The Challenger Center provides lessons and resources dedicated to continuing the work of the Challenger mission and crew after the shuttle tragedy in 1986. Select the STEM Resources link to find lessons sorted by grade levels. These lessons include the lost lessons of Christa McAuliffe that were supposed to take place during her time in space. Other lessons take students on explorations of space travel through meal planning, finding coordinates, and locating and rescuing a lost teammate.
In the Classroom
Add the Challenger Center to your resources for teaching about outer space. As you begin your unit, create a Padlet, reviewed here, to organize and share information learned. Have students make flashcards and quizzes to review information learned using a site like Flashcard Stash, reviewed here. As a culminating project, have students create explainer videos of any concept using Clipchamp, reviewed here.

Prepare to be amazed by the incredible features found on this interactive map of the Milky Way created with images taken during space missions. Take full advantage of the site by viewing the tutorial video explanations (at the top far right menu) of the many features included. View different portions of the interactive by choosing the random option or select from the included target list to see targets by class such as galaxies or nebulae. Additional options allow you to zoom in and out when viewing images. The video tutorials reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

If you teach astronomy be sure to bookmark this site for easy reference at any time. Make it easy for students to find bookmarked sites like this by creating a Padlet, reviewed here, with all of your shared resources. Create columns in your Padlet to organize resources by type or topic. For example, create columns for interactives like this site, video explainers, and informative websites. Use the share button included on this site to share specific regions or resources with students for use in class or research. As students learn about different star formations, have them modify their technology use and enhance their learning as they create infographics using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, to describe and share facts about their research. As a final project, have students redefine their technology use and extend their learning by including their infographic in a multimedia presentation as an alternative to a typical research paper. San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is one of the United States' iconic landmarks. It's come to symbolize the vitality of the US West Coast and of the building projects that sprang from the later years of the Great Depression. There are both individual photographs, relevant documents, and a PowerPoint presentation overview of the construction of the Golden Gate. The articles accompanying the photos include extensive data about the structure and the challenges in accomplishing the construction.

The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English.

WordWanderer is a fascinating experimental visual tool that seeks to improve your experience with a text. See how it works by selecting from texts included in the dropdown box or copy and paste the text of your choosing. After making a selection, click the "wander" icon to use the tool. Hover your cursor over any of the words to highlight additional words connected to the original. Click on a word to view a list of uses of that word within the text. Select words and draw lines to view connections within the text. Use the options box to select types of speech to include in your visual or to hide common words. Be sure to look at the help box to understand the three different views offered within the WordWanderer interface.
In the Classroom
Use WordWanderer to explore and introduce many different types of text. For example, paste in a portion of a novel or chapter from a science or social studies text to share with students. Use the different features to explore connections between words and discuss vocabulary. Ask students to paste text from their work into this tool as a means for exploring their work in depth. Ask questions such as how often some words appear, can you find different adjectives, or did you use the same one too often? Ideogram uses artificial intelligence to generate images from text. Explore images created by Ideogram users by scrolling through the home page and selecting any image to view the prompt used to create it. Additional links include options to save images as favorites, remix them, or retry creating them. Free accounts allow you to make up to 25 images daily. Enter your prompt in the chat bar and choose from options for size, privacy, and image style. Each prompt generates four images. Open any image and right-click to save it on your device.
In the Classroom
Ideogram is an excellent tool for creating AI-generated images and a valuable resource for learning how to create effective prompts. Scroll through the home page to find images of interest, then open the picture to view the prompt used to make it. Teach students how to write descriptive sentences by creating AI-generated images; students quickly learn how to add specific details to create a desired output. Use Ideogram to engage students in creative writing projects by generating images based on anything their imaginations share. Include AI-generated images in your classroom newsletter, website, or worksheets as an easy resource for adding pictures without spending much time searching for the right photograph. Share this site with students to include images in multimedia projects, such as those created using Sway, reviewed here or edublogs, reviewed here. The U.S. Department of State designed this interactive game to help ESL/ELL learners to learn American English. However, many non-ESL/ELL students could greatly benefit (and enjoy) this highly interactive experience and look at U.S. culture. Download Unity Player to begin. Registration is free, but does require an email address. Begin your mission with Trace, a teen back in time from the year 2045. Help Trace return to his regular time by completing several challenges. Trace must follow directions (called objectives) on each screen. He travels to 8 separate locations around the U.S. Learn about entrepreneurship, community activism, empowering women, science and innovation, environmental conservation, and conflict resolution. Travel to Kansas, New Orleans, the Grand Canyon, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Complete 28 practice activities. You will also find 4 multi-player practice challenges, 7 graphic novels for extension activities, and an American English dictionary integration activity. The game is so involved, that you will not even realize that you are also learning English.
In the Classroom
This site offers a window on American culture that you can use in comparing cultures. It is a great way to engage ESL/ELL teens as they practice English skills. Since the State Department created it, an AP Civics or Government class might even want to critique or discuss its portrayal of U.S. culture. Have ESL/ELL students work on individual laptops and explore this site alone or with a partner. Provide this link for students to access both in and out of the classroom. Challenge your students to collaboratively write the dialogue for an additional visit Trace might make to a community near you using Google Docs/Drive reviewed here. Collect and share data about mosquitos as part of a national project by participating in the Invasive Mosquito Project. This project is gathering data on the number and types of mosquitoes found around the country and needs the help of students, teachers, and anyone interested in participating. In addition to this research project, the site offers a collection of resources for teachers including lessons for collecting information, recognizing mosquito types, and mosquito facts. Submit your collected data using the online form found on the site.
In the Classroom
The Invasive Mosquito Project is an excellent way to teach scientific process and data gathering through real-world techniques. Take advantage of the free lessons found on the site to teach your students how to properly collect and share data before actually following procedures for participating in the project. As students learn to collect data and take images, use Wakelet, reviewed here, to organize and share their work and curate online information. As students become more involved with the project ask them to share information using Google My Maps, reviewed here. Google My Maps offers tools for creating a virtual field trip across a path created by students.

In the Classroom
Use Wow in the World podcasts to introduce current events and technology innovations to your students. Listen together, or create a link to the podcast on classroom computers. Instead of sharing a written response to information learned on the podcast, have cooperative learning groups create their own podcasts demonstrating their understanding of one of the concepts. Use a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here.
