to create single frame cartoons.
