Designed for grades K-4 by NASA, this site introduces Earth sensing - observing and mapping the earth from the sky. Clever use of student artwork helps draw attention to the text, which traces the evolution of flight, space travel and satellites, showing how each was used to observe Earth. Students then offer hypotheses about Earth images taken from space.

Chicago's Adler Planetarium offers this interesting introduction to the way in which early cultures interpreted the heavens. There are dozens of examples drawn from as many ancient cultures, and all organized into themes that would have been essential to these civilizations. A set of lesson plans rounds out this intriguing unit.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it for an all-around resource for a unit on astronomy. Take advantage of the free lesson plans offered in addition to the sections that could be used as learning centers by themselves. This is a great resource for an inter-disciplinary lesson about astronomy.

This is one of Life's Little Lessons featuring Daniel Tiger. Use it to help young children "work on feelings about separation and independence, memory skills, developing self-control, and expressing feelings." There are three videos to watch and discuss, as well as resources for classroom use, and resources to share with parents about separation.

In the Classroom

Discover the delightful Daniel Tiger and his friends and family through these videos. Even your youngest nursery school students will be able to relate to the characters, images, and story in these three films. They will probably want to watch them again and again! Parents and students alike will benefit from the resources provided. There is also a Teacher Tips sheet that provides suggestions for helping children adjust to separating from their families for awhile. Be sure to use the suggested free, online book on the Teacher Tips sheet with your students and their parents.

This is the online companion to an exhibit currently running at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Download the Ipix plugin to take the virtual tour of the exhibit, check out the live butterfly webcam, or view quicktime movies of butterflies in action. This is a great online excursion for students who don't have their own butterflies to observe. The videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Take your students on a virtual tour of the butterfly conservatory using an interactive whiteboard or projector.

Here's another great site from San Francisco's Exploratorium. Learn how researchers study the jungle, both on-site and in the laboratory. Users with high-speed connections will enjoy the Quicktime movie interviews with the scientists - further proof that science can be engaging, interesting, even fun. A few resources on this site require Flash, most don't, and there is a lot of information here.

NASA's Mars Participate page for kids offers lots of interactive exploration options and an interactive Mars viewer. Teachers will also find links to more extensive NASA classroom resources on Mars and plans for further explorations. NASA's web resources are huge, and finding suitable materials can sometimes require some experimenting. This site will certainly interest elementary-level explorers.

In the Classroom

You may want to introduce this site using the subject Space Place for Kids at the bottom of the page. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector and show them the All About Mars and the different Mars Rovers (robots). Bookmark the site on classroom computers (or in a lab) to allow students to explore the Adventure Game to Mars. Choose from topics and activities on this site to use in class or at computer centers. Replace paper journals and enhance classroom technology use by asking students to reflect on their learning in blog entries using Penzu, reviewed here. With Penzu you can add images or your own artwork as illustrations.

Satisfy your interest in the weather with Tree House Weather for Kids. Designed for students in grades 5-8, this site covers Seasons, Air Pressure, Clouds, and Rock and Roll Weather (types of storms, of course!). Leave the sound on to have text read as you proceed through each section, or turn off sound to read independently. Explore the small activity section containing quick practice activities for identifying clouds, weather forecasting, and exploring the distance to the sun. Another activity contains weather comics with a template for creating your own weather comic. Be sure to check out the Teacher's Guide for many additional resources and teaching ideas. Your Spanish-speaking students will also benefit from this site, simply click the "Espanol" link near the bottom of the page to view in Spanish. At the time this review was last updated, two of the activities were not working, however all of the content remained on the site.

In the Classroom

This is an excellent site for both in and outside the classroom! Use videos and information from the site to supplement your current resources for teaching weather. Create a link on classroom computers for students to explore on their own. Challenge students to create online, interactive posters, infographics or presentations using a tool such as Genial.ly, reviewed here. Have students create a word cloud of the important terms they learn from this site using a tool such as Word Clouds for Kids, reviewed here, or WordItOut, reviewed here.

Support music education at home and school with the many free resources shared in the Kids Edition of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's website. Visit the educators' portion of the website to find digital teaching activities and music playlists featuring music from around the world. Each playlist includes an engaging downloadable activity packet loaded with fascinating information about the featured topic's countries, musicians, and musical instruments. Explore and learn about the orchestra instruments in the lesson, including downloads that teach about instrument families and an orchestra seating chart. Additional downloads include a crossword puzzle, word search, and drawing activity. Be sure to explore the complete educators' portion of the site to find many lessons correlated to science, social studies, and language arts concepts.

In the Classroom

Share this fantastic site with your school's music teacher, but save it to use with students for a variety of different lessons. For example, incorporate music into your lessons when teaching about worldwide countries, taking advantage of the featured playlists in the educators' section. Engage students with an introductory activity using Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to add sticky notes with students' knowledge of specific instruments, countries, or different kinds of music. As you add information and resources to your lessons, use Wakelet, reviewed here, to create collections to share with students that include videos and websites related to the content taught. Have students show what they know using Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here, to create a website, video, or presentation on their chosen topic. For younger students, work together in groups or as a class to create a music book using Book Creator, reviewed here. Include audio recordings, student drawings, and videos as part of your digital book.

Here's a collection of science lesson plans covering disciplines from geology to earth science, chemistry, and general science. Each includes complete procedures, standards references, and discussion. Some of these lessons use video clips as an integral component, so teachers will want to plan accordingly.

In the Classroom

The lesson plans here are excellent! Choose from many lessons (levels 4-12) to use in class to save you time. All lessons have a summary explaining what you and students will encounter with that lesson. Some example titles are The Ladder of Life where through video and Web-based activities, the students will develop a greater understanding of what DNA does in a cell. Students will be able to assemble DNA parts in order to simulate DNA strands. They will also have the opportunity to experimentally view DNA through an extraction technique included in the lesson. Another is Evolution: Its Effect Throughout Geological Time and the Controversy where students review the basics of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. They use the World Wide Web to explore the various stages of evolution, over geological time, and learn how each organism fits into the evolutionary story. These are just two representatives of how the many lessons are presented.

Try this elementary science page if your curriculum includes the study of air, air pressure, and the effects of temperature on air, buoyancy, and the like. Much of the content is devoted to hot air and helium balloons, but there's plenty of science for the younger set here.

In the Classroom

Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to the study of air, gas, and phases of matter. The site has some short video clips that would be an excellent addition to any lesson on the fore-mentioned. Open the clips for viewing, and show students their lesson in action. This is a great example of a real world use of the knowledge they just attained! Share the site on the class wiki or web page to allow students to review it both in and out of the classroom.
