This workshop will equip you with the essential knowledge and strategies you need to effectively teach copyright concepts to your students. Use this free interactive mapping site to make additions to Google Maps, incorporating other data and maps with them. Add topographic maps and spatial or environmental data. This is an easy tool for adding symbols and icons or for adding a drawing on a Google map. Find many of the simple tools along the top of the map. You can do something as simple as adding text labels or shading a region. Add data to the map using the tools below the map. Create a mashup of KML, GPX (easily imported from Garmin), WMS and GEORSS data sources. This video explains many of the features of Geokov. Please note this video is hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then it may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Take a virtual field trip through the map maker. Explore landforms and other terrain features from Google Earth and topographic maps. Easily create maps for field trips, presentations, classroom activities and more. Create a shade relief topographic map of any region. Doing an environmental study of an area or region? Find the region in this tool first and add the necessary information for classroom discussion or presentation. Use one of the many TeachersFirst Presentation Tools to present information learned. In the Classroom
Use this resource to plan a trip to the park. Or, create a virtual field trip by designating specific places on the website that students have to visit. Have students locate different buildings, art, and trees in the park. It could be a great way to do a virtual leaf collection (in this case - tree collection) with the site's tree database. Have students find at least ten different trees and then create a presentation providing different information about those trees, including their locations in the park. Assign small groups to explore one facet of this site and create a multimedia presentation using one of many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. After selecting a book, read a summary, including the copyright date, author(s), and licensing information. Then, to access any text, select the "Read More" link that provides additional information and links to the available formats. Formats available include PDF, ebook, and online availability.
In the Classroom
Bookmark and save this website as a resource for finding supplemental materials for your classroom and professional development information for personal use. For example, if you teach algebra, use the search feature to find introductory and prealgebra textbooks to reinforce concepts to students differently than your current teaching materials. For students who need enrichment material, take advantage of algebra 2 books to provide differentiated instruction to meet their learning needs. This resource would be ideal to use in a remote learning situation. Consider curating this site along with other open education resources (OER) using Wakelet, reviewed here. Create a collection in Wakelet of your OER resources and share it with colleagues as a professional resource.

Episodes feature conversations with National Geographic photographers, explorers, and scientists with hosts Peter Gwyn and Amy Briggs. Podcasts run from approximately thirty to forty-five minutes and are available on most podcast-hosting platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and iHeartRadio.
In the Classroom
Incorporate relevant podcasts into classroom lessons to enhance learning and engage student interest. For example, have students listen to the podcast of how Anne Frank's Diary survived when reading the Diary of Anne Frank or learning about the holocaust or include A Skeptic's Guide to Loving Bats during your studies of animals. This five-minute video shares information on the specific parts of a food chain including producers and consumers and their role in the food chain. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on food chains on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Include a link to the video on your class website for students to view at home. Take a walk outside of your classroom to look for different members of food chains and take pictures. Have students create an annotated image describing the animal's role in the food chain by adding text boxes and related links using a tool such as Image Annotator, reviewed here. Consider TinyWow as a versatile resource to assist you with editing, creating, and sharing files and documents of any kind, similar to a Swiss Army Knife. PDF tools allow you to merge, split, compress, and convert PDF documents to different formats. Use the video tools to resize and compress videos, change format, and trim videos. Use TinyWow's image tools to remove backgrounds, create artificial intelligence (AI) images, remove objects from images, and much more. Follow the directions to upload files, convert them, and then download them to your device. Although registration isn't required, TinyWow offers the option to create an account to save your work; otherwise, files are deleted after an hour.

TinyWow is perfect for many different classroom uses, and since it doesn't require registration, it provides an excellent resource for use by you and your students. Use the image tools to remove unwanted objects from classroom photos, create profile images of students for use on student projects, or to create AI images for use with creative writing projects. This course includes eighteen lessons that share features found on Book Creator, such as importing media, using the camera, and using templates. The final activity is a twenty-question quiz. Complete sixteen or more questions correctly to receive a digital badge and printable certificate of completion. The course takes approximately two hours to complete.

Use this resource to help your students learn more about local fish and the effects of human behavior on aquatic life. Have students use a fish to tell its own story with the additional assistance of a tool like Blabberize, reviewed here, where you can make your fish "talk!" Use in environmental science courses to help students understand sustainability and conservation. Try using it as part of practice for Envirothon competitions. Perhaps even start a wildlife club and use this site to prepare for a field trip of fishing.
