While many portions of this site are directed towards planning visits to the museum, the Historical Perspective section outlines many key developments in the history of nuclear power. With information on Marie Curie, Nuclear Non-proliferation, the Manhattan Project, and a number of other key moments in the history of nuclear science, this site is a helpful resource for science research.
In the Classroom
Possibly the most interesting aspect of this site is the information they have on the Manhattan Project. Access the article via the "History articles," found after searching through the "Online exhibits" section. The article is lengthy but extremely informative and interesting. Separate the article into parts, assigning the separate parts to pairs or cooperative learning groups. Have the class put together a digital book of the history, with students creating their own individual pages from their sections. While it may seem a bit disjointed at first, the students will pick up a lot of the key details and the results will be really entertaining when the class reads it together over the interactive whiteboard or projector. This site presents teachers with a searchable index of natural sciences resources contained within the museum's site. Scroll down the page and click Resources for Learning. You can browse the web-sites, activities, and experiments by sub-topic, grade level, or resource type. Current subtopics include anthropology, astronomy, biology, earth science, and paleontology. Special collection exhibits present theme-based activities that cover additional topics and change occasionally. Be sure to check out the the Past Exhibitions for topics such as Biodiversity, Antarctica, and deep sea explorations, and much more. This is a great site for sorting out all the wonderful resources the museum has to offer. There are over 1,000 resources currently available on countless subjects.
In the Classroom
When starting a new unit in social studies or science, take a minute to search the resources available at this website. Consider allowing students, individuals, pairs, or groups, to explore the Exibitions for areas of interest and enhance their learning by having them create a multimedia presentation for their peers using Gennially, reviewed here. If you haven't visited this Smithsonian page for natural science for education in a while, you're in for a wonderful surprise! It provides stellar resources for life and Earth science topics. Scroll down the landing page and click Search Teaching Resources to find a collection of over 300 activities, videos, and literacy resources for grades K-12. Be sure to click the Menu on the left and scroll down to your topic. The first topic is Earth Science. Designed by the Museum of Natural History, this site provides dynamic live and archived webinars, Digital School Programs, Science How Webcast Archives about everything Earth science like Rocks and Mining, Gems and Minerals, Volcanoes and Plate Tectonics, and the Solar System. Plus, the science categories of Life Science, Paleontology, and Social Studies. Don't forget to go to the Exhibits on the top menu and see the virtual exhibit and information and images about exhibits on each floor.
In the Classroom
Be sure to give yourself sufficient time to investigate this site for the topic you are looking for. Once you find the resources you want to use, you may want to introduce the subject with a video. From there, open the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector, and use the Exhibits as a guide to a lecture on one of the many aspects of your topic. While it's mostly text, this site would be a great introduction for a student who is already curious about inventors, scientists, or the universe. Here's the latest in the Exploratorium's series on the physics of sports. The science of hockey includes information on the physics of skating, the materials used in the game equipment, and the reaction times required to stop a puck moving at 90 miles per hour. There's lots of great exploring in this one.
In the Classroom
This is the perfect site to use to extend student learning about force and motion while relating them to real-world activities. Break students into small groups to start exploring the different sections. You may want all groups to start with "The Ice" as suggested, and then you can assign or have student groups choose to investigate the other sections. As students investigate the sections they should keep track of what they are learning either by taking notes using a digital tool such as Memo Notepad, reviewed here (tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers), or organizing information into a concept map like TUZZit, reviewed here. Once completed challenge students to share their findings with the rest of the groups using an infographic creator such as Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here. This Canadian site is just what the bear buffs need - an introduction to the habitat and lifestyle of North America's most famous bears. There's a large "bear basics" section, along with details on staying safe when sharing space with grizzly bears. But alas, there are very few photos.

During a class on environmental conservation, have students open this site on their individual computers. Looking at the site, what do they think would be the most beneficial actions to take to conserve land for bears? Use this site as a launchpad for a discussion on human-animal interaction, and the affect humans have had on their habitat. Here's a site that elementary teachers will like because of its great images, and secondary teachers will find useful for it's detailed explanations of the planets in the solar system. Users with high-speed connections can also view animations of many of the planets. You can also read some of the journals about Apollo 13 that gave a factual basis to the popular movie. Note: We're listing this one despite the fact that it launches annoying popup windows. Ignore them.

This section of a larger site offers details on the journals, the specifications, and the reconstruction of the original Wright flyer. History and physics teachers alike will enjoy this one.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered! There are also games that teachers can either print out and use as quick review activities or as a learning center or station. If using as a learning station, save the site as a favorite and have kids peruse it during a unit on Flight, the evolution of transportation or the Industrial Growth of the early 20th century.

These could make great classroom decorations, and the lesson materials are thorough and grade-specific. Try this one on students interested in the physics of flight or a career in aviation.
