The Exploratorium's climate change site is a data analysis goldmine. There are dozens of examples of how the earth's climate has or has not shifted over the past 100 years, and most of these have detailed graphs illustrating the data. Middle and high school teachers will find this one a great tool for illustrating both the science and the math behind the efforts to monitor the earth's climate.

This is an extensive collection of multi-media physics lessons that are both instructional and entertaining. These lessons cover a wide range of topics using Flash and (optionally) short Quicktime movies. There are lots of instructional possibilities here.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of these free lesson plans, for any unit in a physics class. Search the site to find the appropriate lesson tools, and bring them up on an interactive whiteboard or projector. A lot of the activities can be used for a class activity, or you could also break students up into cooperative learning groups and have them complete them seperately. Make sure to post this site on your teacher web page to allow students to access it both in and out of the classroom for review.

Here's a nifty tool that calculates the measurements you'll need for an exact scale model of the solar system. Just enter the size of the Sun and the page calculates everything else. Because of the vast size differences involved, it may be difficult to create a model in a small space, but just comparing the numbers can be instructive.

In the Classroom

Those teaching space or earth science will find this one a great tool for developing models and comparisons.

This site from San Francisco's Exploratorium chronicles the journey of a team of scientists in 2001 and from McMurdo sound to the South Pole. There is also a link to Ice Stories from 2007-2008. Study topics included everything from global warming to continental drift, and there are lots of reports and images to prove it. Even though this site is a bit dated, it still contains a lot of information to discover. This would be a nice background site for an Antarctica unit. Though the videos require Quick Time, there is plenty of information on this site to make your visit worthwhile!

In the Classroom

Share this information with your students to use for research projects. Have your students create a Piktochart AI Infographic Maker, reviewed here to show the difference in global warming from the present to 16 years ago!

While it covers all aspects of American involvement with nuclear activities, this site's coverage of the history of atomic investigation will be particularly attractive to students and teachers. There is a timeline on the history of atomic energy, and the teacher's section includes several activities built on the effort to build the first atomic bomb. There's a lot of content in this site that is too advanced for secondary students, but creative teachers will find lots of opportunities here.

In the Classroom

Save this site in your favorites on your class computers and use it as a point of reference for students working on research projects or papers. The information is reliable and plentiful, spanning all issues of atomic energy - from the Manhattan Project to Nuclear Facilities, this site has it all. It is a little advanced, but science and history teachers in the upper levels of high school will appreciate the resources this site has to offer.
