The activities are simple enough that they could be used in lower grades or at home.

Follow this animated story to learn about the different food chain roles and the animals of the Savannah that fill these roles. Read the words and watch the organisms move across the screen (and even listen to the sounds of a few -- so turn up the speakers). Follow the story to the end and be sure to click on the joke. Not only is there more information but a knee-slapper pun of a joke as well.
In the Classroom
Use the story prior to discussing roles in the environment. The site is ideal for an interactive whiteboard or projector. In early grades, the teacher or an advanced reader can read the words aloud. Use the story to discuss the roles and interactions of the animals in the story. Assign students to make concept maps on paper or electronically to use the vocabulary and understand the interactions. Use an online tool such as bubbl.us (reviewed here) to create and share the concept maps. Assign groups a different ecosystem or biome. Student groups can identify organisms in that environment that fill those roles. FoodPlay is a website (PDF file) that focuses on teaching good nutritional habits to young children. Through Tickets to Fresh Adventures, students can take a hands-on approach to learning the benefits of good nutrition. The printable PDF file provides 14 easy-to-prepare, kid-friendly, healthy snacks on ticket-style recipe cards. Instructions for making the snacks are located on the reverse side of each card. Print and laminate the colorful tickets for easy distribution. For a black and white version of the tickets, try this link
and have students color their own tickets. Be patient as the Acrobat (pdf) file opens slowly.
In the Classroom
Create a "Recipe of the Day" using the Tickets for Fresh Adventure. Share the recipes on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Or print and laminate the recipes and create a learning center. Break students into small groups and have them create the dish together. Integrate language arts into the fun by including a "Food Journal" to record student thoughts and observations regarding the process of making the dish, the difficulty level and if they would make it again. How about creating a class wiki. Even if students are too young to type themselves, you could highlight the activity for the students and parents to see both in and out of the classroom (with student input, of course). Use the site ChooseMyPlate to identify the food groups that are used in each recipe. Videotape each group making one of the recipes and use as a class presentation for various skills such as following directions and sequencing. Share the videos on a site such as Teacher Tube. Teach across the curriculum by adding the math concepts of measurement to the lessons. Be sure to list this site on your class webpage so students (and parents) can try some of these tasty treats at home.

Designed for students in grades 5-8, this site covers Seasons, Air Pressure, Clouds, and Rock and Roll Weather (types of storms, of course!). Leave the sound on to have text read as you proceed through each section, or turn off sound to read independently. Explore the small activity section containing quick practice activities for identifying clouds, weather forecasting, and exploring the distance to the sun. Another activity contains weather comics with a template for creating your own weather comic. Be sure to check out the Teacher's Guide for many additional resources and teaching ideas. Your Spanish-speaking students will also benefit from this site, simply click the "Espanol" link near the bottom of the page to view in Spanish. At the time this review was last updated, two of the activities were not working, however all of the content remained on the site.

This is an excellent site for both in and outside the classroom! Use videos and information from the site to supplement your current resources for teaching weather. Create a link on classroom computers for students to explore on their own. The site includes two different levels for grades K-4 and 5-12, making this an introduction that can be used in virtually any classroom setting. There is a Teacher Guide with lesson plans, handouts, assessments, related activities and much more. Created with support from the National Science Foundation.
In the Classroom
Introduce this activity with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to show students how to navigate the site. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Many museum sites are little more than a set of on-line directions to get to the brick-and-mortar museum and a few promotional photographs. This site, however, is designed to be used as an online museum. You can start by searching the museum by geographic location or keyword. You can also search by time period from the "Teaching Kit" area. Or click on one of the featured exhibits which range from excavations of the CSS Alabama, the remains of an 18th century fleet sunk in New York's Lake George, to the HMS Serapis. A link to a "teachers' kit" gives information about ordering (free with the exception of shipping costs) a hands-on set of materials to keep and get free updates for as long as they would like to use it. For younger students, there is a slide show that introduces the concepts of underwater archaeology in an interactive whiteboard-friendly format (see featured exhibit: A Children's Introduction).
In the Classroom
Who isn't fascinated by treasure buried under the seas? This site will help you sneak in history lessons by engaging students in the process of underwater archaeology. The site also makes a strong effort to integrate various curriculum areas from art to biology along with the historical importance of various excavations. Students might also want to follow one of the underwater blogs with information about ongoing projects. Have cooperative learning groups create a multimedia project related to one of the blog stories. For visual students, use an online poster creator such as Padlet, reviewed here. Have students use a tool such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. Within each category are several options. Be sure to scroll down the site to read the helpful tips before printing any of the graph paper. Note that the pdfs will also display on an interactive whiteboard for students to graph, draw, and more!
In the Classroom
Save the link to this site for easy access to any type of graph paper or grid you may need throughout the school year. Provide students the link through your class website or blog so that they can access graph paper to use at any time, including for homework. Print out copies of graphs to provide for students. Art teachers will find these grids and geometric patterns useful for teaching about fonts, design principles, and tessellations. Open a pdf on your interactive whiteboard for students to graph using the whiteboard pens or highlighters. You can even use the hexagon grids for students to create "quilt" designs to explore color schemes and repeated patterns. Have students construct geometric figures using various grids to demonstrate area and other geometry concepts on interactive whiteboard.

Give your Moov a title and description then choose from templates offered or create your own Moov from scratch. Modify slides, text, font, image holders, and props. Preview your creation at any time with the play button. Stop and make changes as needed. Upload sounds from your computer in MP3 format: voice, music, or noises. These can be used in parallel, or click the microphone to record your voice. You can also make your moovly interactive by using Flash. Save and share via YouTube, Facebook, or email. Simply click the arrows to scroll through the games. Be aware: if you click "Home" you will be taken to the main page for Kids CBC, not the specific area for primary grades only. So you may want to use the back arrow to return, or mark this as a Favorite for easy return.

These interactives will be a nice addition to any preschool, kindergarten, or first grade classroom. The interactive, Blooming Bubbles, will help your students count while they learn about what is needed to grow a garden. In "Busytown," young children can learn about the different parts of a town. Use the interactives on a whiteboard or in a computer lab. These are also good to use for center work. Be sure to turn up speakers to hear audio for whole class use or use headphones if using this site at a center. WordSift helps anyone easily sift through texts -- just copy and paste any text into WordSift and you can engage in a verbal quick-capture! The program helps to quickly identify important words that appear in the text. After entering text several items will appear, first a word cloud will display the 50 most frequently used words in the text. The most frequently used word will display as a word web in a visual thesaurus. Google image and video search results are also shown. One interesting feature is the ability to click on any of the words in the word cloud to display it in the thesaurus and Google image and video searches. A great way to understand the WordSift tool is to try one of the sample texts offered, such as Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Be sure to check out the "About" link to discover many ideas for use in the classroom. Tips and videos are also available as guides. If you type in a shorter sentence, the site still creates a word cloud using their own related words (not in your original text). Be aware of the advertisements that appear with the word clouds. Advise students not to click on the ads.

This is a classic tool to promote "before reading" strategies and vocabulary development. Use WordSift to preview text to be used in class and define vocabulary before reading to increase reading comprehension. Have students use WordSift with different portions of text to identify key words and vocabulary for class presentations. Use WordSift to discuss different meanings of words using images presented through the site. This site isn't only for English teachers, share with Science and Social Studies teachers to use in their classrooms with reading texts in their content areas. ENL/ELL and learning support teachers will want to share this as a support for any reading assigned in regular classes. Be sure to show students how to copy/paste to WordSift texts from informational web pages and news stories on the web, as well. They offer educators a means to use LEGO sets as essential tools that engage students while challenging their creativity and enhancing their knowledge and comprehension. As a thinking teacher, you only need to look on the Teachersfirst Editor's Blog here to realize what a hot topic teaching creativity is and how it fits into the classroom. From role-playing and meeting the needs of early childhood development to theme-based sets for older students, LEGO Activities offer a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching. There are also specific sets designed to cover specific subject areas, including technology curriculum. As you browse the activities, you will find obvious connections to curriculum in simple machines and other science topics, as well.
