Word Hippo is a word study tool for synonyms, antonyms, and more. Look for rhyming words, opposites, translations to a variety of languages, plurals, definitions and uses for the word, etc. The site also makes suggestions for other words in case you might have made a typo or do not know the spelling. As with any other reference, students should be cautioned to be sure these are accurate definitions needed for the context in which they are studying the words. You will want to spell out consequences and/or supervise to be sure students are not searching for inappropriate words, but the most egregious words of bad taste do not appear to be available for search at this site.

In the Classroom
Use this site for vocabulary development and word study assignments, such as writing sentences, paragraphs, or essays using new words. Since the site permits translation, this would be a valuable tool in world language classes, ENL/ELL classes, and more. Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard and elicit examples to show the class how quickly it works. Have students create their own word walls with synonyms, antonyms, sentences, and more for their latest vocabulary words. Try a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here, for each student to create an online "wall" with words aligned to color coded stickies for synonyms. antonyms, etc. Alternatively, have students create class challenges for their peers with color coded matching activities for the interactive whiteboard matching words to synonyms, antonyms, and an appropriate fill in the blank sentence. Share this as a favorite on your teacher public page for handy reference any time students encounter an unknown word. Join a citizen science project! Younger students especially are fascinated by ladybugs. This fabulous site is a great resource for learning how to collect ladybugs, photograph them, identify the different species, and report your findings. Pictures are uploaded to the site and information is compiled by Cornell to understand more about the decline in ladybug species. Visit other pages for information on "Ladybugs Found," and "Legends, Lore, Facts, and More." Other activities include a "Discover Life Ladybug page," "Insect Conservation Biology," "Cool Bug Stuff," and "Sweepnet Safari" among others. Links to other Cornell projects include "Cornell Lab of Ornithology," "Firefly Watch," "Project BudBurst," and "The Great Sunflower Project." Some of the activities at this site require Flash which is no longer supported by most browsers. However, there is loads of inormation to learn from that doesn't require Flash.
In the Classroom
Expand your class activities from simple, traditional ones to collaborative, data-generating projects. Teach a unit on ecosystems and communities by evaluating and studying the insects and other organisms in the area. Discuss differences between species of ladybugs (if found). This can lead into discussions of biodiversity, classification, and habitats. Have students take pictures and count ladybugs both around the community, school, and home. Report findings to the site and use any information to plot locations of the various ladybugs in local and distant areas. Students will gain an understanding of the work of scientists on a problem and how to accumulate data and evidence. Students can even find areas where ladybugs are found and write a proposal to create a wildlife area there, if possible. Each morning and afternoon, follow along on a live Safari with one of the Wild Earth rangers. View the passion of the Wild Earth creators as they share their unbelievable footage live to a global audience. View the nature of Africa unaltered and in its natural state. Learn about the different kinds of animals and the schedule for times of Safaris and other events. Past videos are viewed in the archive.
In the Classroom
Use the Wild Earth Channel to identify behavior patterns in animals, interactions between animals and people, or to compare actual behavior of animals vs. what students may have read in the past. Have students create artwork, stories, or poems about animals viewed on Wild Earth. Even first graders can "observe" and keep a science notebook of their observations as you set this site up on your classroom computer for daily observation times. Have students make interactive stories or a class science notebook using a tool such as Bookemon ,reviewed here. Or view the WildEarthtv archives and create a time line for the various animals. Create an interactive timeline using a resource such as Sutori, reviewed here, that can include images, text, and collaboration. Identify when certain repeated activities take place in the preserve and how animals differ in their time lines. Compare the daily/weekly patterns of humans to the patterns of animals.Be sure to include this link on your teacher web page for students to access outside school hours! They may want to share the African experience at home, as well.

In the Classroom
This site is useful for both teachers and students. During the first day of school, create a simple animation to share with your class. Highlight information about yourself, class rules, highlights from the year, and more. Create math animations showing different geometric shapes on 2-3 slides (just click to copy a frame, rather than remaking the slide) and giving the students a chance to guess the shape before the answer is provided on the next slide. Challenge students to create their own animations "introducing themselves" to the class. Students could also create animations to demonstrate what they have learned about a piece of literature, a science unit, social studies theme or unit, or more. Save the students' work and share the animations on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Challenge your gifted students to create animations about their in-depth interests or curriculum concepts they have pretested out of so others in the class can learn from them. If your class is learning about the oceans of the world, delve even "deeper" by sharing this site on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have cooperative learning groups explore specific areas of this site and create a multimedia presentation to share with the class. Have students create a PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This tool allows for narrating and adding text to a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be uploaded), and then narrate the photo as if it were a news report. Google Read Along is an entertaining, interactive website designed to help young children learn to read. This site is currently available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, and Urdu. Though you can use Google Read Along on your computer, the best experience will be by using an Android device. Read Along engages young readers with a friendly character named Diya, who provides assistance and feedback when needed. Students receive immediate feedback by earning stars for each word they read correctly. In addition, Diya will help if children are stuck on a particular word. Gamification makes learning to read fun and engaging! Students earn stars and badges and can level up to more advanced books as they become increasingly better readers. Google Read Along also tracks how many minutes students spend actively reading. A Google account is required, and enable your microphone access for your browser.
In the Classroom
Google Read Along would be a great addition to any preschool or early elementary classroom. Teachers who work with ENL students or adults learning to read may also find this site helpful. Students will gain confidence by practicing reading independently yet still get assistance if needed, all while the teacher can work with individual students or small groups. In addition, many books are cross-curricular, so they can be used to enhance instruction for other core subjects.Comments

Used to attack Union ships blockading the Charleston, SC harbor, the Hunley successfully sank the USS Housatonic, then mysteriously disappeared. This site is worth a look for both its scientific and historical possibilities. This site requires QuickTime. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

This tool uses a short questionnaire to guide students to recommended projects based on length of time needed to work on the project, grade level, and topic for research. Be sure to also visit the teachers' portion of the site to find STEM lesson plans for all grade levels, science fair tools, engineering design information, and much more.

This site offers free book making activities -- the old fashioned way with paper and art supplies. Of particular interest is the project titled Making Books around the World in which students can make slat books, palm leaf books, accordion books, "papyrus" scrolls, and cloth books of many types. Tips for teachers make the book making projects accessible. Book plans are also available in Spanish.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plan to do final projects on research of a variety of topics. This is a great find for gifted students or ESL/ELL students since it is so varied and flexible. Challenge students to make books as an end of unit project in science, social studies, and math. Have a bookmaking contest in your classroom. Have students make creative books rather than a traditional book report. Share this site together with art teachers. Many different kinds of resources are included such as task cards, classroom management charts, coloring sheets, worksheets, and posters. Use the search bar to find specific content or browse using links to grade level content and topics such as the End of the Year and Common Core Freebies. Follow links for directions about downloading materials.
In the Classroom
Bookmark Classroom Freebies as an excellent resource for teaching materials throughout the school year. Take advantage of the free printables for use on bulletin boards, for classroom management, and centers. Choose materials from the site to use in substitute folders. Be sure to share this site with your fellow teachers! You might consider finding snow day and vacation day activities to post on your class website for parent and student use.

This very simple tool allows you to show how the earth's rotation affects daylight. By viewing different time zones, latitude, and longitude you can see where it is day and night. The site does allow you to zoom in slightly, but not too close. There are many "custom" viewing options for current cloud cover, IR imagery, and much more.
In the Classroom
This tool is great for all levels. Use this as part of a science, social studies or geography lesson. Put this site up on your interactive whiteboard or projector. When using this with young students, use the zoom feature and zoom into different areas of the world to show them day and night. What a great way to teach about opposites. When using with older students show them how to find locations using the latitude and longitude feature.
