Google Maps is a familiar tool for finding directions, but it has so much more potential for dynamic learning in the classroom. Google My Maps allows educators to create customized, interactive maps to engage students with location-based projects across subjects and grades. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of building customized maps and explore examples of how other teachers have used My Maps to enhance instruction, collaboration, and student projects. Learn strategies for using My Maps to allow students to guide their own explorations, tell location-based stories, visualize data, and demonstrate their learning. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Build a customized My Maps demo map incorporating markers, shapes, and multimedia elements. 2. Explore examples of My Maps projects and reflect on potential connections to their own instruction. 3. Plan for their own instructional My Maps project to try with students. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

The British Are Coming! is part of the TeachersFirst Help! I Lost My Library/Media Specialist series reviewed here. Following a short introduction and background knowledge, this article shares picture and chapter book ideas and suggested activities that provide information and context relating to events surrounding the American Revolution. In addition, several suggestions are included that share links to virtual field trips that also enhance students' understanding of the revolution. Information includes correlation to ISTE and AASL standards.

If you use Dropbox or Box to collect student work, don't miss this site! Use this tool to move files out of Dropbox or Box and into a different or private folder for grading. This is especially useful if you have a "Turn In" folder where students place completed assignments. Use to sort pictures or videos easily and make the organization of Dropbox easy and automatic. Login easily with your Dropbox account. Create "rules" in this tool that are automatically used in your Dropbox account to move your files around to folders you designate. Files and folders are checked against these rules frequently to keep your Dropbox or Box account neat and tidy.

Use to manage pictures or videos taken in the classroom and uploaded to Dropbox. If you are using Dropbox in your class, set up this site at the beginning of the year to save you time! Create a rule that moves them all into the same folder (or folders) for easy organization and location of files later. Merlot (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) is a curated collection of free learning and support materials for educators that includes almost 100,000 learning resources in all content areas and grade levels. Search information on the site in several ways, such as using a keyword or searching by ISBN, materials, or members. Use the dropdown box labeled "Browse" at the top of the page to conduct a more focused search by grade level, content, type of material, and mobile platform. All available content includes clickable peer reviews and user ratings with an overview of the material, recommended uses, and target student population. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to bookmark and save topics. In addition, registration offers access to Merlot's Content Builder (website maker) and a Course ePortfolio.

Bookmark and save Merlot to use for professional development and planning purposes. Create an account to save and access bookmarks at any time throughout the year. Due to the size of this site, consider including it as part of your professional development activities with grade-level or department peers to explore by sections. When did slavery actually end in the United States? Learn about the story of Union General Gordon Granger and his march of troops into Galveston, Texas, on June 19th, as he announced that all enslaved people were free by completing this interactive lesson and video presentation. In addition to the animated video, this lesson includes multiple and short response questions, additional resources to dig deeper, and further discussion questions. Create a free account with Ted-Ed to save and customize this lesson. The video is hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then it may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Share this lesson with students to complete at school or as a flipped learning lesson. On their own or with a partner, have students answer the multiple-choice and open-answer questions by clicking on "Think." Then, consider having small student groups read the additional information inside the Dig Deeper section and investigate the links with the information. Following that, have groups share the information with other class members. For a mini project like this, consider using the tools available at Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here for students to create presentations, infographics, and other visual media. Another project suggestion would be to have small groups of students investigate the story of Juneteenth further through different perspectives, such as that of a soldier, Texas citizens, or children. Remove and replace the background from images quickly and without registration using Strip Background. Click start, then drag and drop or upload an image from your device. Once processed, download the new image or use the features available to add a new background color, image, or effect. Choose new backgrounds by uploading an image, or select an image from the site's gallery or Pixabay. When editing is complete, choose "file" and then save it as a JPG, PNG, or WebP. In the Classroom
Before asking students to use Strip Background, demonstrate how to create and save images. Consider recording a tutorial using Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, then sharing a link on student and classroom devices. Discussing copyright and fair use best practices is always an excellent idea when editing images. Use Strip Background to enhance students' presentations and stories. For example, remove the background from a student's picture and then add a background with them in a location or setting that is part of their project. Choose a background image of a city being studied, a different time, or a far-away setting like the moon, then place your student image on top. Resize the image to fit the scene. Include this image as a starter for class projects. Use images on top of book covers for book talks, create images for story characters and heroes, or use them for weather reports. The ideas for using this tool are only limited by your imagination and that of your students. Scroll down the landing page to find the National Freedom Day download for high school-age students with directions for a student-planned learning fair created for use with both in-person and online learning. Plans for middle school include a persuasive writing activity, research writing, and creative writing projects. Ideas for elementary students ask them to brainstorm ideas and then create an informative bulletin board.

Include the teaching ideas and activities provided on this site with your other lessons on Juneteenth, Emancipation, or slavery. Engage students in learning about Juneteenth by sharing a timeline of events leading up to Emancipation and beyond, including the recognition of Juneteenth nationally. Create your timeline using the timeline creator Wikipedia Timeline Generator, reviewed here, provided by Class tools. Extend learning by asking students to share their understanding of Juneteenth using a presentation tool such as Genially, reviewed here, to create interactive images and presentations. Once you are signed in, members can search Genially's Inspiration area to find a reproducible template for a Juneteenth interactive image.

Use this historical fiction book to help students to learn about the Great Depression in a small town in Illinois. Use our robust Instructional Guide with students in grades 4-8. Consider using the historical information and primary sources from the book to have students create timelines of the important events during the Great Depression. As digital media increasingly replaces traditional media, students must have the skills to think critically about these new types of texts. Media literacy - the ability to skillfully read and write in a wide range of message forms - allows students to identify themes and issues emerging from popular culture and has related standards that have been incorporated across content areas and grade levels nationwide. Join us to learn more about this information age survival skill. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand the importance of teaching media literacy in the classroom; 2. Explore media literacy resources; and 3. Learn to use the five key questions of media literacy when planning lessons. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

This Reading Trek provides inspiration and suggestions for using the trade book Harriet the Spy. Harriet Welsch is an 11-year-old girl living in New York's Upper East Side. One day she starts writing her observations about everyone she knows in a notebook. Then someone finds her notebook and exposes its content, which is very critical. Use our robust Instructional Guide with students in grades 4-7. Content correlates to Common Core Standards, ISTE Student Standards, National Core Arts Standards for Visual Arts, and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies.
