This is NASA's starting point for kids interested in NASA activities. Introduced in June, 1999, it offers dozens of NASA web resources groups into logical categories. Given the hundreds of pages that NASA has on the web, this page should make it easier for students to find information they can use.

In the Classroom

After introducing the site with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard, allow students to explore on their own then choose a topic of interest for further research. Have older students make a multimedia presentation or create a digital story about their topic using Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here. Younger students could create a digital story around their topic using My Storybook, reviewed here. Post a link to this website for students to share with parents at home.

CNN offers a virtual reality tour of the International Space Station. It's a great way to explore the station's various components and construction. You'll need a computer with a 166 MHz processor or better, and the Cosmo player plug-in for your browser. Depending on the speed of your modem connection, the demo could take 3-5 minutes to load. It's worth the wait.

In the Classroom

After taking this virtual tour with the entire class, set up a link on classroom computers for those who have a high interest in space and space flight.

Although this site is archived, the links are functioning and there is still plenty to see and learn. The folks at NASA offer an on-line collection of explanations about comets, galaxies, and space exploration. Otudents can dig more deeply into the explanations. Attractive images and movement make this an engaging starting point for an outer space discussion.

In the Classroom

After introducing this site on your whiteboard, engage students by forming small groups and asking them to look at the topics under Lithographs (each one has a little explainer text) and choose one to research further. Next, enhance student learning by having the groups develop a multimedia presentation using Genially, reviewed here; allow students to choose the format for their presentation. With all of the formats you can insert maps, surveys, video, audio, and more.

This site is the homepage for a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Based at U.C. Berkeley, this site explains how radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space. Such signals are not known to occur naturally, so a detection would provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology. This site offers software to become part of the project.

In the Classroom

Participation in the project requires downloading software and establishing a username on the site. Check with your administrator to be sure that your school computer will support the program.

Here's a site which offers answers to imponderables such as, "Why is the ocean blue?" The site offers numerous articles of interest. You can join (for a fee), but the articles are available for free. The site is published by the British periodical New Science.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Share the site on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and use it as a springboard for an ethics discussion during science class. Though there are a wide array of articles, some capture and illustrate arguments over the debate of stem cell research, Pluto's classification, and climate change. At the end of a unit, open one of these articles and use the real-world information provided to spark a classroom debate. Students can use the knowledge they have gained, in addition to seeing its practical application. This is a very useful site for science enrichment!
