Through hands-on, interactive games and animations, this site tackles subjects that are often considered too advanced for elementary students and presents them simply and concisely.A la carte style menu lets you pick and choose subject areas that relate to your classroom. In the Classroom
There is a special section for teachers that offers printable pictures for the classroom and classroom activities. Use the menus or search function to find extenxsion topics for your regular curriculum, such as "What Batteries Will Last Until Your Old Age?" when studying electricity, and share them on a projector or as a classroom center during that unit. Encourage budding scientists by making this site available on your classroom computer all the time or sharing it on your teacher web site. Play the Space Place Musings podcast as students wait for their bus. The full site provides enrichment or home activities for kids and parents, too.

Movies and examples show examples that students see in everyday life. The movies have no sound, just video you can play over and over. This site requires reading skills, so partner someone with non-readers if students are navigating it on their own.

Use the on the left, click Science Snacks A-Z to see the entire collection or click Special Collections to find themed snacks like Snack With Videos, Science Snacks for K-5, Science Snacks to Celebrate Woment in Math and several other topics. While some projects require more elaboate supplies and equipment, others are fairly simple.
In the Classroom
Try this link when you need a hands-on illustration to a principle in your curriculum. If you have gifted students, you may want to share this link with their parents for some at-home enrichment, as well. Ask students to choose a snack from the A-Z list that is of interest to them (let "like-minded" students work together). Created in California, teachers in other regions will likely need to make some adjustments to some of the materials, but the site contains extensive resources for teachers to use in constructing their own lessons based on the gardening experience.

There are some great interdisciplinary opportunities here, but teachers will need to work thoughtfully to adapt the raw materials to local circumstances. Consider sharing information from this site with your school's parent/teacher organization to gain support and possible funding for a garden project. Gardening is a perfect topic for student blogs. This situational multimedia quest puts students in the role of an associate producer, searching for information needed for an up-coming television series about Bayville. As they gather information on eight different habitats throughout the bay area, students must record the data in their virtual PDA and draw connections between the state of the bay and the plants and animals that live there. To save work between sessions, students must complete a free registration. Complete lesson plans, worksheets, answer keys, and scripts are provided.

Bring the power and drama of an actual earthquake into your classroom with this beautifully designed Web site. In addition to basic information about the science behind this natural phenomenon - including explanations of plate tectonics, faults, and how scientist measure earthquake force - the site provides historical information about some of the world's most devastating quakes and some breathtaking video clips.
In the Classroom
Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector. As a class go through the information titled Great Shakes, then show students how navigate through the site on their own. Have students take notes on the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. They can do this with pen and paper or online. If you want the assignment online, explain to students they need to open a new tab in their browser window and take notes with a tool such as Memo Notepad, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Conclude this lesson by having small groups of students click on "Active Zone" and choose one of the creative, hands-on activities to bring into your classroom and demonstrate on an assigned day (they'll love the cream-filled cookie one!).
