If your students can't get out to the country, here's a way to experience farm life - actually six different types of farms. Suitable for elementary students, there are images, simple text, and a few animations and other illustrations of aspects of each type of farm - everything from fish to cattle and chickens. Primary students could use this one with some teacher assistance. Created by Virginia Tech University.

Here's the latest in the Exploratorium's series on the physics of sports. The science of hockey includes information on the physics of skating, the materials used in the game equipment, and the reaction times required to stop a puck moving at 90 miles per hour. There's lots of great exploring in this one.

In the Classroom

This is the perfect site to use to extend student learning about force and motion while relating them to real-world activities. Break students into small groups to start exploring the different sections. You may want all groups to start with "The Ice" as suggested, and then you can assign or have student groups choose to investigate the other sections. As students investigate the sections they should keep track of what they are learning either by taking notes using a digital tool such as Memo Notepad, reviewed here (tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers), or organizing information into a concept map like TUZZit, reviewed here. Once completed challenge students to share their findings with the rest of the groups using an infographic creator such as Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here. Infographics present difficult information easy to understand format, and Canva has a whole library of templates for you to choose from.

This Canadian site is just what the bear buffs need - an introduction to the habitat and lifestyle of North America's most famous bears. There's a large "bear basics" section, along with details on staying safe when sharing space with grizzly bears. But alas, there are very few photos.

In the Classroom

During a class on environmental conservation, have students open this site on their individual computers. Looking at the site, what do they think would be the most beneficial actions to take to conserve land for bears? Use this site as a launchpad for a discussion on human-animal interaction, and the affect humans have had on their habitat. This site would also be a useful source for any student working on a research project, making it an excellent site to post on the class wiki or web page so students could access it both in and out of the classroom!

Here's a site with dozens of images and histories of military and civilian aircraft. The site also includes histories of many aircraft used by U.S. presidents. Click Education from the top menu bar and find a section of lesson plans by scrolling down the page. View a list of the scavenger hunts on the right menu bar. Type videos in the search bar to find a list. This site could assist with research on aviation history or related topics.

In the Classroom

Click on "explore museum exhibits" from the right menu, then scroll down the page and choose from a list of exhibit areas for photos of each plane and weapon featured in the museum. Aerospace teachers can use this site for example photos of planes being studied in class, while history teachers can use those same photos in units concerning the evolution of transportation or warfare. This site truly is an interdisciplinary webpage, and can be used to supplement lectures in many classrooms. After introducing this site, allow student pairs, groups, or individuals to explore and find an area of interest. Then extend student learning by asking them to do some research to see what more they can learn about their area of interest and have them create a Google Drawings, reviewed here. Google Drawings allows you to annotate an image with links to videos, text, websites, and more. Not familiar with Google Drawings? Watch an archived OK2Ask session to learn how to use: OK2Ask Google Drawings, here.

This extremely well-organized site from U.C. Berkeley introduces students to the history of life and how it results in today's biodiversity. The site includes two different levels for grades K-4 and 5-12, making this an introduction that can be used in virtually any classroom setting. There is a Teacher Guide with lesson plans, handouts, assessments, related activities and much more. Created with support from the National Science Foundation.

In the Classroom

Introduce this activity with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to show students how to navigate the site. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. This blog creator requires no registration. Enhance student learning and allow pairs or small groups of students to explore Related Activities and share what they learned with their peers using an interactive poster like Marq (formerly Lucidpress), reviewed here. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as Pathbrite, reviewed here.
