The site presents each of these in some detail, with an eye toward giving science teachers the ability to develop model-based teaching approaches for other topics. Billed as a virtual museum, the site is divided into "wings." There is an enormous amount of information on this site! The History "wing" includes biographies of the Wright Brothers, information about the history of flight and some little known facts in an area called "aviation's attic." Along the side are links to music files with music of the early 1900s such as the Wrights might have listened to. The Adventure "wing" looks at models of airplanes and the science of flight, and includes more music files. The "Information Desk" includes news about local Dayton, Ohio commemorations of the centennial of flight. No lesson plans and no areas specifically for educators, but lots of facts and pictures spread out all over the site.
In the Classroom
Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a lesson on the Wright Brothers and their impact on flight. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Assign each group a "wing" or subsection to read and research with the intent being for them to present their findings to their peers. Enhance learning by having students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows you to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report that their classmates know virtually nothing about. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Pikwizard, reviewed here. There's a variety of information on tigers available from this Canadian site dedicated to preserving tigers and their habitats. The text includes well-illustrated descriptions of various tiger subspecies and the countries in which they live. Other areas of the site are still "under construction." This one could be used at a variety of grade levels. This is a great site to learn about tigers and their plight despite the fact that the video clips say "coming soon."

Turn a unit on space into something unforgettable with this amazing site that explores infrared astronomy and brings it back to earth. Start by learning how to navigate within the site by clicking on the "help" tool. (It's quite useful for first-time visitors!) Then start exploring the offerings that include cosmic games, galleries of outstanding infrared educational videos and images, classroom activities, and an "ask an astronomer" link. An infrared tutorial provides excellent background information about infrared waves. Students can visit the Infrared Zoo to literally "see" the difference between warm and cold-blooded animals, find out if people glow in the dark, participate in a variety of interactive on-line activities, and learn about the connection between infrared waves and astronomy.

Conserving the habitats of birds is an international concern. This United Kingdom site (RSPB) examines various conservation issues, including the habitats for birds. Most of the focus is on the UK; however, there are more than a few links to international efforts, such as the Albatross Task Force. This page is for the Resources for Teachers; however, the main site has a variety of searchable databases as well as these activities on the issues facing different species of birds. Check out their free lessons, including the ones on TES (the link is under the Activity Sheets). Finally, don't forget to look at the For Kids and For Families; you might find something you can adapt for your classroom or online learning.
In the Classroom
There is a lot to explore here. You could start by engaging students with one of the activities on this page, then go to the home page and briefly look at the articles listed there, or go to the Birds and wildlife tab and have students choose something of interest. Have small groups divide up the articles to read and investigate. Then have students with the same article meet to become the expert on that topic (in cooperative learning, this is known as Jigsaw). Have each student in the Jigsaw group create an Awesome ScreenShot, reviewed here, where they can make digital notes with lines, text, or shapes. Here's a site that documents the achievements of female physicians while also providing lesson plans and information that will show students (at all levels) how physicians do their work. The biographies of women physicians - some dating back into the 19th century - are probably the strongest section of this site, but the lesson plans are also well worth a look. This site could be used in history, career planning, science, or women's history studies. The activities come in text or Flash, and all the other information is definately worth your time.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plans offered in this site! There is also a recommended book list which could be a great addition to a classroom reading list, or as a list students can choose from for a book report. If you'd like to incorporate elements of the history of aviation into a unit on science or history, this site's nice collection of features on significant aviation history events could be useful. There's a nice selection of items that spread over the years from the 1920s through the present. There could be more depth, but the essential information is presented well.
In the Classroom
Each of the individual web explorations could easily be used to introduce separate units within a history class. When applicable, select the exploration you would like students to work on and save it as a favorite on classroom computers. Have students go through the information and make a quick and small poster to show what they have learned. We recommend an online poster creator such as Padlet, reviewed here. The site offers information commonly left out of textbooks, but still relevant enough to apply to the Standards of Learning. Nothing fancy about this site, which offers a surprisingly digestible set of comparisons of the distances from here to there in the cosmos. The author abandons scientific notation in favor of long strings of zeros in the numbers, and it has the intended effect. The images, of course, are of the sort that NASA does best.

Created by a physics teacher, this site offers a collection of webquest-like and similar interactive activities that help explain topics typically found in a physics curriculum. As with any such collection, the quality of the resources varies, but you'll likely find one or more that fit nicely with your own curriculum.
In the Classroom
While not technically a webquest, this site has a lot of extension activities that could be used at the end of a lesson or as a review before a new one.
