The actual Field Trip is a 60-minute overview of forest ecology, broken down into three independent segments. Turn every student's favorite class distraction into a learning opportunity with this lesson that takes a scientific look at the common paper airplane. Instructions on how to properly fold an airplane are provided (not that your students will need those!), but then the challenge begins. Structural adjustments to increase performance are discussed, the function of the paper in the construction process is examined, and basic concepts of flight are explained. Pair this activity with a study of the Wright Brothers and the history of flight, or with an environmental lesson on paper recycling.
In the Classroom
This site would be great for a physics unit discussing the aerodynamics of flight. Have a team competition as students use the site on an interactive whiteboard and try to create the best paper planes they can - through consideration of scientific processes that go into flight. The "Cosmic Q's and A's" link uses text and video to explain what actually goes on in space. Browse through a collection of on-line, interactive games including "Moon Pong" and "Crazy Asteroid," listen to Monty Python's "Galaxy Song" (it IS educational!), and try out some of the experiments patterned after those performed on space missions. This is fun and educational site that can add a unique dimension to a lesson on space exploration.

Shakhashiri, of the University of Wisconsin - Madison, provides many fun, easy, and intriguing chemistry experiments that can be done quickly, easily and safely in the classroom or at home. Just a few common household materials are needed. The Professor even scatters thought-provoking questions throughout the directions, followed by clear and concise explanations. The history and origin of chocolate (from its start in the Amazon rainforests to its invasion of Europe) is presented through photographs, images, and an easy to understand text. The article entitled "Chocolate invades Europe" is a great way to show how one good can affect the entire economy of a continent. Share the article on the interactive whiteboard or projector to allow students to read together in class. As a class create a Venn Diagram discussing what they know about chocolate now to another product such as sugar, tobacco, or even slaves if your class is mature enough to look at the economics of the issue.
