This site from San Francisco's Exploratorium chronicles the journey of a team of scientists in 2001 and from McMurdo sound to the South Pole. There is also a link to Ice Stories from 2007-2008. Study topics included everything from global warming to continental drift, and there are lots of reports and images to prove it. Even though this site is a bit dated, it still contains a lot of information to discover. This would be a nice background site for an Antarctica unit. Though the videos require Quick Time, there is plenty of information on this site to make your visit worthwhile!

In the Classroom

Share this information with your students to use for research projects. Have your students create a Piktochart AI Infographic Maker, reviewed here to show the difference in global warming from the present to 16 years ago!

Prezi is a visual, "zoomable" presentation tool. It is similar to PowerPoint and Keynote, but there is so much more to Prezi! You can graphically arrange a large amount of content, such as a big idea with its supporting information. It creates very dynamic presentations. See samples by clicking "log in" then "Explore" (instead of logging in). Choose a background, follow the instructions and prompts of the program, and before you know it, you will have your very own Prezi to share. If you like to see directions, watch the quick intro video. You can also view Prezis created by others and use them as templates for your own work. Check out the sample created by the TF Edge team here. This tool works in ANY device's web browser, from iPod to Android to laptop. Collaborate on a Prezi with other Prezi members in real time using the Share function. Have a "meeting" to work on the same Prezi in real time. There is a free "edu enjoy" level of membership (requires a school issued email and verification) that allows you to keep your Prezis private, out of public sharing. The regular "enjoy" membership is free for only one month, and its Prezis are public. After 30 days you will be asked if you want to upgrade or continue with the free Prezi, which has File storage limits for free accounts.

In the Classroom

You could map your entire lesson, chapter or unit in one Prezi. Once you introduce the concept with this tool, you can go back to it often with your students as you move to different parts of the unit. It would provide a great way to connect prior knowledge with the next step if you share this on your interactive whiteboard or projector throughout the unit. Or you could post it to your web page or give kids the URL so they can review as often as they need it. Try having the students map a concept or chapter with this tool. In history class, create timelines of relevant events, or in science or math class have them map steps in a process. Have students create Prezis for different events, and then have them post the link to their product on a class blog or wiki. Add a peer review component and require students to comment on at least two other Prezis. The possibilities are endless!

If you have gifted students n your class, offer Prezi as one alternative for sharing extensions to the regular curriculum. If they already know the material, have them investigate a related process or example and share it in the form of a Prezi.

While this exercise is from a site on science and optics, the KWL strategy - a structured form of questioning and answering - is applicable to the study of many topics other than science. Teachers will like this one because it outlines multiple strategies for both inquiry and presentation, giving examples from science, literature, and art.

In the Classroom

If you're not familiar KWL, this is a great starting point.

Explore Cartesian coordinates by dragging points on this interactive graph. Begin with the default version that includes three points, then move points to change the triangular shape on the chart and view labels with the coordinate points and measurements of each side. Use the up/down arrows on the left side of the graph to add points or take advantage of other options allowing users to add or remove a view of the sides and coordinates.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or provide students time to explore on their own as they learn about Cartesian coordinates. Learn the basics of plotting points and identifying coordinates by exploring different options on this graphing site. Engage student interest in graphing coordinates by asking them to substitute paper graphs with this online graph. Then, have students take a screenshot to share the proper coordinates placement on the chart. As students learn more about coordinates and using equations to determine angles and length of sides, ask them to create explainer videos using Typito, reviewed here to describe the math concepts learned.

Are you looking for sources to enrich your science instruction? Primary Resources has an extensive science page full of experiments, handouts, presentations, vocabulary cards, and even rubrics for student assessment. The broad range of categories includes scientific inquiry, life processes and living things, materials and their properties, and physical processes. These valuable resources come from teachers across the world. Contributions range from how to conduct a scientific investigation, SMART board lessons on how to separate mixtures of materials, to PowerPoint presentations on renewable and non-renewable forms of energy. Most activities include a key that indicates the appropriate age group, grade level, or required skill level needed as well as its file format. If you have some of your own scientific resources you treasure, feel free to contribute them to this site. On the left sidebar, you will find links to similar activities in nearly all subject areas: geography, art, history, math, English, welsh, music, and more.

In the Classroom

Celebrate spring by taking your class outside for a budding unit about plants. Primary Resources has slide shows that explain the parts of a flower, what seeds need to grow, how they germinate or explain photosynthesis. Are you preparing students for an upcoming science fair? Primary Resources is also a great source for finding experiments appropriate for primary age students and is helpful when introducing how to conduct an inquiry based science experiment. Interactive presentations demonstrate how to make predictions, form a hypothesis, develop a "fair test" and how to record test results. A few activities include tasks for an interactive whiteboard or projector and others provide handouts or reproducible activity pages.

There is a key that indicates the equivalent United States grade level. The British Key Stages are equivalent to the following age groups; KS 1 for ages five to six, KS 2 for ages seven to eleven, KS 3 for ages twelve to fourteen, and KS 4 for ages fifteen to sixteen. Since this site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Use this site to create polls for your students (or have students create their own). The polls are embeddable in your wiki, blog, or class website. The site is still in beta. You can create a name, an expiration date for the survey, questions (multiple choice, yes or no, and ranking), and input your email address to be informed as results come into the site. If you plan to have students register individually, you may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each group of students (by code name or number) within your classes. Here is a blog post that tells how to set up GMail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. Registration is not required to use this site. There are some advertisements and external links at this site (all appropriate at the time of this review). So if you allow students to use this site on their own, be sure to watch carefully.

In the Classroom

Use this site to collect data for math activities and graphing. Use it for people to rate student-created projects or for social studies projects about elections, or other social issues. Have students make wiki pages on an issue and include a poll and then graph the poll results in math class. Poll parents and grandparents on your class web page to involve them in decisions or use their experiences to help students understand times "long ago."

Create a "fake" Facebook-style page for anyone or anything! It's a good idea to do a little planning ahead of time, then just follow the directions on the landing page. Give your page a name and add an image from your computer. (They insert an image for you if you do not select one, however, you can change the image by clicking on it and selecting one from your computer.) Of course you will need to use a Creative Commons or other copyright-safe image. You can also add videos and links, edit the profile, and your page is almost ready. You must add at least one post and one friend to save work. Under the "Friends" block, you can add blocks such as Family, Major Speeches, etc. Choose "save" from the options on top left side of the page, enter a password, and your unique URL for your Fakebook page appears. Be sure to copy and save this link as it is the only time it is given in the setup process. If you are prepared with images and links, page creation is quick and easy with a small learning curve. Share your Fakebook page with the link to your page.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Engage and create interest in classroom learning with Fakebook. Fakebook is terrific for creating interest in many subjects. Instead of a typical biographical report in social studies, students create a Fakebook page about their famous person. Write about presidents, founding fathers, famous scientists or artists, Civil War soldiers, and more. Have students create a timeline of any historical event (name the page for the event, such as World War II). Use Fakebook to outline a book, play, or film plot, then share with students while studying the material. To use Fakebook to study literature, create a page for the central character, the book's author, or the book's setting. For a unique twist in science class, create a Fakebook page for a periodic element or another science topic. Use the page to describe "the life" of that atom or element. In world language classes, have students do this activity (about themselves) in the second language they are learning. Create a Fakebook page for the first day of school to introduce yourself to students or at Open House for parents. Challenge students to create and share a page about themselves during the first week of school. Share a Fakebook page with students to demonstrate proper netiquette and social sharing. Be sure to share a rubric with students for all expectations of what should be included on their page. Make Fakebook one of the options for your gifted students doing projects beyond the regular curriculum. With no membership required, this tool is simple enough for younger gifted students with parent permission to post work to the web.

If you are looking for an explosion of volcanic activity, you have come to the right place. This website offers a massive amount of information on volcanoes such as satellite images, current eruptions, a volcanic history calendar, earth volcanoes, other world volcanoes, eruption videos, observatory links, expedition journals and photos, and a large amount of factual information. The volcano games still require Java, but there is plenty of images and information to learn from here.

In the Classroom

Share the videos, photos, and more on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Provide this link on your class website for student to use both in and out of the classroom. Challenge students to watch for current volcanic activity and chart (or record) the activity using graphs or maps to find trends and other statistical data. Use an online graphing tool such as ChartGizmo, reviewed here. Have cooperative learning groups investigate various parts of this site and create a Thinglink, reviewed here, to share with the class. This site allows users to narrate a picture.
