A learning bento is a creative project that showcases a student's understanding of a topic or a book using various objects and media. In this workshop, you will learn how to use learning bentos as summative assessments for your students by exploring examples and learning to design your own. You'll also learn how to use this assessment strategy to support the needs of diverse learners. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Collaborate on potential uses for learning bentos with other participants; 2. Design and create a learning bento project exemplar; and 3. Reflect on the benefits and challenges of using learning bentos as summative assessments. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Certify'em is an add-on to Google Forms that automatically generates personalized certificates. Follow the instructions to install and authorize the add-on before using it. After installation, personalize Certify'em within any form to create a certificate upon completion of a minimum score. Free accounts allow members to make their templates or choose from those shared on the site. Your Certify'em account also maintains a record of all exam attempts.
In the Classroom
Certify'em is an excellent addition to every Google Forms members' toolbox. Create and share certificates with students for successful completion of quizzes and tests. Use Certify'em as a means for differentiating instruction by allowing students to take a pre-assessment test before starting a new unit. If they obtain a certificate, offer an alternative extended learning activity. This very simple site offers a look at each state flag with information on when it was admitted to the union. Scroll down the page of alphabetized states to view your flag of choice, and information about the origins of the state flag appears along with the flag's image. Along with each state flag, a link will take you to that states government home page or a fact filled page about the flag. Be sure students don't scroll beyond the flags. At the bottom of the page are news articles under "Around the Web."

Unsplash, the amazing site for finding free, high-quality images, has curated several collections of photos for use in educational settings. Topics include health, nature, politics and current events, and much more. Browse through any collection to find and download images. Although attribution isn't required, it is encouraged. Include the provided attribution text when using images for any project. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to save images and create and share collections.
In the Classroom
Use images from Unsplash as creative writing prompts. Have students create a multimedia presentation using Presentious, reviewed here. This site allows you to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced) and then narrate it as a news report. Learn a Little and Have Some Fun! Idaho's government website for kids offers facts, information, and history about the state. Capital Building Trivia offers an extensive history about their capital building including construction dates, materials used (four types of marble among them), and estimated replacement cost in today's dollars. The School Report Resources section contains all the vital state information such as the state seal, motto, flag, population statistics, and more. Be sure to check out all of the information about the famous Idaho state potatoes included in this section. At the time of this review, one of the links on the "Student Links" page, was no longer active.
In the Classroom
Have students use a tool such as Padlet (reviewed here) to create an online bulletin board to use to display information they learn about Idaho. Share this site with students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector). In the Classroom
This site is a great addition to any world language, history, music, English, or science class. Use the oral history section to hear stories from Holocaust survivors. Listen to accents from around the world. Have you ever wanted to know what a cicada sounds like? Use the recordings from the nature and environment section. Science and music teachers can use the site to show how sound waves look. Use the site to demonstrate how to create an oral history. Then have cooperative learning groups create podcasts demonstrating their understanding of a particular topic you are studying. Use a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here). In world language classes, have students explore locations to learn more about the sound of that country. EZVid is a video screencasting tool that captures everything that appears on your Windows computer screen. Once recorded, you can edit videos, add voice, add text, draw directly on the screen image, or control playback speed. Be sure to watch the video tutorial for all features. Upload finished videos directly to YouTube. Once uploaded, share using social networking links. At the time of this review, this tool was not compatible with a MAC. The website does offer some suggestions to MAC users (such as using Bootcamp). If your school blocks YouTube, you will not be able to use this site while at school.

Read this article from Learning for Justice to understand the misconceptions in comparing Dia de los Muertos with Halloween. Find links to articles and activities to help you further understand the historical and cultural differences between the two holidays. The first link is a recipe for making sugar skulls (calaveras de azucar). Another link from Edsitement, reviewed here, has two videos. The first one is a symphony orchestra performing
Camille Saint-Saens's "Danse Macabre", and the second video has subtitles to explain what is happening in the video; this second video will help students to visualize the Day of the Dead holiday. Finally, there is one other link to explore, which is connected to the words "a celebration of life ;" it would be an excellent site for students to use for researching different holiday customs.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this article for use during your fall festivals activities or cultural diversity lessons and while explaining the difference between Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. Show the video on Edsitement, reviewed here, which shows celebrations of Dia de los Muertos, as an introduction to the class. Enhance learning by asking students what they observed and document this on a two-column Padlet, reviewed here, with one column labeled Dia de los Muertos and the other Halloween. Take advantage of the other links on this site by challenging students to research the two holidays and continue with the Padlet comparison. MSN Kids features content and search features geared toward elementary and middle-school aged kids. In addition to news stories around the world of interest to kids, the site also includes crafts and videos that appeal to students. Use the links to different categories including animals, science and tech, and more to narrow down features. One very nice feature for classrooms is that this site does not include any advertising or sponsored content.
In the Classroom
Set the home page on classroom computers to MSN Kids for students to explore and learn about current events around the world. Have students choose an article and use it as a basis for a research project. Challenge students to create an infographic using Canva, reviewed here, to share information learned from the site. Diffit is a tool that helps teachers differentiate lessons using any text, article, or web page. To use Diffit, you need to create a free account. Then, select one of three options: Literally Anything, An Article (or URL), or Any Text or Excerpt. Then, choose the approximate reading level you want for the differentiated materials. After entering all the necessary information, click Generate Output. Diffit will produce an adaptive reading passage, a summary, key vocabulary words, multiple-choice and short-answer questions, and open-ended prompts. All of the generated content can be edited or added to. Use the dropdown box to adjust the reading level or language. Share the materials with students by copying them into a document, printing, or exporting them to Google Docs/Forms.
In the Classroom
Use Diffit to quickly adapt and differentiate text or content by reading level and language needs. Use Diffit to translate text into the native language of multilingual learners and generate comprehension questions. Differentiate text for special needs students or gifted students based on their ability. Engage students in the learning process by copying the questions generated by Diffit into an interactive quiz format resource such as Blooket, reviewed here. Extend learning by asking students to respond to the open-ended questions by sharing a video response using Flip, reviewed here. Check out TeachersFirst Blog Basics for the Classroom for additional information on creating a blog for your classroom. Use this information as a starting point for creating blogs for students. Replace written reports or oral presentations by requiring students to create blog posts sharing information learned in class. Use a tool like Edublog, reviewed here. Edublog offers tools for creating class and individual blogs, but not for embedding videos or HTML links. UseTelegra.ph, reviewed here, for older students. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. OneNote is a multifaceted note-taking and organizational tool that is built into Microsoft Teams that can be used to enhance lessons and activities. OneNote Class Notebooks include a personal workspace for every student, a content library for handouts, and a collaboration space for lessons and creative activities. Join us and learn how to get started using this digital notebook powerhouse to support effective classroom instruction. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Learn the basic components and uses of a OneNote Class Notebook; 2. Explore ways to use OneNote Class Notebooks to support instruction; and 3.
