This site offers free book making activities -- the old fashioned way with paper and art supplies. Of particular interest is the project titled Making Books around the World in which students can make slat books, palm leaf books, accordion books, "papyrus" scrolls, and cloth books of many types. Tips for teachers make the book making projects accessible. Book plans are also available in Spanish.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plan to do final projects on research of a variety of topics. This is a great find for gifted students or ESL/ELL students since it is so varied and flexible. Challenge students to make books as an end of unit project in science, social studies, and math. Have a bookmaking contest in your classroom. Have students make creative books rather than a traditional book report. Share this site together with art teachers. Identify the biological, geographical, cultural, and social issues that exist in the world, based on what the pictures show and what their research uncovers. Stay up to date and learn about the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover mission as it explores the surface of Mars. Follow links to learn about the four science objectives of the mission, view the timeline, and learn about the spacecraft. In addition, view raw images taken from Mars, observe a weather report, and listen to sounds from Mars' surface. Be sure to visit the site often throughout the mission as content is updated with the latest videos and observations.
In the Classroom
Include a link to the Perseverance Rover site on classroom computers for students to visit and view the latest updates from Mars. Consider using Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to create an ongoing class journal sharing observations and findings. Ask students to add a sticky note with new findings and information after exploring the site. Enhance learning by asking students to design a spaceship or rover that would explore one of the other planets. Use Google Drawings, reviewed here, as a starting point for students to create their drawing. Ask them to add text boxes with descriptions of their spaceship/rover and the reasoning behind their design. Extend learning by asking students to brainstorm ideas on applying Perseverance's design features to improve everyday items used at home and school. The Mars Education Program is a resource for STEM lessons and activities related to Mars and outer space. Mars resources include videos, images, and news on the latest research of the planet. Don't miss Ask Dr. C (a beta project) in the Resources menu to pose questions about Mars and see the answers. Stay up to date with the latest information from Mars by perusing The Red Planet Report from the Mars Resources menu. Visit the STEM plans for lessons in exploring, scientific research, and conceptual modeling. Aligned to National Science Education Standards, lessons have been developed for K-12 classrooms. Lessons include complete descriptions of activities, learning objectives, handouts, and assessments to download in PDF format. In most cases, you must open the pdf to see the grade range on the lessons.
In the Classroom

Teachers will also find links to more extensive NASA classroom resources on Mars and plans for further explorations. NASA's web resources are huge, and finding suitable materials can sometimes require some experimenting. This site will certainly interest elementary-level explorers.
In the Classroom
You may want to introduce this site using the subject Space Place for Kids at the bottom of the page. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector and show them the All About Mars and the different Mars Rovers (robots). Bookmark the site on classroom computers (or in a lab) to allow students to explore the Adventure Game to Mars. Choose from topics and activities on this site to use in class or at computer centers. Replace paper journals and enhance classroom technology use by asking students to reflect on their learning in blog entries using Penzu, reviewed here. Even though the site says the "challenge is coming soon" just click the video and it will come up in YouTube. The Download works perfectly. Use a marshmallow challenge to motivate your students! The concept of this project is to have teams of people work together to create a free standing structure that supports a marshmallow. Sounds overly simple? Well, not always. The given materials for each team are simple, inexpensive, and require creative thinking and problem solving skills to use! All in all this adds up to a fun, interesting, and entertaining activity for young to older students, business people, and any group that needs to learn how to work and think together. Spaghetti, string, marshmallows and masking tape are all the supplies that you will need. Have fun with this, your students are sure to do so! The site recommends giving your class one hour to complete the project and activities. They also mention this project would work for smaller groups (4 students) up to larger groups (800), divided into groups of 2 or 4 and working together. There is a typo in the opening paragraph of the site. However the activity content was worth looking over the typo.
In the Classroom
This engineering challenge would be great during a unit on structures. However, in ANY classroom it would be a solid and creative way to teach design process, group skills, and creative problem solving. This activity is so versatile that it could be use in any grade, even at the college or business level. Of course in younger elementary grades, more instruction would be necessary and possibly some parent volunteers. Its lessons are multiple, from fluency, flexibility, possibility thinking, and promoting originality. In science classes, try including this activity in a lesson on gravity or forces. Prior to implementing this lesson, watch the TED talks video link for yourself. (These links are available at this site.) It is a worthwhile investment of seven minutes, and download and read the adobe acrobat file on the project. It may be a good idea, depending on the age of your students to create a short PowerPoint with the rules and instructions. Also, a visual timer and musical timer would be a great idea for this challenge. Use a site such as the Online Countdown Timer (reviewed here). Show the timer on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) so students are aware of how much time remains. The materials are best given to teams in a small brown bag so that there is an element of surprise and suspense during the instructional period. Another idea is to share this with your administrators, it would make a great challenge for a interactive faculty meeting especially if team building and thinking skills are trying to be built by the administration between faculty members.

If you are lucky enough to have a parent helper in your classroom, allow them to come in and complete experiments with your students each month using ideas found on the site. Challenge students to complete experiments at home and share results with the class. MathScienceMusic provides a large variety of free, engaging, resources to teach math, science, and music to students from kindergarten through college all created through a collaboration with Jazz legend, Herbie Hancock. Click letters on the homepage to begin your musical experience, then scroll down to view the available resources. Each group of resources includes a video introduction explaining the content. Some of the choices include Scratch Jazz (music and coding) and Groove Pizza (Shapes and Angles and Groove). All activities include a short description along with suggestions for appropriate grade level, concepts taught, and links to additional resources. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

View the Outdoor Recreation and Wildlife Cameras links under the Discover tab for great ideas to get out into nature or view wildlife. Use a webcam for students to practice scientific observation! Choose a recipe from the Cooking link to create and share with others. Give students an opportunity to look at the material around the site and share what they find with others in the class. This collection of reviewed resources from TeachersFirst is selected to help students learn measurement and teachers plan projects and classroom activities so to reinforce concepts of both standard and metric measurement. Most are suited to elementary grades, but some of the conversion resources are useful at secondary level.
In the Classroom
