Students, teachers, and parents can turn to this excellent resource for comprehensive help with science fair projects. At the top of the page is a video "Operation Build It." The first eight minutes are mostly about Home Depot's Kids workshops, but starting about 8:57 the video gets into students creating a workshop at home - tools they will need, safety ideas, and spaces to work. The rest of the video is mostly about kits that can be provided by Home Depot. Next, explore project Ideas which are categorized by Scientific and Engineering Ideas. Scientific Sreps include a brief explanation for each step and planning sheets for Elementary and Secondary students. finally there is the Presentation section with an example and completed directions and a materials list. Scroll down the page to explore different projects by year, Also, find resource on how to organize a science fair, and how to get parents involved in the process.

In the Classroom

As an introduction, show parts of the video to the class, use Reclipped, reviewed here, to show just the part you want. For interested students, you may want to contact your local Home Depot to see if they offer the Saturday workshops for kids.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Students can play an interactive Bone-Yahtzee game, or participate in a question/answer page. The Teacher's Corner contains two printable worksheets that can be used to guide students through the site content. Some sections are still in progress, but there is still a considerable amount of information to explore.

Add this simple and concise resource to a classroom unit on the science of light. Students can discover answers to questions like "Why is the sky blue?" and "How does a magnifying glass make things look bigger?" In addition to optical basics, the site provides brief information about science and engineering careers, and links to other teaching and learning resources. Follow the link to A Gentle Introduction to Optical Design for a slightly more technical presentation, appropriate for older, more advanced students.

Although this site is a companion to a PBS series by the same name, many of the activities can be used independently to tap into your students deductive reasoning abilities. Prowl through the rooms of a virtual house to investigate clues and determine its age; open a time capsule to examine its contents and decide when it was originally buried; and learn about the many techniques used by historical sleuths, including forensic anthropology, DNA analysis, timber dating, and document examination. Some very creative interdisciplinary connections between science and historical research can be drawn from the resources on this site. Let your imagination run with this one!

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered on this site. Some can actually be used for other subjects beyond history - for example, there is a lesson on how to interview eye-witnesses that would be useful in a writing or English class. There are also videos of the show that can pertain to a particular unit. A few exist on the civil war that would be great to play during a US history course to add more interest and intrigue to the study of the war. Save this site as a favorite to allow for easy retrieval of lesson plans and activities!

Astronomical history is about to happen! On June 8, 2004 the planet Venus will cross the face of the sun, an event that has not occurred since 1882. Tune into this site to view a live Internet webcast of the transit and an interactive timeline detailing Venus transits throughout history (only six have occurred since the invention of the telescope in the 1600s). Basic information on what a transit it, why it is important, and how to see it is also provided. Some areas of this resource require Flash, however there is plenty of important information to learn from that doesn't.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered within this site in the Teachers Guide! The site can be used for both history and science classrooms. Historians will appreciate the informative timelines and introspective look back, while the content itself is clearly science oriented. Life science teachers can find a wide variety of information about many aspects of the natural world in this well-organized site. Topics include geology, plants, fungi, animals, and naming/classifying living things. A section on "tools" provides guidance in selecting the proper items for successful nature study (i.e., field guides, binoculars, notebooks). Most importantly, all of the information is geared toward understanding nature in your own backyard (or schoolyard!). Encourage your students to check out the link to 101 Nature-Oriented Things to Do for some great science-based ideas on how to fill those long summer days.

Turn every student's favorite class distraction into a learning opportunity with this lesson that takes a scientific look at the common paper airplane. Instructions on how to properly fold an airplane are provided (not that your students will need those!), but then the challenge begins. Structural adjustments to increase performance are discussed, the function of the paper in the construction process is examined, and basic concepts of flight are explained. Pair this activity with a study of the Wright Brothers and the history of flight, or with an environmental lesson on paper recycling.

In the Classroom

This site would be great for a physics unit discussing the aerodynamics of flight. Have a team competition as students use the site on an interactive whiteboard and try to create the best paper planes they can - through consideration of scientific processes that go into flight. This is a fun activity that allows students to practically apply concepts and have some fun.

Introduce your students to the microbial worlds of bacteria, fungi, and viruses with this site that provides entertaining background information, ideas for classroom experiments, and a collection of "Microbes in the News" articles. Find out when hands should be washed and what happens when they are not! Interested students can even explore a "Careers" link that offers interviews with experts in the field, advice on finding a mentor, and tips on how to become a microbiologist. Available in English and Spanish.

In the Classroom

Use the videos on this site as a supplement to a lecture on microbes. One video that would be great, "E. Coli Animation," shows the growth and reproduction of e.coli in a quick YouTube clip. Not all school internet systems allow for access to YouTube, so make sure to check your school's policies before use. If it does work, some of these videos do a great job of detailing specific microbes and their life-cycles. Definitely a lot more interesting and fun for students to watch than reading the same information out of a textbook!
