What is the impact of changes in sea levels? Use this tool to show various effects with different feet of sea level rise. There is plenty of data showing that sea levels have already risen eight inches since 1880. Most people are unaware of the areas of the world that are at risk, though hurricanes may make us temporarily aware. This interactive map gives incredible detail by zooming into neighborhoods and understanding the possible changes that can occur with sea level change. Enter a city, zip code, or click on the US map to begin. Use the slider to change the sea level from 1 to 10 feet. Choose various other data such as social vulnerability, population, income, and property values. The application is based upon two independently written, easily accessible, peer-reviewed papers.
In the Classroom
Use this tool to discuss how climate change is affecting sea level, as well as other weather events that have been in the news. Be sure to talk about energy and how it is produced and why all combustion reactions produce carbon dioxide. Research the composition of the atmosphere and why changes in certain gases can cause such a problem. Be sure to have students check out the validity of different sources and sites for accuracy and statistics and data that backs up the viewpoint. Rather than scare students, discuss ways that everyone in the world can create a greener Earth for tomorrow. Challenge students to research and then create multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Rawpixel offers a massive selection of free images, PNG elements, fonts, and backgrounds curated by the site's graphic designers. Select the Public Domain link to find collections and resources for use with a Creative Commons license. Rawpixel makes it easy to find items using Topics; select the topic link to search collections by trending, popular, or new images. Use the search bar to find specific topics, photos, or boards. Follow the directions to download pictures after creating your free account. Each download also includes attribution information to have when using. Finally, create boards to save images to a collection for later use.
In the Classroom
Include Rawpixel with your other image resources for your professional use and share with students. Be sure to include discussions of proper attribution of images and Creative Commons Licensing. Consider using a curation tool such as Wakelet, reviewed here, or Padlet, reviewed here, to share image resources with students. Ask students to enhance presentations using images and elements found on Rawpixel. For example, when creating presentations on the American Revolution using Google Slides, reviewed here, or Canva Edu, reviewed here, ask students to find a PNG image of a smartphone, then add chat boxes into the phone to depict a conversation between George Washington and one of his generals. Turn your blog in to a PDF book featuring all your blog's entries and comments. This tool works for the following blog tools: WordPress, LiveJournal, and Blogger. Creating the PDF book is simple. Export your blog by following the directions given for each specific type of blog and then upload the file to BlogBooker. All your content and comments are assembled into a high-quality PDF file. Note that this process can take a few minutes or longer depending on the size of your blog. This is a great way to print your BlogBook or make an archive/backup of the blog. It could also be useful for students and educators as a way to save a blog as a portfolio item. At the time of this review WordPress, LiveJournal, and Blogger were all 100% FREE!

Print your BlogBook to share with your class. Use as a way to have an archive or back up of the class blog. Keep the PDF files for use in portfolios to show student work. Challenge students to create their own BlogBook about a subject they are learning in class. All three tools are free and fairly simple to use. Begin by selecting an image from your device, taking a picture with your camera, or choosing an image from the gallery provided by Unsplash, reviewed here. Use Edit Photo's tools to crop images and add filters, frames, annotations, and more. When finished, click export to select a format and image size, then download to your device or copy to paste into a document you choose.
In the Classroom
Because this resource is so easy to use and works right within your browser, it makes it a perfect choice for many different classroom uses. For example, use the simple meme generator with a historical figure to introduce a new social studies unit with humor. Edit images to include on your classroom website to add text and stickers and crop out unwanted portions. Use this tool anytime photos need to be edited for class blogs, wikis, or presentation tools. In primary grades, this tool could be helpful for teachers to use to edit pictures from field trips, science experiments, and more. Share the editing process with younger students using an interactive whiteboard or projector. Edit together! Encourage older students to use this tool on images for projects or presentations. Candy Experiments offers several great experiments to explore concepts such as sink/float, density, and color separation. Everyone loves a science experiment, especially if it involves food! Choose an experiment to find a list of materials, activity procedures, and a short explanation of the science. Some experiments also include a YouTube video demonstrating the experiment. If your district blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable. Be sure to check out the words of caution at the bottom of the list of experiments before attempting to do them.

In the Classroom
Use this collection for some fun science experiments for the classroom. Can't use food in your school? Perform the experiment at home and videotape or give students the directions to perform at home (with parental help). Share the videos on a site such as TeacherTube, reviewed here. View videos of the experiments on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and have students predict results before watching the ending. Have students create their own comics to explain one of the activities using comic-creation tools reviewed here. Some suggested comic creators are Printable Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here, ToonyTool, reviewed here, Make Beliefs Comix, reviewed here. Some explanations are fairly simple. Challenge students to explain concepts more fully with "annotated pictures" using Annotely, reviewed here. This free collection uses satellite imagery to show changes in land use across the Earth since 1984. This landing page explains the time lapse project and showcases a group of Featured Sites using time lapse satellite imagery. Enter a city in the search bar at the top to find data from other areas. Note: Keep in mind that imagery may not be available in all areas since the year 1984. This tool however shows exactly how areas have changed in many key areas such as the Amazon Rainforest, Dubai, and Las Vegas. Look at other natural areas such as the Aral Sea or the Columbia Glacier. This site uses Google Maps and/or the Google Earth browser plugin, so pretest it to be sure it works on the computer(s) you want to use in a classroom.
In the Classroom
Use on an Interactive Whiteboard or projector to see the land use changes in various locations "happen" in an instant. Discuss the reasons for the changes or brainstorm possible reasons. Use this as an introductory activity to various ecology or environmental topics. Research the native plants and animals displaced by human expansion in these locations. What environmental impacts are occurring in these areas? How have other locations changed in response to new uses such as Marcellus shale drilling, mountaintop removal for coal, etc? Discuss the possible changes and search out time lapse images that show changes. Creating online surveys just became easier and quicker using Zoho. Simply use the survey editor to add questions, edit, and modify your survey. Choose from 15 different question types such as multiple choice or more advanced options such as a matrix. Use logic within responses to skip or present questions based on user response. Use social media to share surveys and feedback via links to Twitter, Facebook, and more. Add a QR code on print material if desired to access surveys.
In the Classroom
Copy/paste the link to the poll or use the embed code to place in a wiki, blog, or a site. Be sure that students use the poll appropriately and know that personal information is not acceptable in poll responses. Use polls anywhere to record quick responses to questions. Have students create a poll about their interests and allow time to analyze responses and report findings. Use this site to vote for correct answers in math class, project ideas for science or social studies, social issues in current events, and practically any other subject area. Students should be encouraged to incorporate polls during class presentations. In an elementary math class, collect quick data to show use of graphs. Share the graphs on your projector or interactive whiteboard in "real time." Provide options for students to gain confidence in generating and analyzing statistics they have created. SwifDoo PDF is a free download for Microsoft Operating Systems that offers many tools to edit, merge, compress, and sign PDF documents. Use the PDF editor to add or change text, font, links, and images to documents. Additional features allow you to add passwords to documents and annotate and reply to others within a shared document. Install SwifDoo PDF by selecting the Free Download link and following the prompts to open and install the application. Check the system and hardware requirements information on the site before downloading and installing SwifDoo PDF.
In the Classroom
Download and use SwifDoo PDF for many of your classroom needs. Edit documents to differentiate instruction based on student interests and abilities. If your original document isn't in PDF format, use a conversion tool such as CleverPDF, reviewed here, to convert your file to PDF and begin using SwifDoo. Use the annotation feature as a collaborative tool for you and your students. For example, add feedback to a student document as an annotation and allow them to respond on the same document. Share the same feature with students working on collaborative projects as a tool for sharing ideas within a single document. Storyset provides free, customizable illustrations that offer the option of adding animation. Use the search bar or tags to find content (be sure to look at the education tag to find classroom images). Next, hover over the images to download as they are shown. Click to open images to customize the color and add or remove objects. Choose the link to animate to find additional options for animating objects found in the image. When finished, use the export link to download the animated images as GIFs or videos. Illustrations are available to download as SVG or PNG files. Be sure to include proper attribution when using any illustrations from the site.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site for professional use and share it with students whenever using images for class projects and assignments. Be sure to discuss how to use and attribute images within their work properly. Use these images on your class web page, in newsletters, or in slide presentations. Many of the images also work well for use with creative writing projects. Before sharing this video, ask students to create their own top 5 list of ways humans are impacting the environment. Take advantage of time-stamp links to share specific portions of the video with students. Since the narrator speaks so quickly, you may want to use a tool like Vibby, reviewed here, to pause the video and discuss what was said, and then enhance student learning by asking students to respond to a prompt or question right on the video! Have students propose solutions to the problems mentioned in the video and share in a blog. Compare and contrast two images with JuxtaposeJS photo slider, no registration required. Begin with links to your two images, JuxtaposeJS recommends using two pictures of the same size. Add labels and photo credits and choose from personalization options. Once uploaded, use the slider bar to adjust the viewing portions of the two images. Embed your finished image using the code provided after publication.
In the Classroom
Use JuxtaposeJS to highlight then and now images of any location or building. Compare current cities to images taken many years ago. Compare and contrast pictures of major war battles to how they look in the present. Highlight changes in photographs over time. Compare and contrast changes in plants or animals. It may take some practice getting images to align properly; however, it is worth the time to create the visual presentation provided by this tool. Upload finished images to your class or student's websites. FigJam is an online collaborative whiteboard with many built-in versatile tools for classroom use. The whiteboard offers infinite space to add templates, drawings, and areas for conversations and projects. In addition, interactive elements allow members to react to ideas with emojis, high-fives, and stamps. Create an account to begin using FigJam and access all of its features. Create your FigJam board by selecting the purple "+FigJam Board" link near the top of the home page. Add features to your whiteboard by choosing from the many options available, including drawing and writing tools, a timer, and an AI generator to create items such as timelines and mindmaps. Share your FigJam board with others by copying the link, sending an email, or copying the embed code onto a webpage.
In the Classroom
Use FigJam in many different ways to engage learners and support classroom instruction. Google Jamboard, reviewed here is a similar but less robust tool than FigJam and will not be supported after December 31, 2024. Migrate your current Jamboards into FigJam. This link will take you to the directions for importing your Jamboards to FigJam. When working in FigJam, use sticky notes as a collaborative activity to brainstorm ideas and information as a class. Use the drawing tools and ask students to label places, parts of plants, and more. Use FigJam templates to create all-about-me activities, such as class check-in and exit ticket activities, Frayer Model activities, and much more. In the Classroom
Share this crossword on your interactive whiteboard to introduce your biome unit and assess prior knowledge. Have students use the words from the puzzle and find online images to use as examples of each definition. Ask students to create a Google Drawings, reviewed here, using their images. Find information for backyard wildlife adventurers at this free site! View information on hunting and trapping, backyard habitats, and more. Be sure to check out the Discover Nature tab to view the Teacher Portal and for recipes using animals and plants common to Missouri. (If you live in an entirely different area, you can compare what Missouri has with what you have!) Cick the Wild Life tab at the to to browse through Field Guides organized by species group. There are video clips. Some are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

Use this site when discussing ecology, wildlife, or nature in general. View the Outdoor Recreation and Wildlife Cameras links under the Discover tab for great ideas to get out into nature or view wildlife. Use a webcam for students to practice scientific observation! Choose a recipe from the Cooking link to create and share with others. Give students an opportunity to look at the material around the site and share what they find with others in the class. Challenge students to research whales further and learn more about their migrations and interactions as a unit. Have students use Vibby, reviewed here, to grab more information from other YouTube videos to share with the class about whale behavior. Have students create maps using Zeemaps, reviewed here, to show locations of whales around the world and their migration patterns. Teacher's Buddy offers AI tools just for teachers. The free plan includes ten tools that create lesson plans, generate stories and poems, and adapt coursework for neurodiverse students. After creating an account, begin using Teacher's Buddy by creating a new workspace for your activities. Select an age group and choose from the available tools. Follow the directions to provide the topic and context, and connect to your Google Drive to upload documents if desired. When finished, edit the content as you wish, then save the document to your Google Drive or share using the provided link. Learn more about the different features of Teacher's Buddy by watching the tutorial videos shared on the site. Always verify the accuracy of content generated by AI before using it.

Tableizer is a "cool tool" for creating HTML code to show spreadsheet data in table format. No one wants to learn how to write HTML (web page code) to make tables, but adding a table to your blog is sometimes a must to line up information into columns. Copy and paste your cells from Excel, Calc, or other spreadsheets into the box provided. Choose options such as font size and style and color. Click the Tableize it! button to view the HTML code along with a preview of the results. Copy and paste the HTML code into any web page you create, such as your blog or wiki. The best part: no registration is required.
